1. Your research question. Remember, it needs to be narrow and specific. See the notes below.
-How our gender stereotypes about sexual behavior reinforced in popular TV shows?
-My first topic was on racial double standard in media because that topic was just running
through my mind when the teacher was explaining the prompt in class and I thought of
Chappelles show. This was my favorite show when I was growing up, but it was cancelled
because it was racist but funny. This related to my first topic, but then I went to the professor
office hours to discuss even more about my topic to narrow it down. I did more research on
double standard and I noticed that there so many topics that relate to double standard. The one
that I found interesting was on sexual/gender double standards on media (tv shows). I found this
interesting because I can relate to this as well not as the other topics related to double standard.
2. Summarize one important claim you have discovered in the ongoing conversation on this
- The gender role in our society sees men as more dominant than women. The mens role in
society is that they have to be the leader in their household making the decisions. They have to

be financially stable and provide anything their family wants while the women are working full
time in their homes taking care of their family. The media supplement the gender roles in society
in television, making this more noticeable. The article Not so Modern Family: Top sitcoms
make for sexist, inaccurate television by Michelle Haimoff stated that male characters are
professionally accomplished, while female characters are unemployed or struggling She talks
about how women in tv shows are mostly not employed, but if they do have a job they barely
have enough to pay their bills showing a sign of struggle. Male characters have a good paying
3. Summarize an opposing claim you have discovered in the ongoing conversation on this
- Some of the women can benefit from their gender role depending what social class they are in. In
society, they are seen as nurturing women. They dont have the pressure as men do in this
society. Men have to worry about getting bills paid while providing their family like anything
they need, protecting them from danger, making big decision etc A blog post Three cheers for
women who say they dont want to work. At least theyre honest. by Penelope Trunk states
Jennifer Lawrence said she is getting ready to stop doing movies so she can have kids. She said
shes much more interested in having a family than a career Most women prefer living the rest
of their life taking care of their family, but keep in mind that these women are in the upper class
- Well the opposing claim is mostly upper class women, but where the majority of the women that
aren't in the upper class like discussed in the blog. If you think about it, it's the same thing for
every woman no matter what social class you are in. The only difference on this is that the upper
class women have more stuff that supports for their family than the lower class, which puts more
5. Discuss your claim is in regards to this topic. What do you want to make your audience
aware of and/or convince them of? (this can also be thought of as your tentative thesis)
- I want my audience to know how media plays a big role in the gender roles of society. The media
makes it more obvious and offends the majority of women and men as well. This a problem that
needs to be stopped and reinforced a different way that challenges the roles in TV shows instead
of accepting the way the TV shows are doing it now. Media makes the gender roles seen in a
6. What might other people doubt about your claim and how you might respond to them?
- I feel like women and men would agree with my claim because it's obviously shown on TV
