Course title: How to write a food review on Openrice

Target students: 12~15 international students with intermediate or


advanced Chinese language level

Teaching objectives:
Help students get a basic understanding of how to write a food review,
including vocabulary and sentence patterns
Enable students to organize structure in writing and become conscious
of features of written style
Encourage students to read more materials outside class and be more
interested in writing in social interaction

Intended learning outcomes:


By the end of class, students are expected to:
Acquire the structure of introduction-body-ending in writing
-Write a food review independently, from the following dimensions:
location, dish style, taste, service and so on

Teaching content:

Vocabulary: locative words ()words

describing price ()words describing the service

Structure: introduction-body-ending

Teaching materials: Powerpoint, markers, paper, handouts of menu and


sample
Medium of instruction: Mandarin (as a dominant language)
Duration: 40 mins

Teaching procedures:
1. Topic lead-in: How to discover local restaurants?
Teacher asks students how do they find local cuisines in Hong Kong and
then introduce Openrice app to the whole class.

Let students imagine a situation: teacher has opened a new Cantonese-style


restaurant called Super Dimsum in Causeway Bay and now invite them to
write a food review for this restaurant on Openrice to attract dinners.

2. Introduction of main aspects in food review:


Group Discussion: 3-4 groups
Lead students to discuss the topic of what is food review or to recall what
kind of elements should an authentic food review be contained.

Oral report and summary: teacher asks students to present their opinions and
write down their answers on a piece of paper. Share the notes with other
group. Plus, the teacher will summarize the main aspects on whiteboard and
add other elements that students may not mention.
3. Can you write a short paragraph on one of the aspects

In-class task: Since students now understand the basic element of a food
review,
the teacher will ask each group to be responsible for one dimension (location,
dish style, taste, service and so on).
[Map, Menu and pictures will be given for reference]

When finished, every group will share with each other and the teacher will
give feedback.

4. How to write an authentic food review?


Model Analysis: the teacher presents a sample of food review on the screen
and lead students to analyze its structure, sentences and words carefully.
Encourage students to use diverse descriptive words and Summary-body
structure in their writing task.

5. After-class assignment: write a food review


Based on the information discussed in class and the sample structure,
students are assigned to write independently. Encourage students to go for
some delicious food and write on Openrice.

Assessment: class participation and homework assignment
