Students Lose Senior Privileges Due to Unverified Absences

The latest controversy at La
Jolla High seems to be the vast
increase in seniors who have lost
their senior privileges. Many of
this years seniors have had their
privileges revoked because of ex-
cessive unverified absences and
truancies. Senior privileges in-
clude prom, walking at gradua-
tion, senior breakfast, and the se-
nior yearbook signing. This has
happened in the past, but never
on this large of a scale.
Counselors say that these
privileges are intended for peo-
ple who come to school every-
day, and people who dont come
to school shouldnt get the same
rewards. Everyone who has had

Largest Non-Nuclear Bomb Dropped on Afghanistan

On Thursday, April 13th, the
largest non-nuclear bomb named
the Mother Of All Bombs, or
Massive Ordinance Air Blast,
was dropped by the United
States during combat, target-
ing Daesh fighters in a remote
part of the eastern Nangarhar
province. The bomb was thirty
feet in height, 21,000 pounds in
weight, and created a mushroom
cloud that could be seen from
20 miles away. The unexpected
attack caused much controver-
sy as people worldwide accused
the US of using Afghanistan as
a testing ground to target a ter-
rorist group not as prominently
threatening to the region as the
resurgent Taliban.
The bomb destroyed the
groups hideout, a tunnel and
cave system used as a defensive
against ground attacks. Accord-
ing to Afghan officials, at least 94
Daesh fighters were killed. It was

their privileges revoked can re-
gain them by attending school
everyday and having their ab-
sences excused when they are ill.
The opinions of students vary
greatly. The Hi-Tide interviewed
three seniors, who have asked to
remain anonymous, about their
thoughts on the large-scale loss
of senior privileges.
One student, who has not lost
his privileges, told us that he is
satisfied with the actions the ad-
ministration has taken. I think
its the people who were missing
school getting their comeup-
pance. I mean, I came to school,
and I have my privileges still, he
said.
I think its a waste of time,
because you can still be absent--
you just have to call in sick, said

reported that most of the neigh-
boring civilians had previously
fled during past combat. Howev-
er, there were different reports of
the bombs affecting civilians. For
instance, an elderly man claimed
the blast was so loud it caused
his grand-daughter to experi-
ence some hearing loss.

privileges could be revoked in
certain cases. The Hi-Tide re-
peatedly requested a copy of this
form from the administration;
however, they did not provide
it. The administration also could
not provide us with an exact

Lead in Our Water?
San Diego Unified Tests for Contaminants in
Drinking Water

SDUSD will begin to test for
lead in the water of school cam-
puses after finding high levels in
the testing program began a few
months after high levels of met-
al, including lead, and bacteria
were found at several San Ysidro
schools. The testing at San Diego
Unified schools is expected to
be completed by the end of the
school year in June.
KPBS reported that testing
first took place at Emerson-Ban-
dini Elementary School after a
nurse saw a therapy dog hesitant
to drink the water, which con-
tained a variety of contaminants,
including lead. District officials
said that the testing will be car-
ried out in the morning before
classes start. A Fox News report
stated that, Up to five samples
will be taken at each site: from
drinking fountains, cafeterias
and food preparation areas.

ent at high levels, SDUSD Chief
Operations Officer Drew Row-
lands said the district will re-
place fixtures and make plumb-
ing repairs.
According to district officials,
buildings built before 1986 are
more at risk for lead contamina-
tion. Isabella McNeil, San Diego
Unified School District spokes-
person explained the process by
which the district will go about
the testing to NBC, Five schools
will be tested daily, beginning in
the southeast corner of the dis-
trict where some of the oldest
district schools are located. City
staff will proceed north and west
until all testing is complete.

Why we should be more mindful of La Jollas iconic seals

Summertime in San Diego:
warm beaches, refreshing wa-
ter, soft sunshine... Imagine
you and your closest friends
all taking a trip to one of La
Jollas pristine beaches. You
spread out your towel and lay
in the sun, reading a book,
listening to music. Youre en-
joying your day. Suddenly,
click! You look up; a guy in a
floral shirt and cargo shorts
lowers his phone to send his
latest selfie out to the online
world captioning it, A day at
the beach.
Weve all seen the photos;
the adorable seals of the La
Jolla Cove, all laying in a row
with their bellies to the sky,
enjoying the sun just like peo-
ple do. If you were to un-crop

Mexico will Pay: A popu-
lar phrase used by President
Trump and his supporters
during the election and even
after it. Although the contro-
versy surrounding the phrase
shifted out of public focus it
has recently reentered the
public eye. Amazon released
a costume with those words
on it. This costume was clear-
ly meant as a gag but none-
theless people became infuri-
ated with it. One commenter
said, only a criminal would
force to another person to
pay for something that only
benefits to him and not the
person who pays , but it does
not surprises me that behav-
ior from Americans, after all
US is the country that uses
to invade, destroy and do
that image, you would also
see the hoards of locals and
tourists alike who grapple
for the seals attention with
cameras, loud voices, and,
occasionally, human food. As
residents of San Diego who
are used to the seals, its im-
portant for us to be aware of
how our residents with flip-
pers are being treated.
My question to you is sim-
ple: if youre so desperate for
a picture of the animal, why
cant you be patient enough
to wait for a good opportuni-
ty to take one?
Recently the La Jolla Light
investigated the signs,
which bear the emblem of
the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administra-
tion (NOAA) that have been
posted around the beaches.
Some signs distinguish seals
from sea lions; others sug-
looting over other countries
furthermore quality publica-
tions such as Allure had this
to say, To be fair, its possi-
ble Costume Agent is poking
fun at Trumps claims hes
going to build a wall, and not
actually advocating doing so.
Still, it comes off tasteless
and extremely offensive not
only to Latino people, but
to everyone who, you know,
cares about their fellow cit-
izens. Politics are stressful
enough lately without bring-
ing Halloween costumes into
the equation. It is clear many
people are viewing the cos-
tume as a political statement
first and a gag piece second.
The article brings up
that the costume could be
seen as extremely offensive
to Latino people and that the
costume is tasteless. Howev-
er I disagree. Although I do
not condone hatred nor do
I harbor any ill will towards
Latino people. I do not see
how a costume with a slogan
on it can be seen as Extreme-
ly offensive. Was it off color
humor? Sure it was, but its a
Halloween costume, its not
the Amazon CEO going out
and condoning Trump and his
wall. Even if the CEO of Am-
azon was condoning Trumps
wall there would be nothing
wrong with it. An individu-
al can hold any opinion they
want as long as it does not
hurt people.
Furthermore the de-
mands to take this costume
out of the Amazon store are
misguided. A CEO of a com-
pany can put out whatever
product they want regardless
if it offends people, as part of
freedom of expression in the
Constitution.
The costume should stay up
on Amazon regardless of
whether people are offended
by it. It does not incite hatred
and furthermore should be
taken lightly. In the words of
Ken Newman, Lighten up
gest proper ways to interact
with the sea life. While some
say the signs guilt beach-go-
ers into avoiding seal spots,
the signs are important to the
wildlife. The crowding and ca-
joling of the seals has threat-
ened their safety and comfort.
Seals prefer space, especially
those who are mating and
pupping, as many of them
do at the Childrens Pool.
(Imagine being on a date and
having a bunch of strangers
staring at you!) Some moth-
er seals abandon pups if they
feel the pups have gotten too
close to humans.
In fact, residents of the
South Casa Beach sent com-
plaints and videos to the
NOAA expressing their con-
cern for the seals, especial-
ly when beach-goers try to
physically touch the seals.

As frustrations about the
historic and bizarre 2016
presidential election continue
to brew, our own state, Cali-
fornia, is beginning to show
rising trends for its own
version of the United King-
doms Brexit, or in this case
what people are referring to
as Calexit. The Calexit move-
ment, also referred to as Yes
California, at this stage is still
very small and grassroots, yet
has seen a striking jump from
100 volunteers to 8,500 since
the November 2016 election
of Donald Trump.
California has historically
leftist policies and is the most
populous state in the union,
so the right wing push back
is undeniably frustrating for
many of its denizens who
seek rapid and progressive
change throughout the United
States. California is also one
of the more efficient states,

contributed to the production
of more permanent signs.
The NOAA is also consider-
ing educating the public with
tactile displays of sea life, to
give them the experience of
touching the seals without
physically disrupting the ani-
mals.
The seals are wild animals -
not part of a petting zoo. Its
important for us to respect
their space and take care of
their environment instead of
disrupting them for our own
enjoyment (or a few likes on
Instagram). Watching and
enjoying them in their natu-
ral habitat is a great experi-
ence for everyone to see wild
animals. However, there is a
definite balance between ob-
serving and disrupting.

However, despite California
having a flourishing economy
and largely liberal consensus,
removal from the rest of the
United States could be much
more problematic in reality
than in theory.
Succession hasnt been se-
riously suggested by a state
since the civil war, and is his-
torically not received well and
without violence by the rest of
the nation. With the already
dominant division of our na-
tion, this would only increase
tensions and push the left and
right farther apart, creating
intense political gridlock and
cultural malaise.
The energies of those advo-
cating for Calexit should be
promptly reallocated to more
pertinent and noble causes,
such as civil rights and so-
cial equity. Succession will
not solve the issues at hand,
it will only further drive the
nation into turmoil.

of self expression and a por-
trayal of frustrations at so-
cietys inequalities since the
founding of our nation. Its
no secret that the U.S. has ex-
perienced all different kinds
of discrimination through its
241 years of existence. And it
is no surprise that continuous
discrimination towards cer-
tain groups and our lack of so-
cial progress has led many to
feel fed up and unheard. This
is why some protests will take
a more aggressive turn. When
peaceful protests are respond-
ed to with tear gas and police
brutality, it is only natural for
people to want to stand up
and fight back. This article is
in no way a promotion of vi-
olent protest. I personally do
not condone the Berkeley ri-
ots but I will not dismiss them

For many college bound
high school seniors, like my-
self, the days of obsessively
refreshing our emails, stalking
College Confidential, and cry-
ing over Naviance graphs has
come to an end. Weve finally
done what we thought was
going to be impossible during
the stressful, dismal abyss
that was junior year weve
been accepted to college! In-
stead, we have now entered
blissful daydreams of our new
young adult lives, introducto-
ry Facebook groups, and the
concerning lack of motivation
to even complete assignments
the class period before.
Yet, another problem arises.
Some of us didnt simply get
accepted to college, we got
accepted to colleges. Plural.
If youre lucky, your bundle
of acceptance letters include
that dream school whose
sweatshirt youve been wear-
ing for the last four years, but
if youre not, the decision be-
comes overwhelming.

school that will be most fitting
to you and perfectly support
you in your emotional and
intellectual growth through-

believe there are better ways
to express ones frustrations
and resorting to violence and
public vandalism is not the
most efficient method. How-
ever, people are so hyperfo-
cused on their methods rath-
er than the meaning behind
them. Why are these people
angry and how can we as a
society change so this does
not occur in the future are
the questions we should be
asking ourselves. But instead,
we criticize and condemn the
demonstrators instead of lis-
tening to their concerns. It is
our ignorance and lack of ac-
tion that has led to their fury.
Many argue that the pro-
testers are hypocritical
by preventing freedom of
speech on a campus that is
known for the promotion of
this concept. However, many
fail to realize that the protest-
ers voicing their opinions on
the visiting speakers is just
out the next four years, and
second to finally have an an-
swer to the only question any
family member has been able
to ask you over the past few
months: where are you go-
ing to college?!
So you ask yourself: should
you splurge and purchase
that $450 plane ticket and
take a week off of school to
see those east coast schools,
or road trip up to Northern
California? Or should you
just dive head over heels into
college next fall without visit-
ing?
Well unfortunately, the an-
swer is a mix of both.
1.) Do your research. Find out
what the atmosphere is like
and make sure that it at least
sounds like an ideal fit.
2.) Scope your financial aid
packet. See how much you
will be paying for the next
few years, discuss it with your
parents and make sure that
you will not be drowning in
debt for the rest of your life.
3.) Go visit if you can. The
school may sound perfect on
paper, but when actually on
campus your worst night-
mare.
4.) Finally, de-stress and trust
your gut. Youve made it!

The age old question for
High Schoolers: is it better
to spend the summer travel-
ing and broadening horizons,
or is getting a job or intern-
ship a superior investment
of time. On one hand, there
is the possibility of making
money and/or acquiring new
and important skills. On the
other, the spiritual growth
that comes from exploration
and the enjoyment of youth is
something that cannot be dis-
counted.
Jobs and internships are a
fantastic way to be proactive
during ones summer and to
train skills that will be used
throughout ones life. But a
lifetime is long and there is
plenty of time for working.
Unless there is an absolute
necessity to work either to
support oneself or ones fami-
ly, however, it is not the most
viable option.

Tesla Becomes Most Valuable Minimum Wage

Tesla Stock surpassed both
GM and Ford. Tesla Stocks
reached an all-time height of
$312.39, making it more valu-
able than both GM(GM.N)
and Ford(F). This marks the
first time that the most valu-
able auto maker in the U.S. is
not based in Detroit. Investor
interest in the Silicon Valley
based automaker indicates a
shift in investors minds in the
auto industry. Although Tesla
is not a profitable company,
due to massive spending on
building up its infrastruc-
ture in order to support the
massive amounts of orders
expected for the upcoming
Model 3, supporters argue
that its ability for growth in
the future justify the stocks
value. An analyst for Piper
Jaffray, Alexander Potter, up-
graded the stock from neu-
tral to overweight. He de-
scribed Teslas products as

of several jokes over Twitter
these past few days, is the
newest brand on the Internet,
taking over AOL and Yahoo.
Created by Verizon, Oath will
become the umbrella to en-
compass and promote things
such as Yahoo, Yahoo Finance,
Yahoo Sports, TechCrunch,
and Huffington Post. The re-
sult of a $4.5 billion acqui-
sition by Verizon, Oath, and
CEO Tim Armstrong, have
big plans.
Lately, Yahoo lives in the
shadows as a brand. With
Oath - new, upcoming, and
interesting to the public - Ya-
hoo has a chance to emerge
as a large brand once again.
Information from all three
brands - Yahoo, AOL, and
Verizon - will come together
under Oath, in hopes that the
company will appeal to pre
existing customers.
With limited internet pri-
vacy regulations, many fear
that the information they
confide in Verizon and vari-
ous companies are at risk for

Amazon Introduces
Cash Purchases

On Monday, April 3, 2017,
Amazon launched Amazon
Cash: a new feature that al-
lows customers to pay for
their items using cash. Cus-
tomers are able to add to their
balance using a brick-and-
mortar retailer, at Amazon
partner stores such as CVS
Pharmacy, Speedway, and
Sheetz.
When customers decide
they want to add to their
balance, a barcode is sent in
one of two ways: by text or
through the Amazon app.
From here, the customer can
either print the barcode at
home, or show it to a cashier

Though many citizens both
oppose and support an in-
crease in the minimum wage,
an increase in the existing
minimum wage would have a
number of both positive and
negative effects on both the
economy and society.
One positive effect, the in-
crease in the minimum wage
has the potential to help at
least 15 million people in the
US and it would also greatly
benefit many women.
This increase in wages
would, of course, inevita-
bly lead to higher prices for
fast food and other services
which contain large amounts
at one of the partner stores,
electronically, where the
barcode is then scanned and
money can be added. Users
can add anywhere between
$15 and $500, according to
Amazon.
Once the deposit is com-
plete, a confirmation email
or text message is sent. This
service does not require any
fees, and is a quick and easy
way to deposit money. Addi-
tionally, the new option will
allow users to make purchas-
es on Amazon without ever
having to input their credit
or debit card information.

Most of you have, at one
time or another, heard about
stocks. Stocks are mentioned
in articles, on the radio, may-
be even on T.V., but there is a
good chance you do not know
what they are, or are confused
as to how they work. Well,
what exactly is a stock? What
is the stock market? How do I
buy and sell stocks? How do
I know which stocks to buy?
These are all good questions
that, hopefully, we will an-
swer in this article.
First, we must make a clear
distinction between the two
types of stock markets. The
first type of stocks (most like-
ly the one you think about
when you think about stocks)
is investing. Investing is done
when you give money to a
company or business so that
they can grow or expand
with hopes that, eventually,
the company will be worth
more than it was at the origi-
nal investment. When invest-
ing, you receive a share of
the company and you want
the company to do well and
you want the company to be
successful because you will
make money. You are look-
ing to the future when you
invest, because you believe
in a company or business and
you believe that your money
will help them grow. Next,
we have speculation. Specu-
lation is the act of trading in
an asset or conducting a fi-
nancial transaction that has a
significant risk of losing most
or all of the initial outlay with
the expectation of substan-
tial gain.This market is more
risky because you are buying
stocks with hopes that you
can sell them in a short time
and make money. People who
speculate are not concerned
with how the company grows
whether that be its factories,
research and development, or
the business plan. With spec-
ulation the risk of loss is more
than offset by possible, huge
gain.
Now that we have separat-
ed the two markets, we can
answer the question, what are
stocks? When you buy a stock
in a corporation, you do not
own part of the corporation.
This is commonly thought to
be the truth, however, legal-
ly we treat corporations as
their own person. Meaning,
they have to pay taxes, can be
sued, can own property, etc..
The idea being that corpora-
tions can own their own as-
sets. Therefore, if a company
buys a new building they own
the building, you do not own
part of that building. The cor-
porate property is legally sep-
arated from the shareholder.
This is good because the lia-
bility of both the corporation
and the shareholder is lim-
ited. If the corporation goes
bankrupt and the government
orders that all assets of the
corporation be sold, you are
not affected. The same applies
to the shareholder, if you
went bankrupt the corpora-
tion would not be responsi-
ble. When you buy stocks you
own a part of the total shares
issued by the company. There-
fore, if you own 10% of the
shares of the company, you
own 100% of 10% of the com-
pany. Just because you own a
portion of the shares does not
mean that you are in control
of the company. This is called
separation of ownership and
control. So if you dont have
control in the company why
buy stocks? When you are a
shareholder you can vote in
shareholder meetings, you
get dividends from the cor-
porations profits and you are
allowed to sell your stocks to
anyone else.
Stocks or equity/ equities
are given out by companies
in return for money so that
they can expand or work on
new projects. Stocks are first
issued in the primary market,
which is when the company

sells them directly to you.
Then, stocks are purchased in
the secondary market which
is buying and selling from
other shareholders.
What are the different types
of stocks? The first type
of stock are private stocks.
These fall under the original
shareholders of the company.
For instance, if a company is
formed the founders and any
investors have private stocks;
these are hard to trade. How-
ever, as the company grows
the need for expansion will
require the company to go
public. This means that the
company can sell more shares
to the public, which can sell
to other people. When a com-
pany becomes public the per-
centage of shares the original
shareholders become dilut-
ed and worth less. Common
stocks are what people usu-
ally refer to when they talk
about stocks. Common shares
are a claim on profits or divi-
dends and give voting rights.
Prefered stocks are similar to
common stocks except that
they guarantee a fixed divi-
dend and they do not come
with voting rights. This type
of stock is less common and
sometimes never offered from
a company. One advantage
to having preferred stocks
is that if there is liquidation
the prefered shareholders are
paid off before the common
shareholders.
This article has basic infor-
mation, that does not go into
depth by any means, about
stocks. Stocks are important
in life because they are a large
element of our economy. Be-
ing able to understand stocks
and the stock market will
put you ahead in life and can
potentially be a source of in-
come. For further information

On Tuesday April 4th it was
announced that Ralph Lauren
will be closing one of their
stores, located on Fifth Ave-
nue in New York City. It was
stated that the reason why
the store will be closing is be-
cause their sales are declining
and it would save them some
money.

closing another 50 stores in
order to save money, in the
process they will also be let-
ting go of many of their em-

A recent study by Wallethub
set out to find the best places to
start a small business in Ameri-
ca.
The survey included an aston-
ishing 1,261 individual munici-
palities. The factor used in rank-
ing consisted of the business
environment, access to resourc-
es, business cost, the average
work week, finance accessibility
and office space availability.
They also took into account
the minimum wages of the re-
gions and the cost of real estate.

currently located around the
midwest and towards the east
of the country, while the worst
places were near the coasts spe-
cifically due to the rising prices
of land.

NHL will not take part in the 2018 winter
Olympics

On Tuesday April 3rd,
it was announced that the
National Hockey League
would not be part of the
2018 Winter Olympics af-
ter previously winning five
consecutive winters.
This coming years ab-
sence is due to the fact that
the International Olympic
Committee decided that
they would not be paying
for the costs of travel, in-
surance, and accommoda-
tion for the 141 players.
The International Ice
Hockey Federation, also
known as the IIHF, said
that they had the money
to fund the NHL but were
concerned about their as-
sets.

Introduction of the Infield Chatter app

It has been announced the
Major League Baseball play-
ers will be launching their
own app called Infield Chat-
ter in which the players can
talk to their fans about base-
ball.
In this app, they are hoping
to attract younger baseball
fans.
The app includes player
chats, podcasts, interviews,
and giveaways.
Furthermore, the app al-
lows for them to engage with
other people and players.
Once you have signed on to
the app, you are automatical-
ly subscribed to Major League
Trivia, Stat of the Day, and
Major League Lifts in which
you can watch how the play-
ers train.
Major League Baseball is
not in association with the

Isiah Thomas Family Tragedy
Celtics player sister passes away

On April 15th, NBA Celt-
ics player Isiah Thomas sister,
Chyna Thomas, passed away af-
ter a single-car accident.
The devastating news reached
Isiah right after his practice that
day. He and his entire family
were shocked and devastated.
Chyna was only 23 years old,
she was way too young to have
been taken from her family.
Isiah has been handling the
news in a very unique way.
He has taken his pain and has
channeled it towards playing
the best basketball he has ever
played in his NBA career.
When I found out the news,
I wanted to give up and quit.
Never in my life have I thought
about quittingI realized quit-
ting isnt an option, added
Thomas, Thats the easy way
out. I will keep going for my sis-
ter because I know she wouldnt
want me to stop. I love you,
Chyna, and I miss you so much,
and everything I do for the rest
of my life will be for you.
This heartbreaking news is
something that could break a
player, especially so close to the
NBA playoffs; however, Isiah
has somehow found the will to
become a stronger player and
man because of it.
Isiah says he is now playing
for his sister, and all of the at-
tention on his game and the
publicity is not for him its for
his sister. How successful he is
from here on out is all for his
sister.
After the Celtics sealed the
series against the Bulls, Isiah
flew to his sisters services.

Races return to San Diego after eight years

On April 15th and 16th, the
Red Bull Air Races returned to
San Diego Bay.
After eight years since host-
ing in San Diego, the races
have finally returned, to the
delight of many fans.
The Red Bull Air Race World
Championship is the highest
level of aerobatic air racing in
the world. Red Bull also has
several lower level race com-
petitions.
Japanese pilot, Yoshihide
Muroya, won the race overall,
making the San Diego com-
petition the second win of his
career. According to Red Bull,
Muroya won by a margin of
1.925s with a time of 58.529s.
Finishing in second was Pe-
ter Podlunsek, with a time of
1:00.454s, and this was Pond-
too challenging after Saturdays
tragedy he did not have to rush
back for Game 1 of an Eastern
Conference semifinal series
against the Washington Wiz-
ards.
Isiah, however, came back
better than ever, and scored 33
points on 11-of-23 shooting and

Longtime SDSU Head
Basketball Coach Retires

On April 10th, SDSUs head
basketball coach Steve Fisher
resigned from his position.
To some fans, he is the man
responsible for building San
Diego State Universitys bas-
ketball program into some-
thing memorable.
Fishers legacy will not be
forgotten, due to his remark-
able impact on the SDSU
Mens Basketball program.
Fisher made his legacy in
other places too. His impres-
sive career as a head coach
started at the University of
Michigan, leading the Big
Blue Mens basketball team
to a National Championship
in 1989.
This wasnt his first jour-
ney to the Final Four. When
Fisher played basketball in
college at Illinois State he
lead the Redbirds to the Final
Four in the 1967 NCAA tour-
nament.
During his coaching tenure
at Michigan, Fisher signed
some of the most well known
college basketball players.
Known as the Fab Five,
stars Chris Webber, Jalen
Rose, Ray Jackson, Jimmy
King, and Juwan Howard all
signed onto Michigans team
under Fisher.
In 1999, Fisher begun his
career at San Diego State
and transformed them from
a team with a 5-23 record
during his inaugural season,
to a 34-3 record in 2010.
Fisher was seen as a ray of
hope after many years of de-
clining SDSU basketball.
After three years with the
program, Fisher lead the Az-
tecs to their first post-season
appearance since 1985.
He eventually led them to
eight different NCAA ap-
pearances, with six in a row
from 2009-2015.
Fisher made a huge impact
on the success of San Diego
State basketball program.
His legacy and impact will
never be forgotten.
Fisher is stepping down
as head coach in order to be
able to support his son, who
is battling ALS.
Fisher will be succeeded by
Brian Dutcher, who he has
been training since 2011.
Fisher will stay on the
coaching staff as a special as-
sistant coach.
At the age of seventy-two,
and with fifty seasons of be-
ing on the sidelines behind
him, Fisher is about to em-
bark on a much deserved
break from the game, in or-
der to spend time with his
family.

New Treatment Brings Hope to Lung
Cancer Patients
Opdivo is the new revolutionary alternative to treating Lung Cancer

Lung cancer remains the
leading cause of cancer-re-
lated deaths globally. Treat-
ments for lung typically begin
with chemotherapy to erase
cancer cells within the lungs.
After the cancer spreads to
distant sites in the body, treat-
ment switches from eradicat-
ing the cancer to improving
the duration of survival. Re-
cent preliminary research on
a new treatment was present-
ed at the annual meeting of
the American Association for
Cancer Research in Washing-
ton, D.C.. The study was fund-
ed by Bristol-Myers Squibb,
the creator of Opdivo.
This new drug, named
Opdivo, was approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-
ministration (FDA) to treat
non-small cell lung cancer
(NSCLC). Opdivo blocks a
molecule commonly referred
to as PD-1 which suppresses
the immune systems ability
to fight cancer cells. Opdivo
gives the immune system the
ability to recognize and at-
tack cancer cells, rather than
attacking the cancer cells for
the immune systems. It is part
of a new class of therapeutic
drugs called immunothera-

Recently, at Massachusettss
Worcester Polytechnic Insti-
tute, a team of researchers
have come to find that spin-
ach works the same way heart
tissue does. It has been prov-
en that scientists were able to
convert a simple spinach leaf
into beating heart muscle.
This is a major breakthrough
for medicine, and will hope-
fully someday save lives. The
main limiting factor for tissue
engineering is the lack of a
vascular network, says study
co-author Joshua Gersh-
lak, a graduate student from
Worcester Polytechnic Insti-
tute. Later, scientists will find
a way to use spinach to build
a mini version of a working
pies, or immuno-oncology
drugs which are aimed to help
the body to recognize pro-
teins on cells like PD-1, which
trick the immune system into
thinking theyre harmless,
which causes the metastasiz-
ing of cancerous tumors.
After laboratory tests were
conducted to detect levels of
PD-1 in lung cancer patients,
Opdivo was compared in an
experiment to Docetaxel, a
type of chemotherapy. Opdi-
vo showed improved survival
among patients with elevated
PD-1 levels. The use of Op-
divo has elevated the 5 year
survival rate among lung can-
cer patients 5% to 16%. These
patients had previously been
part of an international study
and had stopped responding
to the typical platinum based
chemotherapy treatment. Op-
divo showed greater survival
periods than Docetaxel with
less than 10% of patients ex-
periencing side-effects (com-
pared to the 54% of patients
treated by Docetaxel). Op-
divo was also reported to
shrink tumors greater than
Docetaxel.
Dr. Julie Brahmer of Johns
Hopkins University tells
Health Day Magazine Immu-
notherapy may play a role in
almost any cancer, meaning
heart, which will aid in tissue
regeneration. The way the
spinach works is that the bio-
medical team replaces plant
cells with human cells, this
transforms the plants veins
into a functioning blood ves-
sel system.
One of the most distinct
traits of a spinach leaf are the
thin veins that deliver water
and nutrients to its cells. Now,
scientists have found a way
use these plant veins to rep-
licate the way blood moves
through human tissue. In or-
der to do this, it is necessary
to modify a spinach leaf in the
lab and remove its plant cells,
which leaves behind merely a
framework made of cellulose.
Cellulose is biocompatible
and has been used in a wide
variety of regenerative med-
icine applications, such as
cartilage tissue engineering,
bone tissue engineering, and
wound healing, the authors

that this new class of drugs
may not only be limited to
lung cancer, but can expand
to many types of cancer in
the near future, which the
U.S. National Cancer Institute
predicts will include mela-
noma, head and neck cancer,
Hodgkin lymphoma, kidney
cancer and bladder cancer.
Dr. Brahmer states that Op-
divo may not be suitable for
patients with autoimmune
diseases such as lupus, or for
transplant patients, and ex-
periments will be conducted
to further test these theories.
The approval of Opdivo
is limited to lung cancer pa-
tients with the specific type of
cancer - squamous non-small
cell lung cancer that has al-
ready metastasized and be-
come resistant to chemother-
apy. Unfortunately, this only
appeals to a small percentage
of lung cancer patients; scien-
tists hope to expand the regu-
lations to help more patients.
Many researchers are now
conducting experiments that
combine other immunothera-
py drugs to further raise the
survival rate. Regardless, the
approval of this new drug is a
noteworthy achievement for
the scientific community, and
has given many patients hope
for the future.

ing that blood cells can flow
through this system.
Hopefully, spinach will help
patients who have cardiac
problems in replacing dam-
aged tissue.
South Carolina Teach-
er Raises Funds to Give
Bikes to Students
How one teachers giving spirit changed her
low-income students lives

In North Charleston, South
Carolina, first grade teacher
Katie Blomquist unveiled a
surprise to the students of her
school that was months in the
making. On March 30, she re-
vealed the fleet of 650 bicycles
that she had bought for ev-
ery one of the students at her
school, Pepperhill Elementary.
Blomquist had been plan-
ning the surprise since the
summer of 2016. She had ini-
tially hoped to get the bikes to
the students by late December
of that year, but had to post-
pone the unveiling due to the
sheer logistics of purchasing
and manufacturing 650 bikes.
The educator enlisted the
help of Affordabike, a compa-
ny in the area that does as the
name suggests- helps produce
affordable bicycles for cus-
tomers. In all, the bikes cost
$80,000 to produce and bring
to the students. Blomquist was
able to raise the entirety of the

Aloes benefits are far great-
er than ones just for the skin,
its good for your insides too!
Aloe Vera drinks have been
proven to have anti-inflam-
matory and anti-oxidant
properties that help soothe
conditions like diabetes (one
study found it reduced fast-
ing blood glucose levels), and
diverticulitis. A body with
an acidic pH is a breeding
ground for disease, however,
Aloe Vera aids in the loss of
an acidic pH. Additionally,
Aloe can help with hydration,
liver function, constipation,
creating clear skin, nutrition-
al boosts, heartburn relief,
and numerous digestive ben-
efits. These beneficial drinks

however there are many dif-

is still in its infancy, unprece-
dented cuts to UN funding were
ordered to be made last month.
Exact numbers remain unclear,
yet it is estimated that around 37
percent of the currently allocat-
ed funds will be annihilated.
Many stand bewildered by
these measures, which they see
as drastic and draconian, be-
cause these funds are redistrib-
uted by the United Nations to
keep peace, provide healthcare

portant UN members to be ex-
pectant of restrictive cuts in the
flow of funds derived from the
United States. UN officials plan
to strategize various ways to al-
leviate spending from beloved

ident of the La Jolla Crossroads
apartment complex, killed one
and wounded seven others in the
pool area on the evening of April
30 before police shot and killed
him after he aimed his gun in
their direction. The shooting be-
gan at approximately 6 p.m. and
ended less than 45 minutes later.
Prior to the shooting, the pool
area was occupied by a group
of people celebrating a birthday
party. Selis began shooting at the
group as he was sitting by the
pool and fired multiple rounds.

Ms. Brammers Honors Physiology Course is
No Longer an Option for Next Year

It has been recently announced
that for the 2017-2018 school
year, the Honors Physiology
course has been removed from
the La Jolla High curriculum.
At the moment, there is no
word on why the course has
been cancelled.
The Honors Physiology class
at La Jolla High is a rigorous and
hands on biology-related course
that includes labs, practicums,
and most famously, an animal
dissection.
Many who wish to pursue a
career in the medical field take
this class, but it is also an option
for those who wish to be taught
laxed when police arrived and
was reportedly drinking a beer
as he reloaded his gun.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley
Zimmerman explained that there
has been no evidence of motive.
She also explained that many of
the victims were in critical con-
dition, as one died in the hospi-
tal shortly after arriving, while
others suffer multiple gunshot
wounds, and one suffers a bro-
ken wrist, hand, and concussion
after trying to escape by climb-
ing the fence.
The victims were predomi-
nantly African American, but it
seemed that the victims were
targeted for no reason other than
presence, according to Zimmer-

ruling by the administration.
Over 250 current and past stu-
dents, parents, and concerned
community members have
voiced their opinions in the pe-
titions comment section.

The Rise of Kung Fu Kenny

Kendrick Lamars newest al-
bum D*MN, his fourth studio
project, dropped on April 14th,
to an audience of outreached
hands, (his first week sales ex-
ceeding 600k).
For his first time, Kendrick
takes his focus off of consisten-
cy, strays from his jazz influence,
and creates an album of frac-
tured concepts that coalesce into
a handful of main themes and
questions surrounding topics
like race relations, the evolution
of hip-hop culture, depression,
and relationships with god.
Kendrick reinvents himself,
and in comparison produces his
most scattered album consisting
of an array of different songs
both sonicaly and emotionally.
The album D*MN though,
doesnt so much explore the
answers to these thematic ques-
tions, as it does the struggle in-
volved in understanding them.
This perspective change al-
lows for K-dot to create a new
image of himself as an angry, he-
donistic savior of hip-hop, which
bleeds into his more unhappy,
raw and vulnerable sounding vo-
cal performances and verses.
Kendrick establishes a strong
religious undertone throughout
the album as well.
On the the track FEAR, Kenny
presents a reality in which Na-
tive and African-Americans are
the true Israelites (children of
God), and the oppression these
cultures faced historically can be
attributed to their straying from
God.
Kendrick himself, feels pun-
ished by God for not upholding
his moral code, and his suffering
in life is a direct product of his
own weakness or wickedness.

and is often revered for his heavy
influence on modern rap.
Yes was formed in 1968 in
London, England. They have
performed songs in a number
of genres, including blues, pop,
rock, and jazz. Their many trans-
formations were well-publicized,

disconnect with his more flow-
ery, poetic history, and embrace
more simplified, blunt, straight-
forward lyrics.
The production and instru-
mentals are very strong when
contextualized with the lyrics,
seeing as most of the beats pro-
vide only the nutrients essential
to Kendricks verses and lyrics.
Through the entirety of the al-
bum, the good kid adds skits,
ad-libs, and other miscellaneous
add-ons to forward his narrative,
and connect better with fans
trying to listen to the album as
a whole. DAMN is left to the au-
dience to decipher, which may
prove to either hinder or help
further his messages on this
modern-classic.

A new Star Wars trailer has
been released and people are al-
ready assuming how the new Star
Wars will play out.
Many claim Episode 7 was a
parallel to Episode 4 and many are
assuming that this coming movie
may be a parallel to Episode 5.
Although many people dont like
the parallel plot lines present in
the recent movies, people will still
flock to see the new up-and-com-
ing episode.
As of right now, the trailer
doesnt reveal much. It shows
Luke standing on an island and
some speeders flying over a salt
flat of some kind punctuated with
various action scenes.
Many theories are surfacing
over the plot of the movie.
Ominously called The Last Jedi,
people are wondering if this may
be the end of Luke Skywalk-
er. Many people were shocked
at the death of Han Solo during

The directors, who are mostly
men with the exception of Marsha
Griffin, a supervisor director, have
all been involved in previous Mar-
vel hits so there is no doubt this
new show will also be a tremen-
dous hit.
Spider Man will be appearing in
theaters July 7th, and instead of
having the character be a scientist,
a billionaire, or a soldier, it will be
written in the place of a kid, sup-
posedly one so innocent he never
punches a single person or villain.
Every reaction he has will be relat-
able with the children/teenagers of
todays society, which is an inter-
esting idea considering most little
kids dream of having superpowers.
The basic idea behind the new
movie is that after living a seem-
ingly normal life, Spider Man finds
his powers of being able to extend
webs from his forearm and joins
the Avengers, including Iron Man,
in order to gain knowledge on
how to successfully use his powers
and fight off the enemies that are
threatening the world.
The new Marvel series is already
getting a lot of hype and I cant
wait to see for myself what all of
these amazing producers have put
together so creatively.
Hopefully it is distinguishable
from the other Spider Man movies.

13 Reasons Why is the story of
a high school girl, Hannah Baker,
who commits suicide and records
thirteen tapes on as to why she kills
herself.
Each episode is about a different
person who leads her to commit sui-
cide.
The series is from the point of
view of Clay Jensen, who was friends
with Hannah and received the tapes
after school one day.
Every person on the tapes has
gotten them passed on and Clay is
the second to last to get the tapes.
Everyone who has received the
tapes doesnt want them to be ex-
posed to the public because they
dont want to be blamed for Han-
nahs death.
The show is very heavy and shows
the reality of what teens go through
in high school everyday.
There are multiple different mes-
sages to take from the show: people
need to start being more kind to
each other, we need to speak out

Tale as Old as
Time

The new Disney live action,
Beauty and the Beast hit the-
aters on March 17.
The film has reached nearly 1
billion dollars since its release.
Director Bill Condons live
action version of the 1991 classic
film is up for an Oscar nomina-
tion.
The movie is not only visually
pleasing, but also very similar to
the 1991 classic animation. It is
a modern take on a Disney clas-
sic, raves Rolling Stones Maga-
zine.
A noticeable difference be-
tween the two movies are the
back stories of the characters.
In the live-action film, it is
shown how Belle (Emma Wat-
son) lost her mother, as well
as how the spoiled prince was
transformed into a hairy beast.
Although the movie was en-
joyed by people of all ages, it
was banned from minors in Rus-
sia, and a theater in Alabama be-
cause they believed it promoted
gay propaganda.
As most seem to be excited to
view the childhood classic which
is rated PG, Russian officials are
only making the movie available
for adults.
The film does not make it obvi-
ous that LeFou is fond of Gastn,
only at the very end of the film
does the audience see LeFou
dancing with another man.

suicide prevention experts seem to
claim that the show actually could
do more harm than good but since
the show has been released, more
people have been reaching out for
help.
The show is co-produced by Sele-
na Gomez, which has allowed the
show to gain popularity.
The directors, producers, mental
health experts, and cast members
of the show made a 30 minute fea-
turette, Beyond the Reasons to
give more insight on the show.
In this featurette, Gomez states,
We wanted to do it in a way where
it was honest and we wanted to
make something that can hopefully
help people because suicide should
never be an option.
The show has multiple scenes that
viewers have considered to be very
heavy and hard to watch because of
the intention to depict the reality
of suicide and what actually hap-
pens. Because of the graphic nature
of these scenes, several episodes in
the series begin with warnings for
graphic content.
Creator, Brian Yorkey told
EW.com, We worked very hard not
to be gratuitous, but we did want it
to be painful to watch because we
wanted it to be very clear that there
is nothing, in any way, worthwhile
about suicide.
This TV series has changed teens
views of suicide and has also alert-
ed them to the importance of being
kind to others.
