Ispresentdayglobalwarminganomalous?Doesevolutionfollowagradualorsporadicpace?
Aremassextinctionsduetoextraterrestrialorterrestrialcauses?Aretheyrandomordothey
occurincycles?Theseareafewofthecontroversialissuesinhistoricalgeologytoday.Students
oftenbelievethatthereisonecorrect,testablesolutionforeveryproblem,adepersonalized
formulaforscientifictruth.

Butcontroversyisthelifebloodofscienceandscientistsvigorouslydisputethe"facts"as
presentedbycolleaguesontheoppositesideofanissue.Polarizationofsomeissuesrendersit
difficulttoseetheproponentsastrained,dispassionatescientists.Howissciencereallydone
andhowisscientificprogressmade?Whyarecertainissuesinvogueandothersnot?Arethere
differentshadingstoscientifictruth?

Thiscoursebeginswithanexaminationoftheprinciplesofscienceandtheidealmodelof
multipleworkinghypotheses.Thereafter,aseriesofcasestudieswillbereviewedusing
contradictoryjournalarticlesselectedfromawidespectrumoftopicsinhistoricalgeology.
Topicscoveredwillincludethoselistedabove,aswellasothers,like"continentaldrift,"which
arenowjudgedbymajorityopiniontobesettledissues.Historicalgeologyoffersagood
vantagepointforgeneralinsightonscientificmethod,bothintheoryandinpractice,because
thedisciplinedrawsonthemethodologyofallothersciences.Eachweekwewilltrytolookat
allsidesofanissue,notnecessarilytoteaseoutthetruth,butinordertoseewhatscientists
areallabout.

Athenianstothe20thCentury.Withattentionontheageoftheearth;ontheevolutionand
disappearanceofspecies;ontheoriginofoceans,continentsandmountains;onclimate
change;andonthecourageofscientistsinconfrontingthereligiousandpoliticalviewsoftheir
