CURRENT WASTE MANAGEMENT
(case: palm oil mill)
SOLID handling LIQUID treatment
- Empty Fruit Bunch current - Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) or
incineration or mulching (no EFB effluent from tapioca industry
treatment) current open lagoons digestion
disadvantages : disadvantages :
- loss of oil in the EFB - methane emission to
- unutilized potentially renewable atmosphere (global warming gas)
energy source - loss of potentially renewable
- Empty fruit bunch energy source
current utilization for boiler - large area required for ponds
disadvantage :
- EFB contains high moisture
(lower calorific value)

Biogas Project in Indonesia
Domestic utilization: Currently there is more
than 13,500 unit of biogas digester are installed
to meet domestic needs (cooking and lighting).
Biogas is produced from animal manure;
Commercial/industry sector: Biogas program is
implemented through the commercial basis. The
biogas unit system is built in a large scale, usually
to generate an electricity. Biogas is produced
from palm oil mill effluent (POME), tapioca
effluent and municipal solid waste.
