Summary
Sustainable and net zero building design requires analysis during the early design stages to evaluate the impact
of building orientation, form, window wall ratio, envelope thermal characteristics and HVAC systems. This
course will be a hands-on workshop using industry standard CAD-BIM tools and DOE-2/EnergyPlus energy
simulation tools. The topics covered will include: (i) Energy Literacy & Building Loads, (ii) Climate & Weather
Analysis, (iii) Solar Measurements & Strategies, (iv) Wind & Airflow Strategies, (v) Daylighting Strategies &
Analysis, and (vi)Whole Building Energy Analysis. Attendees will gain knowledge to create DOE-2 and EnergyPlus
models from BIM using Formit360, Revit and Insight 360, quality assurance of energy models and explore the
impact of design parameters on the overall energy performance of design. In addition to design and analysis
strategies, attendees will be introduced to best practices and concepts for existing building modeling,
calibration, efficient building operation and maintenance.
Learning Objectives:
1. Introduction to building performance analysis
2. Energy model creation using BIM tools
3. Parametric analysis and performance evaluation for sustainable design
4. Existing building energy analysis
Grading:
1. Two mini-quizzes and a final quiz Based on online course materials and subjects covered in class (40%)
2. Two individual projects Mass model energy analysis (40%)
3. One group project Design project with net zero energy goal (20%)
