assumethatthedominantreligiousideasofJapanwerepresent,namelyShintoand
perhapsBuddhism.

Kakuwasoneofthosereallygeekykidsyouhearaboutwhowasbuildingsophisticated
physicsexperimentsinhisparentsgarage,winningthehighschoolsciencefair,gettinginto
Harvardasaresult,andbecomingafamoustheoreticalphysicist.1

Asaphysicist,Kakuisfrequentlybumpingupagainstthosebigquestionsinlife:Where
didtheuniversecomefrom?Didsomeonecreateit?Istherepurpose,order,orchaos?In
fact,heciteshisinterestinthosequestionsasthereasonhebecameinterestedin

WhenscientistsusethewordGod,theyusuallymeantheGodofOrder.For
example,oneofthemostimportantrevelationsinEinsteinsearlychildhoodtook
placewhenhereadhisfirstbooksonscience.Heimmediatelyrealizedthatmost
ofwhathehadbeentaughtaboutreligioncouldnotpossiblybetrue.
Throughouthiscareer,however,heclungtothebeliefthatamysterious,divine
Orderexistedintheuniverse.5

Kakusapparentspiritualityrepresentsabitofabreakfrommuchofthescientific
community.Hedoesntseemtothinkthatreligionandsciencecantgetalong.Hesaid:

mankind,whilebrilliantenoughtodevelopscientificprinciplesandtechnologies,isignorant
enoughtoregularlymisusescience.Thisincludesnuclearweapons,nuclearfuel,and
