seaside sanctuary
On one deck, there is a perfectly-placed entertaining
area with a built-in lounge; on another, a dining zone
has been created. Frameless glass fencing along the
perimeter of both areas allows the beautiful view to be
appreciated at all times. The upper deck is a space for
relaxing and is outfitted with modern outdoor furniture.
The front garden was designed with more of a family
feel. This area was best suited for family use, as it
distances the children from the waters edge and keeps
them within view and earshot of everyone inside. Bright,
flowering plants decorate the front area making it a
stimulating and engaging environment for the children.
In one section, where an expanse of luxuriant dwarf
mondo grass is traversed by stepping-stone pavers,
the look is tropical. Elsewhere, the look is more coastal
and features a large rocky outcrop that was integrated
into the design, giving the space an organic feel. This
is complemented by tallowood timber decking and a
built-in bench-style garden seat.
Given its seaside location, the land levels change quite
dramatically throughout the steep site, which proved a
challenge for the projects builder, Adam Brennan. Adam
paid particular attention to managing the topography,
creating usable areas and making sure all spaces from
front to back and inside to outside read in a cohesive
way. One of the ways a seamless indoor-outdoor
connection was achieved on two of the decks was to use
York tiles for interior and exterior flooring.
The stunning contemporary residence is now the
perfect seaside sanctuary, thanks to its meticulously
landscaped outdoor spaces. Both home and garden
spaces have been designed and planted to match the
location, with the spaces on the water side of the house
oriented to capitalise on the breathtaking views. T

that intrigued David Franklin of
Franklin Landscape & Design. After
all, if you want to create the ultimate
outdoor entertaining arena and you
have the space, why not?
Of course, it has to be handled
intelligently. Its not just a matter of
ensuring the green is nice and level;
its important that it blends seamlessly with the overall
landscape, looking like a well integrated element.
In its broadest sense, the brief for this project was
to open up the backyard and create spaces that would
appeal to all ages and provide a variety of ways to enjoy
time outside. More specifically, explains David: We
wanted to have different levels with designated areas

For many, the putting green, expertly designed

others, it is the lounge area which features a U-shaped

a sense of flow and makes it easy to get around the
backyard. From the deck you can descend directly to the
putting green, the patio or the lounge area, says David.
For tall hedging around the perimeter of the garden,
David chose Ficus hilli, a small, fast-growing tree with
dense glossy-green foliage. Low box hedging borders the
garden beds and the raised planters in the deck. Adding a
tropical flourish, David chose Trachycarpus as the feature
plant for the deck planters. These palms have fan-like
leaves and grow on a hairy single trunk. Reinforcing the
tropical feel is a series of potted cycads, under-planted
with red-flowering plants.

colour of bamboo culms (stems).
Looking through the main entry gate, a Japanese rock
garden featuring carefully hand-selected rocks is visible, as is a
carved granite pagoda. Beyond this lies a yotsume bamboo
fence which was handcrafted by Moto in the traditional way
using Japanese twine and special knots.
Throughout the various garden areas you will find a
plethora of features, including antique doors, a granite water
bath, lanterns and an outdoor Japanese hot bath, all of which
are special in their own right but, in keeping with Japanese
tradition, work together as a seamless whole with no one
feature dominating another.
Similar care was devoted to the plant selection. Moto has
included plants traditionally featured in Japanese gardens
such as the weeping maple (included for its autumnal colours)
and the weeping cherry (prized for its spring blossoms). For
year-round greenery, there are flourishing stands of bamboo
supplied by Red Cloud Bamboo and for splashes of bright
seasonal colour, azaleas.
In the rear garden the existing spa pool was transformed
into a rotenburo (Japanese hot spring/outdoor bath). The
old tiles and capping were removed and replaced with multi-
coloured slate, as was the interior surface of the pool to give it
the appearance of a natural spring. This shallow body of water
is now a perfect spot in which to relax and view the garden.
Not only did the garden impress the owners. In Landscaping
Victorias 2012 Victorian Landscape Awards, Kihara
Landscapes won the award for the best Residential Landscape
Construction, in the $75,000$150,000 category. T

The challenge for Motoyoshi
(Moto) Kihara of Kihara
Landscapes was to design and
build a garden that would be perceived as truly Japanese yet
still complement the look of a contemporary Australian home.
The garden was to consist of three clearly defined areas
front, side and rear gardens and, while it was important that
all three areas be able to stand alone, they needed to be tied
together as if one large space.
Entry to the front garden is via Japanese-style sliding timber

BACKYARD & GARDEN DESIGN IDEAS | 35

DESIGNER GARDENS

When selecting the plants for the garden, Jamie opted for
a simple plant palette of trees with interesting shrubs and
groundcovers to discourage the growth of weeds. I always
research and implement a plant palette that is appropriate to
the specific site and its associated microclimates, says Jamie.
Plants include a copse of Japanese maples, which
overhangs the entry path at the front of the home and when
lit up at night creates a lovely feature. Star jasmine was chosen
for the underplanting. Lilly pilly hedges were employed as
screening in the entry garden while to disguise the risers of
the front garden steps, and soften their angularity, there are
rows of clipped Lonicera nitida.
In the rear garden, Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem
provides screening. Also in the rear garden, around the clean-
lined pool, you will spy the strong architectural form of Agave
attenuata, which works particularly well with the geometric
shapes used throughout the landscape.
Besides the underwater tanks, which collect the rainwater
that runs off the roof and tops up the water features and pool,
other sustainable features include the low-water-use buffalo
lawn and Anston sandblasted concrete pavers, which not only

dragons blood trees, Limonium perezii and Euphorbia rigida in a
gravel-mulched bed.
Fulfilling the owners desire to grow vegies, six raised garden
beds made from recycled red gum sleepers were installed in the
backyard. The area has always been a place where the owners
grew food, so some of the trees were retained, including lemon
and lime trees and espaliered quince and persimmon, which
provide a leafy screen from the tennis court. Apricot, orange and
fig trees were added, while the edges of the garden have been
planted out with herbs and vegetables that need room to spread. V

This area is a haven for the owners who are industrious

gardeners. Waste garden material is shredded and
composted here to create humus-rich soil. Multiple worm
farms and composting systems ensure that nothing goes
to waste that could be of value to the soil and plants, says
Lydia. The garden is heavily mulched and a drip-irrigation
system, utilising rainwater from three tanks, makes the
most of natural rainfall.
While the gardens were planted just over two years ago,
you could be forgiven for thinking they had been here
forever, which is testament to the skilled design and the
thought put into the selection of plants and materials.
On the weekend of September 28 and 29, 2013, the
garden will be open to the public, from 10am to 4pm each

is almost too long to peruse.
As show visitors wound their way along the gardens paths,
it wasnt only the designers flair for planting that was evident.
At the centre of the design was a brick- and timber-built,
thatch-roofed summerhouse. British thatching, which has a
long history stretching back as far as the Bronze Age, is very
different to what we typically see here and is what most people
associate with cottages in the English countryside.
Discreetly worked into the backdrop was the recreation of
a tumbled-down wall from an old country house. Entwined
by climbing plants, it looked as if it had been in place for a
century or two. Elsewhere in the garden there was a metal
garden seat with a natural rust finish. This finish referenced
that of the contemporary circular metal sculpture that rose
up from a luxuriant garden bed. T

central water body, a billabong. The lighting and outdoor
shower on the site were powered by solar panels making
it completely off grid, which was something never
achieved before at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Glenice was also impressed by the liberal and well
considered use of Australian plants. Tree ferns, bottle
trees, eucalyptus species and the stunning architectural
forms of grass trees were used to create a showcase for
the great diversity, textures and style of Australian native
plants, she says.
Another standout element was the studio design,
inspired by the shape of the waratah flower. Perched above
the billabong, the studio was built using a series of laser-cut
reclaimed timber panels and featured clear acrylic flooring.
The goal of this structure was to emphasise that there
should always be a close connection between home and
garden. A hand-crafted timber ladder, which rose out of
the billabong and led to a rock at the top of the gorge four
metres above the billabong, also drew admiring comments.
And the final word goes to Wes Fleming of Flemings
Nurseries who says: The team went to Chelsea with a very
ambitious vision to showcase Australia, our horticultural
industry and to educate the world on the possibilities of
sustainable landscape design. Phillip Johnsons garden
was absolutely stunning and obviously the judges thought

wont splinter, rot or crack; and it comes in
a range of colours and finishes. Knotwood
produces aluminium decking in seven timber-
grain colours, including Blackbutt and Western
Red Cedar, and a selection of powder-coated
colours. No repainting or re-staining is needed,
making it a low maintenance choice.
These interlocking decking boards work
well with modern architecture and are suited
to bushfire-prone areas as aluminium is
non-combustible. Aluminium decking is also
mildew resistant, so you dont need to use
special cleaners to prevent the build-up of
mould. It also stays cool in the summer, so you
wont burn yourself when you touch it during
the hottest part of the day.

If you love the uninterrupted, natural look of timber, you may be interested to know that
you can now construct a beautiful looking deck without having the screws visible.
The proven Camo - Hidden Deck Fastening System works by screwing through the side of the decking board
directly into the joist, by butting consecutive boards together you completely conceal the fasteners.
(Also works in Composite and PVC decking boards and hardwood substrates)
