3. Deployment Software
There are different application deployment software in the market. WDS (Windows
Deployment Services), Smart Deploy and Acronis Snap Deploy are the common ones.
WDS enables you to deploy Windows operating systems over the network, which means that
you do not have to install each operating system directly from a CD or DVD.
Benefits of Windows Deployment Services:
Allows network-based installation of Windows operating systems, which reduces the
complexity and cost when compared to manual installations.
Supports deploying images for mixed environments including Windows 7and
Windows Server 2008 R2 through Windows 8.1and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Uses standard Windows Setup technologies including Windows Pre installation
Environment (Windows PE), .wim files, and image-based setup.
Transmits data and images by using multicast functionality.
Allows you to create images of a reference computer using the Image Capture Wizard,
which is an alternative to the ImageX tool.
Allows you to add driver packages to the server and configure them to be deployed to
client computers along with the install image.

Smart Deploy images to remote offices or computer labs over your existing network with
Smart Deploy. Create an answer file using our Answer File Wizard for a completely
unattended, remote installation initiated from your Smart Deploy IT admin console. Smart
Deploy handles driver challenges by providing model-specific driver packages, called
Platform Packs. In this patented approach, only the precise drivers and software-specific
settings required for a particular device are injected at deployment time. This approach allows
the fastest, most reliable image deployment and highest endpoint performance.

Acronis Snap Deploy is ideal for rapid bare-metal initial deployments to a large number of
workstations and servers, and an effortless on-going deployment to the same hardware,
Acronis Snap Deploy lets you provision hundreds of systems as fast as you can provision
one. Powered by the Acronis Any Data Engine, award-winning disk imaging technology lets
you create an exact disk image of any standard configuration you choose including the
operating system, configuration, files, and all applications and simultaneously deploy the

image to multiple machines in one easy step. Acronis Snap Deploy will also
automatically manage machine-specific configurations.
KEY FEATURES
Ease of use - A simple and intuitive user interface saves time and reduces errors.
Deploy multiple operating systems - Acronis Snap Deploy supports
Windows Desktop PCs, Laptops, Servers, and Linux.
High-speed dispatch - rapidly deploy a single image to multiple machines via unicast
or multicast from central management console
Flexible deployment options - leverage manual, automatic, user-initiated, and
scheduled deployment modes. You can deploy a standalone image even if your system
is not on a network.
Deploy to live machines start deployment to live Windows machines and avoid
manual booting of each individual machine from network or CDs.
Deploy anywhere provision the same image to dissimilar hardware, even to
different machines simultaneously, with Acronis Universal Deploy.
Machine-specific configurations - assign individual settings to each machine for
tailored configuration. Monitor the status and pre-configure new machines, identified
by MAC address.
Flexible licensing select suitable option from per-deployment, per-machine, and the
site license

4. Technical Specification and Licensing Requirements

WDS
WDS supports unicast and also multicast transmissions. Unicast transmits a separate image to
each individual client, while multicast transmits a single image which is received by all
clients configured to receive it. So, by using multicast we can send one image over the
network to the multiple computers. This way we save some bandwidth on our network. WDS
also supports scheduled casting. By using a schedule we can transfer images at a certain time
or after a certain number of computers have contacted the WDS server, or both. This way we
can deploy our images off peak times. Answer files must be used for unattended installations.
We can configure our WDS server to respond to clients in three different ways:
Not Respond we can enable this if we dont want our WDS to respond to any client
requests.
Respond to Known for this we have to have Active Directory (AD) available. All
computers in AD (members of the domain) will be able to contact WDS. This way we
can prevent unknown computers from accessing WDS. For computers that are not
members of AD, and on which we want to install our image, we can use Pre-staging.
By pre-staging our computer, we pre-create the computer account in AD with the
proper names. When the pre-staged computer contacts WDS, it will supply it its
Page 3 of 31
existing computer name and in that way the WDS server will allow the imaging
process.
Respond to All any computer that requests image from WDS will receive the image.
Technical Requirements of WDS:
AD DS
DHCP
DNS
NTFS Volume
Credentials

Smart Deploy
Smart deploy licenses start from minimum 50 clients. There are different options but they all
yearly submission bases. Basic option cost $23 per client which includes 1ticket/month and
12 hour response time. On the other hand, Premium option cost $28 per client which includes
5 ticket/month and 4 hour response time.
Platform Packs: Driver headaches, solved. These handy driver packages are created by the
Smart Deploy technicians and contain all of the necessary drivers to successfully deploy to a
target device. Each pack is unique to its specific endpoint by make and model, physical or
virtual, and only includes the drivers needed for that device. We are constantly creating new
packages, increasing our library to include over 700 business class devices. This approach to
driver management is a big time-saver when it comes to pc deployment, and is one reason
customers find them so helpful.
Single Image Management: One image works perfect on everything. The Smart Deploy
approach to image management makes it stand out from many other imaging solutions. Spice
heads found that logically separating hardware and software information allows for more
flexibility in relation to image deployment, and for their organization. Having the capability
to deploy one image to multiple devices while keeping the image library minimal and current
is one of the main reasons customers love Smart Deploy.

Acronis Snap Deploy

Acronis Snap Deploy 5 licensing is based on the number of deployed and/or managed
computers. License types are different in terms of the operating system to deploy and in terms
of number of allowed deployments. In terms of the operating system you can deploy, you can
have a workstation or server license:
A server license allows to deploy a server operating system
A workstation license enables deploying of a workstation operating system. A
workstation license is also used if Acronis Snap Deploy 5 cannot identify the type of
operating system.

7. Security Requirements and Licensing

WDS includes a security component, allowing you to restrict who can receive images. As a
reminder, users must have a domain account to be able to access install images on WDS. If
users can't log in during the Windows PE stage, WDS won't provide access to any install
images. We can control who can receive specific images by modifying the permissions of the
images or by placing images in image groups and modifying the permissions of the groups.
Image groups and images are assigned standard NTFS permissions through WDS. Any
permission assigned to an image group is inherited by all the images within the group. By
default, each image and image group assigns permissions to the Authenticated Users group.
