Medium-speed engines burning residual fuel need very specialised

requiring special types of detergency to avoid sludges. The
combustion of high sulphur fuels produces sulphur acids, which
cause high wear rates of piston rings and cylinder liners unless
neutralised by a high basicity reserve in the oil. The oil is in service
for very long periods, so centrifugal separators are used to remove
water and combustion contaminants from the oil.

A substance used in making greases which is mixed with base oil to
produce a stable semi-solid product. High Viscosity Index (HVI) oils have VIs in the range of 85
to 110, and have the best viscosity temperature coefficients
Total Acid Number (TAN)

TAN can give an indication of the deterioration of an oil in service W
due to oxidation. When used in the SAE system for classifying oils, an indication
that the oil is suitable for winter use.

Toxicity Water Separability
The capacity of a substance to harm living organisms. The ability of a lubricating oil to shed any water with which it
has become intimately mixed.

Universal Farm Oil
A lubricant for agricultural tractors and farm machinery which is
able simultaneously to carry out the functions of an engine oil,
transmission oil and hydraulic oil.
