Design and Construction of Civil, structures and Track Works for Double Line Railway
involving formation, track works, bridges, structures, buildings including testing and
commissioning on Design-Build lump sum basis for Bhaupur Khurja section of Eastern
Dedicated Freight Corridor
1. Introduction
The work on eastern section of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) between Khurja and
Bhaupur is to be constructed as an electrified double track railway capable of operating at a
maximum train speed of 100 km/h.
The report covers the design basis for the geotechnical aspects of design of foundations for
structures. This document highlights the general requirements, design methods, codes and
standards used in design.
2. Design Principle
The foundations shall be designed as per the TOR as agreed upon between DFCCIL and TATA
Projects Ltd and Aldesa JV and as per the guidelines given in Indian Railway Standard Code of
Practice for the Design of Sub-Structures and foundations of Bridges and Manual on the
Design and Construction of Well and Pile Foundations.
In general, the type of foundation shall be as below
Major Bridges / RFO / Major RUBs Bored Cast-in-situ Piles of diameter 1000 mm
(PSC Box Girder or Steel Bridges) or 1200 mm
Minor Bridges / Minor RUBs Raft Foundation
(Box Type Structures)
3. Design Method
Based on the RFP data the sub-surface layers are identified and the details of engineering
properties of layer; ground water table etc is given for different sections in para 5.0.
The design parameters shall be referred as per para 5.0.
3.2 Analysis
As per cl 5.1.2 of IS 6403, the ultimate bearing capacity for c- soil shall be calculated as -

qult : Ultimate bearing capacity based on shear strength parameters of soil
B : Width of footing (or least dimension) in (m)
L : Length of footing in (m), if Footing is rectangular type
D : Depth of footing below ground level in (m)
: Submerged Density of soil (T/m)
c : Cohesion of soil (T/m), as per test data
= qu/2 and qu = 10 12 N kN/m as per Section 3-8 of Foundation Analysis and
Design by J E Bowles to be adopted in absence of test results.
N : corrected SPT value. Corrections of SPT to be carried out as per IS: 2131
: Angle of Friction of soil (Deg) as per Fig 1 of IS: 6403 based on corrected N value;
restrict to 36 deg.
q : Effective surcharge at base level of footing in (T/m)

The allowable bearing capacity shall be minimum of

1. Net ultimate bearing capacity as determined above divided by factor of safety 2.5 (as
per 706.3.1.1 of IRC 78-2000); and
2. the net soil pressure that can be imposed on the base without the settlement
exceeding the permissible value of 75 mm
Depending on the type of soil the appropriate terms related to cohesion and friction angle
shall be considered
Pile shall be designed as Bored Cast-in-situ Piles as per IS 2911 Part 1 Sec 2 2010.
3.2.2.1 Piles in Soil with cohesion and friction angle
In stratified Soil / c- soil the ultimate load capacity of pile shall be determined by calculating
the skin friction and end bearing in different strata by using the appropriate equations given
in 3.2.2.2 and 3.2.2.3.
The safe load capacity of pile shall be the ultimate load capacity of pile divided by the factor
of safety as 3.0 as per the IRS code for Pile foundations.
However, this capacity derived from the soil properties shall be compared with the structural
capacity and the minimum shall be considered as Design Pile Capacity.
3.2.2.2 Piles in Cohesionless Soil
The ultimate load bearing capacity of single pile in cohesionless soil shall be calculated as

Ki : Coefficient of earth pressure applicable for the ith Layer
: For Piles in loose to dense sand with varying between 30 to 40 Ki shall be in the
range of 1.0 to 1.5.
PDi : Effective overburden pressure for the ith layer in kN/m
i : Angle of wall friction between pile and soil for the ith layer
: Shall be considered equal to friction angle of soil around pile stem
Asi : Surface area of Pile in ith layer in m

3.2.2.4 Lateral Capacity of Piles
The deflection of the pile due to lateral load shall be determined as per Reese and Matlock
method. The safe lateral resistance of single pile shall correspond to deflection at scour level
not greater than 1.0 % of pile diameter as per IRC 78 amendment No 6 effective from June
2009.

The evaluation of Liquefaction potential shall be carried out as per Appendix G of IITK-RDSO
guideline.
When the foundation are checked for combinations of loads the allowable bearing pressures
on foundations shall be increased as per 6.7 of IRS code for Pile foundations

5. SOIL PROFILE
Soil Profile for various sectors and zones is classified as per the data provided in RFP and shall
be revised if required depending on the data obtained during detailed investigation.
The engineering properties of the various sectors are described in below sections. In absence
of the test data following guidelines are followed to determine the engineering properties.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the engineering properties defined in para 5, the safe bearing capacity for different
foundation sizes and corresponding settlements; pile capacity is determined and is reported
in following sections.
The typical Calculations for determining the Safe Bearing Capacity and Pile Axial Capacity are
given in para 7.0.
