You have been asked to help with a programme of staff training and development about
health and safety. The aims of the training programme are to:
Task 1
Produce an illustrated poster, which could be used in a staffroom to inform workers about
key areas of health and safety. Your poster should:
Outline four tips on how staff could reduce risk to their health while at work. i.e. take
a break every 4 hours.
Identify the people responsible for health and safety at Nescot College
BusVOC_T3Unit 14_Final Assignment_ 06/10/2015
Outline three responsibilities of the employer for health and safety
(1.1,1.2)
Complete the table below, which is designed to help staff improve their knowledge and
understanding about hazards and risks.
Give four examples of hazards What are the risks from these hazards?
around Nescot College (images
need to be used to illustrate the
hazards).
1. Damaged power plug Could get someone electrocute or start a fire.
The risk assessment is very important to find any risks or danger could be harmful
and try to avoid, fix it or inform people about it. We should know who is in danger
and if its controllable and if not we should work on it. Make people aware of the risk
and try to avoid injuries and any harm could reach anyone. Control and hazards
measures should be one of the priorities.
Choose three hazards and explain what you will do to prevent accidents from
happening.
1.
Hazard: slippery floor
Control: make sure that the cleaners will put signs where people will surly see it.
2.
Hazard: Unclean cafeteria
Control: there should be a daily check ups on the cafeteria to make sure they are
serving clean food.
3
Hazard: Smoking
Control: there should be put a strict and firm punishment for it.
Evaluate which hazards pose the highest risk to yourselves and others. Explain your
answer fully.
The unclean cafeteria, because not only one person who will get sick, its all those
who bought from it. Its not like the slippery floor or the smoking, its more than that
because people could get very sick and cannot work or concentrate for days, it even
may get them to the hospital with a series case. Its a series issue that should be
checked carefully every day.
Task 3
Dear Ms. De
I'm sending this letter to inform you that I'm looking for health and safety in college.
I've seen some of hazards around the college and here are some of them. Damaged
power plugs they are very dangerous to the girls and it even may start a fire so it
BusVOC_T3Unit 14_Final Assignment_ 06/10/2015
should be fixed or covered till someone fix it so it wont ham anyone, slippery floors
should warned about by putting signs where it clearly can be seen, the cafeteria
should be carefully checked every day to make sure that the people are eating
clean and healthy food as they are expecting, smoking should have a very strict and
firm punishment to make sure no one will smoke and harm other people. girls
around the college should be informed about health and safety rules so it should be
put on the walls so everyone could see and know it, get a proper training about it
and follow it witch it is important as an employability experience. I hope that the
information could get any use for the health and safety in college.
Task 4
Write an instruction sheet, which could be used as part of a training manual about health
and safety for staff. Your instruction sheet should:
Outline two reasons why it is important to rectify health and safety risks
Explain why is it important that staff do not endanger the health and safety of
themselves and others.
Outline the importance of safe moving and handling procedures for people or
objects. Give two examples of the effects on health if safe procedures are not
followed.
Explain what you will do in an emergency situation for example what is the college
procedures if a fire broke out? If you were the first person to witness the fire what
would you do first, what would you do next and then finally who would you need to
contact
Identify the job titles of individuals who might deal with accidents or sudden illness in
the college
So therell always be safety procedures. Theyre not really ridiculous, but not having them would be. No matter
what job you work in, it pays to be alert when it comes to health and safety. Some jobs are obviously more
dangerous than others, but accidents can happen in any type of workplace. The best policy is always to
prevent an accident occurring in the first place rather than trying to deal with the consequences afterwards.
When you've prioritized the hazards on your list, you need to start immediately on the most
important step of all fixing the problems in consultation with your workers. Your first aim
should be to totally remove the risk. For example, if the risk involves a hazardous chemical,
try to find a safe alternative to the chemical. If there is a slipping or tripping hazard in your
workplace, see if it can be removed.
Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety and try not to put anyone in
danger by endanger the health and safety of themselves and others. Make sure your own
Employers are required to take reasonable steps to safeguard the health and safety of all
employees, one of which is increasing awareness about the hazards, and what can be done
to minimize risk to avoid back injury which is the main reason for absence from the
workplace and avoiding getting someone harmed if what you are carrying fall and got
broken. Lifting even small loads (stacks of files, computer paper, a computer monitor, etc.)
can lead to injury if done improperly. Your back, neck and shoulders are all susceptible to
this type of injury. Before you decide to lift anything, be sure it is not too heavy for you (if it
is, ask a co-worker or supervisor to help). All you need to know to do this safely by training,
risk assessments, equipment and appropriate lifting techniques.
Task 5
Prepare a short presentation that could be used as part of a staff training session about
environmental and resource efficiency. Your presentation should:
Look around the college evaluate whether the staff waste resources (use images of
any waste and post it in your presentation). Why is this good/bad for business?
Suggest improvements for better health and safety awareness around the college
and environmental procedures.
