EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

Today Bangladesh economy widely depends on garments sector. Huge amount of foreign
currency earned by garments sector. In recent days our garments sector widely reputed
and compete foreign garments industry in global market. Our garments product to
maintain high quality and competively low price. UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD is a
garments industry. Our group visited UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD and to acquire practical
knowledge four functional area of management.

UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD follow and maintain four functional area of management. It is
a well-established Private Company and 100% owned by local investor.

UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD is a 100% export oriented Organization established in


Bangladesh.

In this report I have tried my best to show the real scenario of four functional area and if
any deficit in this process, give recommendations and suggestions to improve this
process.

Objectives of the study

The main objective of this study is to fulfill the academic requirement as well as to gather
practical and theoretical knowledge about the management of the company. This practical
knowledge will help us to face challenges in our future business career. In addition to the
principal objective, the followings are some of the common but significant objective of
this type of study.

To know about the company profile and production process and management
hierarchy.
To know about company marketing policy and practices.
To know about the company financial performance.
To understand the human resource practices of the company.
To understand the company problems and recommendations.

Methodology of the study


To prepare this report the main emphasis has been given on the primary data. With the
primary data the following are the methodology of the study:

Primary data has been collected from the company with the help of a well-
structured questionnaire.
Data available in the company web site have also been used to prepare the report.
Not only the structured questionnaire but also personal contact, observations by
visiting has been used to collect data.

Limitations of the study
Though I have collected a lot of information about Universal Jeans Ltd through personal
conduct and secondary data from internet for my report, it has some limitation such as:
Since, our visiting industry is a newly established private limited company so it
has not prepared its annual reports.
Financial data do not disclose for maintain secrecy so few financial data collected.
The study has been constrained by inadequate data and relevant studies.
There is no accessibility to all data sources.
Data are not updated timely and thus exact data might not be gathered.
Lack of proper explanation of records and documents
Time constraint also is an obstacles to prepare and review the paper
However, with these limitations, which could not be avoided, an attempt has been made
to make a comprehensive brief evaluation on the Universal Jeans Ltd.

INTRODUCTION

Today garments industry in Bangladesh is the key industry. Key role played by garments
industry to earn foreign currency, enhance export performance and creating employment
opportunity in Bangladesh. Export and Import is very important for any countries
economic independence. In our country development, export is playing vital role. The
Garment Sector is playing dual role in our economy. Day to day our garment industry
capture foreign market and lead to top industry sector in Bangladesh. Labor are the key
factor of this industry. Most of the labor is uneducated, unskilled. So if to enhance
production performance of labor, arrange training program regularly and to sufficient
salary and other benefit for their well living. Backward linkage industry, bonded
warehouse facility, garments village must be established for smooth export This is the

appropriate time for solve problem and capture foreign market otherwise we cannot
increase our market share for readymade garments. This paper is prepared on
UNIVERSAL JEANS LIMITED, which is one of the largest locally invested garments
under PACIFIC GROUP. In this report, I will show the business operation of that is
followed by UNIVERSAL JEANS LIMITED

BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD
In CEPZ area UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD is a renowned garments industry. NZN and
DIAMOND FASHION WEAR LTD is the parent organization of UNIVERSAL JEANS
LTD.NZN and DIAMOND FASHION WEAR LTD established in 1984.In 1994
PACIFIC JEANS LTD established with modern facilities and updated technology.
Entered EPZ AREA IN 1994. Four industries under NZN and DIAMOND FASHION
WEAR LTD.

UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD produces jeans, causal wear, and exported foreign market. It
is a name of Quality Jeans and Casual Wears line in home and abroad. It is a 100% export
oriented garments manufacturing industry. In CEPZ area, It is a C type export oriented
readymade garments industry. C type means that it is owned by a Bangladeshi citizen
according to BEPZA act/rules and regulations i.e. 100% local investment. It has started
its commercial production from April 2008. It is a sister concern of the Pacific Group
which has started its operation since 1984.

It is located in Chittagong Export Processing Zone known as CEPZ, Bangladesh. Md.


Nasir Uddin is the Managing Director of this company. He has the vast marketing
experience and for exploring the export business he had the opportunity to travel all over
the world and established a good business relationship with the overseas buyers.

MANAGEMENT

Generally, in garment industry sound quality management needed for achieve big
business success. It must be needed for big garments like UNIVERSAL JEANS
LIMITED because huge number of worker worked, big production line, social
responsibility etc. It follows line and staff management style for managing the
organization. There is a managing committee named Board of Directors, which acts as
the top most controller of the organization. There are 11 departments in Universal Jeans
and three levels of management.

Planning is very important for any organization. It is thought that a proper plan is half
completion of the task. So at the time of preparing plan UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD takes
all type of step to prepare an effective plan.
UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD mainly takes Short term and Long term Plan. Sometimes they
takes Plan as per requirement.

Decision making
The success or failure of an Organization depends on appropriate decision making. In
UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD the location of decision making is on the top level. The
Strategic Decision are taken by the top level manager. Sometimes Critical Decision are
taken through consulting with their parent organization PACIFIC JEANS
LTD.UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD follow participative decision making. They allow
workers representative in the managing committee for decision making. Worker

Raw Material Collection
UNIVERSAL JEALS LTD collect raw material from local and foreign country
source.10% of raw material collected from local source and 90% raw material collect
imported from foreign country. Imports raw material from China, Hong Kong, Korea,
Taiwan, Indonesia, India and Pakistan.

Fabric Warehouse
Collected raw material store in warehouse. when fabrics store in warehouse, check
quality of fabrics. To use tally software in purpose of ensure accurate quantity, quality of
products, ensure fabric in and out summary. This software buying from USA.

CAD Department
CAD department is responsible for Digital design of the product. The design, which is
provided by the buyer, they design and sometimes they recommend the buyer about the
design of the product. The design is painted on the paper and then sends to cutting
department. Main objectives of CAD Department is to reduce wastage of fabric. The

I.E. (Industrial Engineering)
This department is responsible for the production distribution planning. Through work-
study they set their production target. We know that for production oriented organization
it is very important to set a production target to meet the buyer deadline and for timely
shipment. Because the reputation of an organization depend on timely shipment. And this
department is very much concern about this. They set production target for every level of
production.IE department successfully performing their activity. The structure is given

Cutting
CAD department design the fabric according to buyer needs. Cutting department collect
design paper and set on the fabrics and then the fabrics is cutting according to the design.
Cutting is done in two way, Manually or Automatically. In cutting UNIVERSAL JEANS
LTD has a distinctive feature of using Automatic Cutting Machine(Auto Cutter). In
automatic cutting machine 70-80 fabrics or 2inch layer can be cut simultaneously. Here
first the design is set in the software of the cutting machine. Here no waste of fabrics that
means there is 0% waste. In manual system worker wear metal gloves to ensure safety for
worker. In cutting there is 120 machine is available.

Sewing
Completion cutting stage, sewing stage started. In sewing section, flow of natural air in
entering area. Before sewing check ID, piece no, line no, name of buyer etc attach in
fabrics. Cut fabrics are sewed through manually or automatically. The machine used for
sewing is imported. These machines are imported from ITALY AND JAPAN. In sewing
there is 3167 machine. The performance of programmable or automated machine is
higher than the manual.

Washing
It is the third step of production. There are three way of washing Dry Process, Wet
Process and chemical process. According to the buyer instruction Dry, Wet or chemical
Process is used. Sometime product washed in Dry process and then send for Wet process
all done according to buyer instruction. Washing machine has three standards.

In testing stage, test the product quality. In testing stage three types of test will be done

Finishing
This is the last step of production. In finishing department to ensure measurement of
fabrics, check button, inspection of fabrics if defects arises. In finishing department, have
separated five division in according to buyer requirements and every stage to check
quality control. Here first inspection is done if any defect is in the product or not .Here all
the defects are found out and corrective measure is taken if correction is not possible then
the product rejected. After inspection the product is go through the metal detector
machine to find if any small metal stay in the product. After inspection the product the
product are ready to pack. All the inspected product are bring in the assortment table and
in the assortment table there is a list of the measurement of the product and according to
the measurement the list is attached with the product. Then the product are packed and
sealed. After the full completion, the packets are stored in the warehouse. At the time of
shipment the product is delivered from the warehouse.

the times, the company get the order from world reputed branded products.

Marketing Problem:
Because UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd is a private organization. Although it is worldwide
experience, skilled management and rich compensation policy has played vital role to
minimize some of the problem like worker unrest, absenteeism and administrative etc.

Some problems are:


Sometimes govt. rules and regulation restrict UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd normal
processing operation. The govt. of Bangladesh always keeps close eyes on its activities.
For changing prices, new plant installation, raw materials, and procurement etc. the
company has to seek necessary permission from the govt. obviously the govt. cannot
always meet its expectation.

Marketing is the main elements of garments industry. UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd is an


export-import oriented garments company so marketing is the main key factor of this
company. It produces mainly jeans pants & trousers. UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd.
attaches much importance to its marketing tasks for which the Managing Director
himself takes personal interest. UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd. to follow marketing
philosophy is Marketing concept(emphasis on customer satisfaction). The marketing
department is responsible for sales, distribution, market research and handling
marketing of individual products.

Target Market:
In UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd, there target market is especially for foreign market. They
are marketing their products to USA, European countries, Japan. Mostly in Europe.

UNIVERSAL JEANS have single product line. Their product they use the Buyers Brand
they dont have their own brand. The main feature of product they emphasize more is

Political instability is another serious operational concern for UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd.
Particularly we have to see that Bangladesh witnessed frequently changes in govt.
policies and regulations.

Finance Department

Finance is the blood of any organization. The financial management is the custodian of
the finance of the organization. The department keeps all records of the payment and
earnings, operating companys account with the bank, arrange funds as per requirement
and deals with income tax for the tax matter of the company. This department is
responsible for maintaining proper account of the companys property and maintaining
liaison with the owner for the financial matters regularly. The key elements of financial
management of UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd. Are discussed below:

Capital and Capital Structure:


The main source of capital is the directors investment in the company. The capital
structure normally follow paid up capital. At the time of starting this factory they have
130 core and now its present capital is about 150 core. But in my practical findings, the
company does not provide any type of financial statement due to their business secrecy.
Market Share:
UNIVERSAL JEANS Ltd. does not enter share market. Therefore the company has no
market share. It is a private limited business entity.

Short term and Long term Financing:


Most of the firm use short term financing to meet temporarily short falls, while
permanent capital (long term debt and equity) is used to meet long-term capital
requirement. There are four basic source of short term financing.

Long term finance provide by directors and banks. The company has no problems of
internal financing.

Especially in garments sector human resource is the essential element for success
business. Garments sector highly labor intensive based. So human resource department is
essential for managing human performance. To manage this resource UNIVERSAL
JEANS LTD has separate HRM Department. The staffs of HRM are successfully
performing their duty. The staffs are trying to implement the HR knowledge in work
force. They act as a guardian of the worker.

Undertaking training programs for skill development.

Salary Administration
Salary is the main motivational factor of garments industry most of the garments industry
do not paid appropriate salary in due time. Salary is the reward that paid by the employer
to the employee for performing his assign duty. UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD has a salary
structure and they follow this structure at the time of paying salary. In according to
position requirement setting the basic pay. According to this structure, the salary varies
employee to employee based on skill. The variation in salary occurs due to some factor.
When employee terminated, organization will give 120 days basic pay.

1995-1996.And the in house development started in 2000.From the start of in house
development they have developed 27-28 software. Their scope is wide spread. Their
software is helping in every part of operation. Some software were imported from abroad.
But most of the software developed by themselves. They develop software according to
the requirement of the concerned people. But the requirement must need to match with
the company policy. If any requirement doesnt match with the company policy then they
inform it to the director sometime suggest changing the requirement so that the software
can match with company policy. The scope of IT is very large. The two important
software developed by them is EXPORT AND IMPORT, PAY ROLL Software. This two
software is widely used. In future they have a plan of making own ERP solution software.

Universal Jeans Ltd is 100% export oriented industry located in CEPZ area. If any
company establish in CPEZ area, gain some extra facility and this facility provided by
BEPZA authority. However UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD enjoy some extra facility but
when visiting UNIVERSAL JEANS LTD purpose of industrial tour. I noticed some
limitations of Universal Jeans Ltd some of them are given below:
For smooth production, do not have any power plant.
Sewing capacity is more than washing and finishing capacity
The organization does not have adequate promotional programs for its product.
There is no child care center for female workers.
There is no provident fund for workers.
The organization does not maintain any educational standard for workers.
It does not provide educational facility to its workers
There is no get together program to improve the relationship between the
Management & workers. Customer service and sales center are not so improved.

Give suggestion to improve performance and establish well rewnound brand. These

To improve washing capacity match with sewing capacity.

conscious about all concern people. They have separate Compliance, HR and corporate
social responsibility department. They are very much quality sensitive. They produces
product according buyer requirement. Every stage of production process must be
ensuring quality check. The organization is maintaining a high quality work environment
in accordance with the labor Act of Bangladesh. Workers get adequate wages and they get
their wages timely. So the workers are satisfied and there is no industrial dispute or labor
unrest in this company operation history. There is no doubt that Universal Jeans has
