6. RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the engineering properties defined in para 5, the safe bearing capacity for different
foundation sizes and corresponding settlements; pile capacity is determined and is reported
in following sections.
The typical Calculations for determining the Safe Bearing Capacity and Pile Axial Capacity are
given in para 7.0.

7. Typical Calculations

The typical for determining Safe Bearing Capacity and Pile Axial Capacity are given below.

7.1 Safe Bearing Capacity

1 Basic Data
Location LOT 101 / Group 1
Bhaupur Parallel Section
Chainage: 1140 - 1109
Layer No 1
Description Very Stiff Silty Clay
Depth (From - To) 0.00 - 4.90 m
Average Field 'N' value 28
Cohesion, c 140 kN/m
Friction Angle, 0.00 Deg
Density, 21.00 kN/m
Ground Water Table 5.60 m BEGL

2 Determine Ultimate Bearing Capacity

As per IS 6403, the ultimate bearing capacity for soil can be claculated as -
qult = [ c Nc sc dc ic ] + [ q (Nq-1) sq dq iq ] + [ 0.5 B N s d i Rw] (T/m)

Where,
qult : Ultimate bearing capacity based on shear strength parameters of soil
B : Width of footing (or least dimension) in (m) = 2.00 m
L : Length of footing in (m), if Footing is rectangular type = 13.50 m
D : Depth of footing below ground level in (m) = 1.00 m
: Density of soil (T/m) = 2.10 T/m
c : Cohesion of soil (T/m) = 14.00 T/m
: Angle of Friction of soil (Deg) = 0.00 Deg
q : Effective surcharge at base level of footing in (T/m)
Nc , Nq, N : Bearing Capacity Factors depends on c & of soil
sc , sq, s : Shape Factors
dc , dq, d : Depth Factors
ic , iq, i : Inclination Factors
Rw : Correction for water table
: Inclination of load to the vertical (Deg) = 0.00 Deg

Now, consider
Soil Type C Soil
Shape of footing Rectangular

N = tan [ 45 + /2] = = 1.00

Nc = (Nq - 1) cot = = 5.14
( tan )
Nq = tan [ /4 + /2] e = = 0.00
N = 2 * (Nq + 1) tan = = 0.00

STUP Consultants P.Ltd By: PSB Sheet No: 35

sc = = 1.03
sq = = 1.03
s = = 0.94

dc = = 1.28
dq = = 1.00
d = = 1.00

ic = = 1.00
iq = = 1.00
i = = 0.00

Rw = = 1.00

q= 'D= = 1.10 T/m

[ c Nc sc dc ic ] = = 95.05 T/m
[ q (Nq-1) sq dq iq ] = = 0.00 T/m
[ 0.5 Bg Ng sg dg ig Rw] = = 0.00 T/m

qult = 95.05 + 0.00 + 0.00

qult = 95.05 T/m

3 Determine Safe Bearing Capacity

Consider Factor of Safety = FOS = 2.50

Hence,
Safe Bearing Capacity = qs = qult / FOS = 95.05 / 2.50 = 38.02 T/m

say, Safe Bearing Capacity as 38.00 T/m at 1 m Depth BEGL
