STATEMENT OF A PROBLEM

AutoCad software offers the quality of the designs , It presents the clarity of the

documentation , It is easier to apply the new ideas , It can be more accurate than

hand-drawn designs , It reduces the human error , You can save and edit the ideas ,

And it makes it easier and cheaper to modify your design .

AutoCad software reduced the design timescales , Reuse of the designs , The

drawing errors can be corrected easily , The drawings can be sent/received via email

in seconds , And AutoCad software offers rapid prototyping .

AutoCad software helps the designer to automatically check if the design is within

the specification , It enables the clients to view the designs at an earlier stage in the

design process , And it helps the clients to check the progress of functional and

semi-functional prototypes .

But the common problems are AutoCad software is not so much suited for 3D as it

has fewer options , It can not be used in the complex designs , If you are into the

heavy assembly work dont rely on this software , It can not be used in Complex

Programming , The large amount of memory and speed is required , Training and

equipments are very costly .

AutoCad software has expansive start up costs ( the hardware , the software , and

training ) , It can be very expensive , so , the initial costs are high , There are free

software packages though , The people need to be trained how to use the software

that also adds to the costs , And it requires a PC .

AutoCad software needs the time & the cost of implementing the system , It needs

time & cost of training the people to use it , so , It is very expensive in training , It

needs the time & the cost of migrating legacy drawings into AutoCAD format .

AutoCad software consumes large amounts of the computer processing power , It

requires high-quality computer hardware that can be costly , It requires the advanced

manufacturing devices which are very expensive , It is not easy for first-time users to

learn the software , In addition to the cost of training personnel .

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

In our olden days, engineers, designers and draughtsmen were struggling to

produce and submit engineering drawings in their scheduled times. It was mainly

due to tremendous efforts they had taken to produce both new drawings or

edited/updated drawings.

Every lines, shapes, measurements, scaling of the drawings - all made them

headache to the design / drafting field. All these difficulties and pressures over-

ridden by Computer Aided Design Drafting (CAD Drafting) technology. Here we look

into brief comparison between CAD Drafting over Manual drafting.

In the architecture world, there are a handful of persistent debates that arise

time and time again: the challenges of being a student in the field of architecture is

one of them, for example; the problems of a culture of long hours and hard work is

another. But one of the most enduring arguments in architecture - especially in the

academic sphere - is the battle between hand drawing and computer aided design.

Both schools have their famous proponents.

Drafting is an important aspect of any function involving construction and

manufacture. Drafters prepare technical drawings and plans that are used by

production and construction workers to build everything from helicopters and

skyscrapers to everyday items like food packing materials and mobile phones.
Drafters' drawings provide detailed visual guidelines on constructing a part or a

structure. Drafters may take inputs like specifications and calculation from engineers

and architects to produce technically accurate drawings.

Almost all seemed to believe that CAD and hand drawing could perfectly

coexist, as most seemed to feel that sketching was an ideal tool for forming ideas

and design software was more suited to the precision and clarity that is required at

the later stages of the project. It is worth noting, however, that almost nobody who

expressed this opinion addressed the topic of hand-drawn technical drawings - which

perhaps leads us to infer that when it comes to technical drawings, the computer has

well and truly won.

But of course the role of drawing in formulating ideas is not the only topic to debate.

When it comes to the finer points.

AutoCAD is used across a wide range of industries, by architects, project

managers, engineers, graphic designers, and many other professionals. It was

supported by 750 training centers worldwide in 1994.

CAD software is being used on large scale basis by a number of engineering

professionals and firms for various applications. The most common application of

CAD software is designing and drafting.

The next important part after designing is making the drawings. With CAD

software better and standardized drawings can be made easily. The CAD software

helps in better documentation of the design, fewer drawing errors, and greater

legibility.
It is graphical representation of physical objects and their relationship.the ability to

read drawing is the most important requirement of all technical people in engineering

profession.

In the basic engineering drawing we mainly discuss about the geometrical drawing ,

it is the art of representation of objects on a drawing sheet and is the foundation of

all engineering drawing...

IMAGINATION is very important while studying engineering drawing.

All drawing tools are electronic.

When constructing a full size set-out you can see straight away any shapes, sizes

and angles.

Absolute accuracy can be maintained.

The computer keeps a record of all dimensions in the drawing.

Editing processes include the ability to copy, move, rotate, mirror and erase drawing

parts.

Drawing storage is on a hard drive, memory stick, CD, DVD or floppy disk rather

than in a drawing folio.

Hard copies can be produced in colour and to a high professional standard.

The drawings can be reproduced as often and as quickly as you want.

Can link to Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) machinery.

Disadvantages
Manual method

Computer aided method

For large drawings you need a great deal of space to set it out.

There are still some shapes that are difficult to draw using CAD software.

Doesn't link to Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) devices.

Preferably the computer equipment should be in a climate controlled, dust-proof

environment.

The time that it takes to reproduce / redraw the drawing in comparison to a CAD

drawing.

The cost of purchasing and replacement cost of the equipment is expensive

compared to equipment used to draw manually.
