90s. Since then Im observing the developments in Windows and lately in 2012 I started a

What is Windows 10?
Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system developed by Microsoft as part of
the Windows NT family of operating systems. Unveiled on September 30, 2014 as a
successor to Windows 8.1, it is scheduled to be released in 2015, and is currently in public
beta testing.

Microsoft left the Windows 8 sequel Windows 9 and opted for a better name. Its
called Windows 10. It is a unified OS and applicable to many devices.




What can it do?
Windows 10 will be compatible with all the familiar management systems, including
mobile device management. MDM tools will manage not just mobile devices, but PCs,
phones, tablets, and even embedded devices in-part of the Internet of Things, Myerson
said. Enterprise customers will be able to manage their own app stores, so that their
employees get the right apps for them. As Windows 8 did, data security will be a priority,
he said.

Windows 10 will be our greatest enterprise platform ever, Myerson said.

Windows 10 will see the spread of Cortana, Microsofts Siri and Google Now competitor,
into all versions of the new OS, including desktops, laptops and tablets. WinBeta recently
posted an overview of a leaked version of Cortana on Windows 10, voice and all.

Features
1) Start Menu Returns
Its what Windows 8 detractors have been clamoring for, and Microsoft has finally brought
back the Start Menu. Now, when you click on the Start button at the bottom left of the
screen, you get two panels side by side, with the left column showing pinned, recently and
most-used apps.
You also get a power button at the top for options such as Hibernate, Standby and
Shutdown, and an all apps option a la Windows 7. The right column features a selection of
live tiles that you can customize, resize and reorganize.
2) Universal Search in Start menu
The Search tool at the bottom of the Start menu now not only searches your programs and
files (as it does on Windows 7), but also looks up related results on the Internet.
Presumably powered by Microsofts web search engine Bing, this means you wont have
to open up a browser to find a particular Wikipedia entry. Its not entirely clear yet what
other sources this Universal Search will pull from.
3) Multiple Desktops
Think of it as having a different monitor on which you run another set of windows, but
without the physical monitor. The Multiple Desktops feature is similar to Apples Spaces
feature on OS X, and helps you manage your multitude of open windows and apps.
Now, instead of having multiple windows open on top of each other on one desktop, you
can set up a whole other virtual desktop for those programs to reside in. Set up one
specifically for home and leave your apps such as Netflix and Amazon open, and create
another desktop for work on which you keep Word, Excel and Internet Explorer open.
4) Task View Multitasking
With the new desktops comes a new way to keep track of your open apps on Windows 10.
On the new operating system, you can either hit the new Task View button on the task bar
or swipe in from the left edge of the screen to pull up a one-page view of all your open
apps and files. Its not much different from using the Alt-Tab combination shortcut on
your keyboard, but this presents a convenient way for touch-oriented users to get an
overview of whats running.
5) Improved Start Screen
The new Start screen, which is the touch-optimized page for all the live tiles and apps
Windows 8 has come to be known for, now comes with a persistent taskbar and a list of
programs and folders on the left. This lets you get easy access to locations such as My
Documents or PC Settings directly from the home screen and makes it easy to find a
specific app, thanks to the All Apps option at the bottom.
6) Quadrant-style Split Screen Multitasking
Microsofts Snap View multitasking feature has been improved to now let you dock
windows to the four corners of your screen. While you could split your display between
up to four apps at a go before, the number of apps you could have side-by-side was limited
by your devices screen resolution.
Its not clear yet whether this quadrant snap view is dependent on your resolution, but this
new way of docking will make for far more efficient multitasking. The system will even
suggest what other open apps you can use to fill up available space.
We expect more features to be announced as Microsoft gets closer to publicly releasing
Windows 10, so stay tuned for more info.
7) The Command Prompt Got Way More Than Just Ctrl-V
Microsoft made an unusual point of specifying that Ctrl-V would work inside the
command prompt. As Whitson discovered in our walkthrough, however, theres a lot
more. Right-click on the title bar of a command prompt window, select Properties, and
click the Experimental tab and there are several other new features you can enable.
8) Notifications Are Getting a Makeover
Notifications in Windows have never really been all that unified. Part of this is because
developers make their own notification systems (looking at you, Google) but
notifications have also usually been limited to small bubbles appearing in the bottom-
right corner of the screen. In Windows 10, you might notice a few more of them getting
prominent placement.
9) You Can Finally Pin the Recycle Bin to the Start Menu and Taskbar
For uncomfortably unclear reasons, pinning the Recycle Bin to the taskbar has always
been needlessly complicated. In Windows 10, the option is now available with a simple
right-click. Open up an Explorer window and, under Favorites, click Desktop. Right-click
the icon that says Recycle Bin and you now have the option to Pin to Start.
10) Cortana Is (Probably) Coming to the Desktop
When you consider Windows alongside mobile operating systems, its antiquity becomes
more apparent. Android and iOS, for example, can both accept a wide variety of voice
commands and do many functions directly from search. Microsoft has been working on a
voice assistant called Cortana thats allegedly supposed to appear in Windows 10 before
its released.
11) You Can Give Targeted Feedback Directly to Microsoft
This one isnt so much a secret feature of Windows 10 as much as the primary reason you
might want to try out the preview. Microsoft has created a feedback app specifically for
users of this Technical Preview. While using the OS, Windows will occasionally ask you
for feedback for certain features, but you can also leave your own.
12) The Windows 10 Start menu is resizable
This one is a bit odd: You can make the Windows 10 Start menu as tall or as wide as you
like. If you want to have a Start menu that takes up the entire left side of your screen, or a
narrow strip across the taskbar, then thats now possible. The taskbar itself is also
resizable, which means you can do weird stuff.
13) Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts for virtual desktops, improved snapping,
task view
One of Windows 10s bigger new features is virtual desktops additional instances of the
Desktop that you can use to better organize your workspace. Theres also improved
snapping, and a new view called Task View thats kind of like Alt-Tab, but it incorporates
your virtual desktops as well. All of these new features have associated keyboard shortcuts
to make using them a cinch.
14) Continuum
Microsoft talked about many features for Windows 10 before we actually knew what
Windows 10 was, like Desktop Windows Store apps and the Start Menu. What it didnt
talk about in great detail was its plans for bridging gap between the tablet friendly
Windows Start Screen with the more mouse and keyboard friendly Start Menu. This link
is called Continuum and its not yet available in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, so we
have not been able to use it for ourselves.
15) MKV
Windows has always picked up new media capabilities when they became relevant. In the
mid-2000s many people used a home theater PC running Windows Media Center to get
digital media in their living room. Windows Media Player has existed for years and picked
up CD playback and even its own third-party music stores in previous versions of
Windows.
16) Search / Cortana
The Windows 8.1 update added integrated Bing Search to Windows for the first time.
Some liked it, some still dont know that theres a Search button built into Windows.
Windows 10 makes built-in search clearer. Forget that hidden Search Charm in Windows
8, the Task Bar and Start Menu both include search buttons. Documents and web results
are cleanly integrated. Microsoft has hinted at and leaks have pointed to Cortana,
Microsofts voice and text-powered assistant from Windows Phone making a dbut in
Windows 10.
17) Predictive Text Keyboard
Smartphones have had predictive text for years, but today it remains a missing feature
from Windows 8. Predictive text allows users to type a few letters of a word and then
select from a list of words.
18) Store Apps and Desktop apps
When you download an app from the Windows Store today, its only available in the Start
Screen. What that means is every app covers your entire screen, doesnt allow you to
multitask in the Desktop and cant be resized unless you have a screen with a high enough
resolution.
19) Notification Center
Live Tiles were intended to be the perfect mix between beauty and information. Almost
uniform, Microsoft originally designed for the Windows Phone as a way to quickly and
easily disseminate information and act as a short cut. They work beautifully for that.
20) Task View
Task view is an easy and simple way of looking at all the apps you have open in the
Desktop. In short, Microsoft is borrowing a terrific feature from Apples Mac OS X
software for iMacs and MacBooks.
21) Snap Assist
Grabbing a window with your mouse and dragging it to the side of your screen has always
been useful. Its great for multitasking. Windows 10 makes auto suggestions when you
start snapping things. You can quickly divide your display into halves or even quarters.
22) Single Store
Apps running in one single place are great. Being able to run apps across multiple devices
is the dream. Apple appeared to be toying with this idea when it opened the Mac App
Store some time ago, however its Microsoft thats come the closest to actually delivering
on it. Today, Windows Store apps run on Desktops, laptops, tablets and unlock companion
apps on Windows Phone.
23) Virtual Desktops
A lot of people like to open tons of apps. They are then left to sort between those different
apps depending on whether its for work or personal. Keeping track of them can be a
nightmare.
Microsoft will let users artificially added different Desktops. Desktop apps can be sorted
then and organized based on task. Doing some Black Friday shopping? Great, leave that in
a window your boss cant see. You can switch between them with the flick of a button.

Windows 10 Pricing
As new Windows 10 pricing information drops, we take a look at what Microsoft has in
store for its OS users

Microsoft announces details of a 21 January 2015 event, where its promising to
reveal further details about Windows 10. Could this be the Consumer Preview
launch?
Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner has hinted that the firm will charge
for the Windows 10 OS.
Release date of Windows 10 expected to be sometime late 2015
Windows Insider Program launched on 1 October 2014 for early adopters to access
latest preview builds
Technical Preview will end 15 April 2015
Consumer preview set for release in early 2015, and will showcase previously unseen
features
Partner-only Windows 10 build leaked onto file sharing sites, revealing further details
about next-gen OS.
Windows 10: UK release date
Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 will launch later in the year in 2015, so we wont
get the April release we were hoping for. But it has also said that it will share more about
universal apps at its annual Build conference next April. The Technical Preview license
runs until April 15 2015, so expect a more complete beta then. We may see one bigger
beta release and then a Q4 2015 launch in time for the Christmas rush in PC, laptop, tablet
and smartphone sales.
Whats in for Security?
Running the worlds most ubiquitous OS, Microsoft has always taken security quite
seriously, often releasing patches daily to its various versions of Windows. Now, the
company looks to take its security measures for Windows 10, with two-factor
authentication (2FA) coming standard on enterprise versions of the OS.
The Latest?
The Windows 10 leak from Thurrott details a new OS build #9901, to be exact that
debuts Cortana with a search box on the task bar. This more than likely allows users to
search their PC or the web (through Bing) via typing or their voice.
Conclusion
Windows is about to get a big upgrade. From a resurrected Start Menu to new multitasking
tools, the latest Microsoft operating system is designed to remedy the frustrations caused
by the confusing Windows 8. Heres the best of what you can look forward to in Windows
10 when it comes to market in mid-2015.

Microsoft COO Turner went on to say that Microsoft is in the process of finding new
ways to monetize the lifetime of [the] customer and should have a business model in
place by early 2015. Following the release of Office 365, its clear that Microsoft has an
interest in subscription-based pricing, but the question is if Microsoft is ready for such a
drastic transition.
