CASE EXAMPLE: ASSIGNMENT 2

(GROUP PRESENTATION) (PO11, CO2)

The case example with a designated topic should be conducted in a group as listed below.
Students are compulsory to present the case example with a report submission.

General: Your assignment should be brief but specifics. Please provide examples and
references. You are asked to avoid any emotional, political and social arguments. Be prepared
to defend your environmental case studies and to do so with qualitative scientific, economic
and/or engineering data.

A. Water Treatment (4 person/group)

Your case study question: Sufficient water supply
for domestic and industrial use is one of the key
infrastructural requirement of a modern city. By
referring to one of the water treatment plant in
Malaysia, discuss the source of water supply, the
process of water treatment before domestic use,
the potential hazardous chemical contamination
and the effect of neglecting water treatment.

B. Renewal Energy (5 person/group)

Your case study question: Modern civilization is a
large energy consumer. Most energy is generated
through polluting sources such as the burning of
fossil fuels like natural gas and oil. This pollution
has been linked to many environmental
challenges, including rising temperatures,
increasing smog level etc. Propose solution in
combating those issues.
Task
1. Identify the renewal source of energy
2. Discuss the renewal energy programmes in
developing countries
3. Propose solution that can be implemented in
Malaysia

C. Global Climate Change (4 person/group)

Global climate change may result in economic
and social impacts that will eventually affect every
person. Describe the variability of climate change
and explain its influence on people, places, and
environments in a country or region that you
 choose. As an environmental engineer, propose
solutions to reduce the problems.

D. Industrial sites (4 person/group)

Your case study question: Choose one major
industry (eg, oil and gas, textile, food processing,
chemical industries and etc) and relate the activity
to the environmental issue. Identify the hazardous
emission/by product from the industry. Propose
solution in combating those issues.
Task
1. Identify type of industrial or major activities
related to the site study.
2. Estimate population at the respective area of
study.
3. Identify the problems related to environment at
the site.
4. Propose possible solution to eliminate/reduce
the problems.

E. Transportation (5 persons/group)
Your case study question: Transportation is one
of the main key infrastructure to the city
development. However, the transportation leads
to environmental problems. Identify those
problems. As an environmental engineer, propose
new solutions to combat the problem and how can
you implement in our society.
