the barrier
my weight has always been an issue. ive been a size 4, a size 18, and
everything in between. i knew i had to make a change to get out of
the vicious cycle. i had a friend who was having success with alli, but
i just couldnt get past the side effects i had heard about. i decided
to learn more.
the boost
once i learned that alli is the only weight loss pill approved by the fda,
i knew it was safe. and when i learned online that i could control side
effects by sticking to a low-fat diet and using the support that comes
with alli, i knew alli was doable. and side effects havent been an issue
for me at all. but the best part about alli? my efforts are finally paying
off. ive stayed on track, and lost the weight i wanted to.

Screening Rooms

and lush backyard
are perfect for
having a garden

done yet, Kim says

to the homes trim.
IN THE DETAILS
Some of the houses
in my neighborhood
have maybe one
Tudor accent, so its
hard to call them full-
fledged Tudors, says
Kim. This porch
gives my home much
more authenticity.
ILLUMINATING POINT
Lighting was put along
the homes original
roofline during
construction of
the porch. The switch-
operated lights bathe the
porchs ceiling; no other
lamps are needed.
PERFECT VIEW
The screening extends
to the ceiling to maximize
natural light and increase
the view to the wooded
lot behind the house. Its
almost panoramic, says
Kim. The view alone
would have been call
enough for change.
SOFT LANDING
Coal-black all-weather
wicker furniture with
indoor/outdoor cushions
matches the homes casual
cottage stylemaking it
an extension of the indoor
living space.
HOUSE PARTY
Kim thinks of the porch as an extra
sitting room, perfectly suited for hosting
the small groups of three to four that
she enjoys most.
JOINT ASSETS
The porchs location right off the kitchen makes
it easy to bring finger food outside, but Kim
doesnt need a group to enjoy the 10'16'
space. I use it every single night, she says.

Care
SCRUB SMART
Clean the screen with a
soft bristle brush with
an extension handle.
Apply diluted detergent
and scrub gently to
prevent stretching the
screen. Rinse.
SMALL-SCALE
REPAIR Small holes
can be sealed using
clear fingernail polish.
Begin by smoothing
the torn fibers into
place, then apply one
or more coats of polish
to each side of the
damaged area.
LARGE-SCALE
REPAIR Large holes or
tears are best handled
by replacing the entire
damaged section. Start
by removing molding
and the screen section,
and then staple a new
screen (cut to size) in
place. Pull the screen
tight evenly on each
side to avoid wrinkles.
Replace molding.

THE RIGHT CAMERA
For best results, use a
camera with a minimum of
8 megapixels. Use the largest
setting (usually called fine
or best) for images with
high enough resolution to
blow up to an 810 photo

LIGHTING If possible, take
photos in natural light. For
dramatic shots, use a high-
contrast background (a dark
or light sheet, for example)
behind your subject.
COMPOSITION A good rule
of thumb, especially when
photographing your child, is
to get down to his or her level,
instead of snapping a shot
from your standing height.
Dont be afraid to move your
subject from the middle of the

But for Jane Green, it was
black and white. When she
and her husband, Frank,
renovated the landscape of
their Cincinnati-area home,
they bypassed the showy and went for sub-
dued, eschewing bright blooms and vivid
colors for more muted tones. Its the right
effect for Franks meditation practice and

As Janes choices
illustrate, picking a
quiet color scheme
depends on the site.
1) The upper terrace
connects to the house,
which has a white
exterior. Dark fencing
would have been too
stark, so Jane repeated
the white.
2) The lower terrace,
near the center of the
backyard, would have
been too conspicuous in
white, so Jane used a
dark green.
3) Pastel blooms bolster

upper terrace without
the distraction of intense
hues.
4) Classical urns, a

formality of the lower

them blue again?
If you planted a hydrangea
with blueor pink
owers, it is one of the
bigleaf hydrangeas
(Hydrangea macrophylla),
which depend on soil pH
to determine those hues. A
low pH (around 5.25.5) is
an acid soil, and it brings

Q: My hydrangea is in a
moist spot, but the
leaves are wilting and turning
brown. Whats up?
Hydrangeas like moist, but not soggy
soil. Heavy clay soil can be a problem
as well. Move your hydrangea to a
better-drained location. Or improve
the clay soil by mixing in a generous
amount of compost and replant the
hydrangea in the same spot.

The new reblooming bigleaf types,
such as Endless Summer, do bloom
repeatedly all summer in the right
conditions. They need 4 hours or
more of direct sun, protection from
late-spring frost in Zones 45, and an
annual dose of fertilizer with
balanced numbers, such as 10-10-10.
Q: I pruned my lacecap
hydrangea last fall,
and there were no blooms
this summer. Was it because
of the pruning?
Lacecape, below, and mophead
hydrangeas are H. macrophylla,
which produce ower buds in fall.
Prune this type of hydrangea in July
so you dont cut off next years buds.

What types of
hydrangeas look
great in fall gardens?
Most hydrangeas hold onto their
owers until late fall, fading into
warm pink tones that segue into tan.
They typically have yellow or gold
fall foliage. But oakleaf hydrangea
(H. quercifolia), below, is known for
its rich burgundy leavesits a
showstopper in autumn landscapes.
Its creamy white owers dry to
pink-beige in late fall and persist

n Colorado, Southwestern style lives amiably with the
Rocky Mountains. So when Carol Parsons renovated
the landscape around her Spanish-style Denver house,
the design almost created itself. I wanted to do
something in keeping with local character, an improve-
ment for the neighborhood.
Carol started with aspens and a Ponderosa pine, native
trees with unmistakable Colorado character. Boulders in the
perennial-lled owerbeds reinforce the montane personality of
the garden. Blue varieties such as allium and salvia complement
turquoise-colored doors and blue patio decor, all of it working
together to cultivate that mountain/Southwest feel.
Carol enjoys it all from a patio that was added as part of the
project. I wanted a sanctuary, she says. Its a nice place to have
friends over, gather, and relax from the work of the day.
CLIMBING THE WALLS Fairy roses and coral honeysuckle, above and left, stand
out against a stucco wall, improving the vista from Carols patio, above. I
thought roses were way beyond anything I could do, says Carol. But when I
transplanted these from a friends garden, I was amazed at what they did.

THE SCENT:
NICE ON YOUR NOSE
The average sun product doesnt smell
very good because of all the active
ingredients it contains. And the higher the
SPF, the worse it may smell. So many
manufacturers add perfumes to mask the
smell of those raw ingredients. But if
youre sensitive to scent you should know
that just because a sunscreen is labeled as
unscented doesnt mean its made without
perfumes, explains Boston dermatologist
Jeffrey Dover. For that, youll want a
fragrance-free formula.

THE TOUCH:
THAT SMOOTH FEELING
If you dislike the tacky feel of sunscreen,
youll be pleased to know there are less
cloying options available. Creams and
lotions are the most moisturizing, but gels,
sprays, and foams are less greasy, says Dr.
Heidi Jacobe, a member of the Skin Care
Foundations photobiology committee.
Look for an oil-free or gel formula. Keep in
mind that gels are alcohol-based, so youll
want to keep them away from the eyes
