TheBadgerbisphenolA(BPA)technologyproducesahighpurityBPAproductfromphenolandacetone
thatissuitableforpolycarbonateandepoxyresinapplications.Theprocessusesionexchangeresincatalyst,
andfeaturesproprietarypurificationtechnology.About1.2milliontonsofcapacityhasbeenlicensedacross
theglobe.

IntheBPAcondensationreactors,phenolandacetonereactoveranionexchangeresincatalystinthe
presenceofahomogeneouspromoterandexcessphenol,toproducebisphenolA,waterandvarious
byproducts.Thecatalystsystemhasalongcatalystlife.

Thewaterofreactionandthesmallamountofunreactedacetoneareremovedfromthereactoreffluentby
distillation.Acetoneisrecycledtothereactorsystem.Noacetonepurgeisrequiredwiththisprocess.The
reactionwaterissenttothewasterecoverysystem,fromwhichwastewatersuitableforbiotreatmentand
phenolsuitableforrecycletothereactionsystemareproduced.Thedehydrationeffluentisconcentratedtoa
BPAlevelsuitableforcrystallization.

BPAisseparatedfrombyproductsinaproprietarysolventcrystallizationandrecoverysystemtoproducethe
adductofp,pBPAandphenol.Motherliquorfromthepurificationsystemisdistilledinthesolventrecovery
sectiontorecoverdissolvedsolvent.Thesolventfreemotherliquorstreamisrecycledtothereactionsystem.
Apurgefromthemotherliquorissenttothewasterecoverysystem.

Singletraindesignsaslargeas200ktaorassmallas60ktaareavailable.

ThepurifiedadductisprocessedinaBPAfinishingsystemtoremovephenolfromtheproduct,andthe
resultingmoltenBPAissolidifiedintheprilltowertoproduceprillssuitableforthemerchantBPAmarket,
includingpolycarbonateproduction.
