Description The Flowrite EA 599 Series SQX electronic valve actuator requires a 24 Vac supply
and receives a 0 to 10 Vdc or a 4 to 20 mA control signal to proportionally control a
valve. This actuator is designed to work with Flowrite VF 599 Series Siemens Building
Technologies standard valves with a 3/4-inch (20 mm) stroke.
Application These electronic actuators are designed to be used with Flowrite VF 599 Series valves
and Siemens Building Technologies standard valves with 3/4-inch (20 mm) stroke in
liquid service and steam service applications. They are particularly recommended for
installations requiring quick response and good rangeability.

NOTE: When power is first applied or restored after a power failure, the actuator stem
automatically moves to establish the selected stroke intercept point.
For a Normally Closed or three-way mixing valve (with stem up to close the control
port), the actuator moves to the factory set "0" position. The actuator runs on a pre-
programmed slope until the first time it reaches a mechanical stop at fully open. At
this point, the microprocessor calibrates a new slope determined by the actual
stroke. The slope and intercept now correspond to the actual valve stroke of 0 to 10
Vdc.
For a factory assembled Normally Open valve, the actuator moves to the 1 position.
See Start-Up to confirm this position. The actuator runs on a pre-programmed slope
until the first time it reaches a mechanical stop at fully open. At this point, the
microprocessor calibrates a new slope determined by the actual stroke. The slope
and intercept now correspond to the actual valve stroke of 0 to 10 Vdc. When power
is turned off or in the event of a power failure, the actuator maintains its position.

Speed Control To avoid overheating the stepper motor, the microprocessor will switch from full speed to
step and rest mode (a small step and approximately one-second rest).
Position Indication The actuator position indicated by the position output signal U is calculated by counting
motor steps. For this reason, the actuator runs to the 0 (for NC) or 1 (for NO) position
when the current is switched on to establish the selected intercept point.
After a manual override operation, the position indication may be inaccurate. Command
the actuator to the 0 (for NC) or 1 (for NO) position to reset the intercept value and
recalibrate the position feedback signal.
Manual Operation

S
EA0424R1
Press and turn the manual override knob for manual operation. Clockwise moves the
stem retainer toward 0; counterclockwise moves the stem retainer towards 1.
If a signal is sent to the actuator, while the manual override knob is pressed down, the
stem retainer will not move and the position feedback signal will not be accurate.
Automatic operation The actuator will return to automatic operation when the manual override knob is
released. The position indication may be inaccurate. Command the actuator to the 0 (for
NC) or 1 (for NO) position to reset the intercept value.
The vertical position is the recommended position for mounting. Figure 9 shows the
acceptable mounting positions.
Allow four inches (100 mm) around the sides and back of the actuator and eight inches
(200 mm) above and to the front of the actuator. This service envelope is the minimum
space required to access and service the actuator. See Figure 20 for actuator
dimensions and the recommended service envelope.
Detailed installation instructions for field mounting are shipped with the actuator.

The factory set position of OFF is appropriate for Normally Closed or three-way mixing
valves with stem up to close the control port.
Select the ON position for a Normally Open valve with stem up to open the control port.
Switch 2: Characteristic
Do not change the characteristic switch. It is factory set at OFF. The proper flow
characteristic is designed into the Flowrite 599 series valve.
NOTE: Set the actuator switches as specified. These switches do not reverse the
action from NO to NC or vice versa. The valve body assembly determines the
complete assembly action.
Normally Closed Valve Increasing the control signal moves the stem retainer outward (0 to 1): Valve opens.
Decreasing the control signal moves the stem retainer inward (1 to 0): Valve closes.
Normally Open Valve Increasing the control signal moves the stem retainer outward (0 to 1): Valve closes.
Decreasing the control signal moves the stem retainer inward (1 to 0): Valve opens.
Three Way Valve Increasing the control signal moves the stem retainer outward (0 to 1): Valve opens
between port NC and C.
Decreasing the control signal moves the stem retainer inward (1 to 0): Valve opens
between ports NO and C.
Wiring Do not use auto transformers. Use earth ground isolating step-down Class 2 power
supplies.
The maximum rating for Class 2 step-down transformer is 100 VA. Since the SQX62U
actuator requires 18 VA, one transformer can power a maximum of five actuators.
Operating more than five SQX62U actuators requires additional transformers or separate
100 VA power supplies.

Troubleshooting Check that the wires are connected correctly and attached securely.
If the actuator moves erratically in very small steps, check that it is receiving adequate
power.
