STANDARDS, OBJECTIVE AND ASSESSMENT

Standards

8.F.A.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly
one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input
and the corresponding output.1

8.F.A.2 Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different

way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions).

8.F.B.4 Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two

quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a
description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from
a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear
function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of
values.

8.F.B.5 Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two

quantities by analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or
decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features
of a function that has been described verbally.

Central Focus To understand that patterns and relationships can be

represented graphically, numerically, symbolically or verbally.

Learning Objective(s)/Learning Target(s) Given a worksheet, students will

be able to solve 5/6 problems correctly with 80% accuracy.
Knowledge of Students to Inform Instruction My higher level students will
have an understanding of the patterns involved in a function independently in order
to move on to word problems, where my lower level students will have an
understanding of the vocabulary involved in Math and with extra guided practice,
they will be able to solve the problems on the worksheet provided.

Assessment Plan Given a worksheet with function tables, students will be

randomly selected to recite a rule for the selected function table.

IMPLEMENTATION

Rationale Based on early learning that we have all experienced, students can
relate to the Google Slides presentation that Teacher created. Real-life situations
will be explained for added visualization.

Academic Language Function Tables, Pattern, Substitution, Input, Output

Instructional Materials Smartboard, Google Slides Presentation, Worksheets,

Pencils

Procedure Teacher will start presentation on Google Slides. Teacher will explain
that students have been working with patterns since they were very small children,
first, patterns with shapes, then gradually, patterns with numbers. Now, it is time to
organize what they know about patterns onto a function table. Teacher will discuss
that different function tables have different rules. Sometimes the rule is given, and
you are asked to fill in the missing information on the function table using that rule.
Teacher will do an example with students on the board. Students will then be asked
to give a thumbs up/thumbs down for understanding. The ones with thumbs up will
receive the worksheets, the ones with thumbs down will be grouped together for
further guided practice with worksheet.

Evidence-Based Reflection Students will be asked to write a rule and its

correlated sentence in order to see if extra practice is needed in Academic Success.
