Major Assignment 3 Proposal

For the Major Assignment 3, I am planning on writing my paper

on how the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 contributed to the

developing identity of the American nation. Because this policy

changed the demographic makeup of the United States, I want to talk

about how this truly affects American identity. As I have said in my past

two major assignments, I believe that American identity is made up of

diversity, and this act brought that. New immigrants entered the

United States under this act and brought many ideas to the country,

overall affecting how I live.

Reshape the United States." Migrationpolicy.org. N.p., 02 Mar. 2017.

The article Fifty Years On, the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act

Continues to Reshape the United States overall explains the historic

significance of the Immigration and Nationality Act. My paper is written

on how American identity is defined by diversity, and this article helps

support that. It argues how the law dramatically changed the racial

and ethnic makeup of our country. This article was posted onto the

Migration Policy Institute. As a result, this source has great authority to

talk on immigration. Also, immigrants wrote this article, so they can

really relate to the topic of this article. I strongly agree with this article,

due to the fact that it explains how the Immigration and Nationality Act

changed the United States. One specific thing I learned from this

source was that in 1965 whites made up 84 percent of the U.S.

population, while Hispanics comprised for 4 percent and Asians for less

than 1 percent. 50 years later, white made up at 62 percent of the U.S.

population Hispanics made up 16 percent, and Asians made up 6

percent. As a result, I think this will be highly significant for my project

because statistics help to get a point across and will make my

argument stronger. I can connect this source to past articles I have

read in this class about American identity. I have learned that America

is known as a melting pot, because there are so many different

cultures. Knowing that and reading this article better helps me

understand why.
