Passage 1
Bees, classified into over 10,000 species, are insects found in almost every
part of the world except the northernmost and southern- most regions.
One commonly known species is the honeybee, the only bee that produces
honey and wax. Humans use the wax in making candles, lipsticks, and
3
other products, and they use the honey as a food. While gathering the
nectar and pollen with which they make honey, bees are simultaneously
helping to fertilize the flowers on which they land. Many fruits and
vegetables would not survive if bees did not carry the pollen from blossom
to blossom.
All workers, like the queen, are female, but the workers are smaller than
the queen. The male honeybees are called drones; they do no work and
cannot sting. They are devel- oped from unfertilized eggs, and their only
job is to impregnate a queen. The queen must be fertilized in order to lay
worker eggs. During the season when less honey is available and the
drone is of no further use,the workers block the drones from eating the
honey so that they will starve to death.

desideratum in many Muslim countries and without which it is impossible
to understand the purposes of the Qurn in the social and legal spheres.
This approach to an understanding of the Qurn should naturally end up
in a wider sociohistorical approach, which is the only adequate method to
understand the social values (rather than legal enactments) of the Qurn.
Indonesian translations of al-Ghazl and IbnKhaldn have been made
available and are read. Apparently the original gap between the
traditionalists (the Nahdat al-`Ulam) and the reformists (the
Muhammadiya) has been almost closed, and I myself have heard certain
prominent members of the former discussing not just the theoretical
possibility, but actual ijtihd solutions to certain social problems. I regard it
as likely that, given time, opportunity, and facilities, Indonesian Islam,
although currently and understandably heavily dependent on al-Azhar, will
develop a meningful indigenous Islamic tradition that will be genuinely
Islamic and creative. Although the present state of affairs obviously needs
much improvement, there are signs of hope for the future: the feverish
educational and intellectual activity, although recent, appears to be
heading in the right direction.
33. The occasions of revelation stated in line 4 (in the Ulm al-Qurn)

Passage 4
In 1807 Noah Webster began his greatest work, An American dictionary of the English
language. In preparing the manuscript, he devoted ten years to the study of English and its
relationship to other languages, and seven more years to the writing itself. Published in two
volumes in 1828, an American dictionary of the English language has become the recognized
authority for usage in the United States. Websters purpose in writing it was to demonstrate
that the American language was developing distinct meanings, pronunciations, and spellings
from those of British English. He is responsible for advancing simplified spelling forms:
develop instead of the British form develope; theater and center instead of theatre and centre:
color and honor instead of colour and honour

dominates Southeast Asia, was founded on the princples of Muhammad
ash-Shafii (d. 820), who held the Sunna to be the most important source of
law. The Maliki School, which is primarily observed in West Africa, was
founded by Malik ibnAnas (d. 795), who relied almost exclusively on the
traditions of Medina in forming his opinions. The Hanafi School of Abu
Hanifah (d. 767), which prevails across most of Central Asia and the Indian
subcontinent, is by far the largest and most diverse legal tradition with
regard to breadth of interpretation. And finally, the Hanbali School of
Ahmad ibnHanbal (d. 855), the most traditionalist of the legal schools, can
be found in pockets throughout the Middle East, but tends to dominate
ultraconservative countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. Added to
this group is the Shi`ite school of law founded by Ja`far as-Sadiq (d. 765),
which will be dealt with in the following chapter.
