Pentecost Sunday
Sunday, June 4, 2017

Today we celebrate Pentecost, the commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon
the Apostles, as described in second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. We are grateful for the many
ways in which the Holy Spirit regularly descends upon the people connected in various ways to St.
Anthony Shrine.

The Shrine is a different place in that in some ways we represent stability, and in other ways we
represent dynamism. Were stable in that there is a sense in which we are always here. The building
itself is open 365 days a year and we have an active sacramental life which carries on through every
liturgical season. We have a religion which is 2,000 years old and a religious order which is 800 years
old. The first Franciscan friar arrived in Boston in 1860.

On the other hand, we do also have elements of dynamism. The friars have a charism of itineracy,
meaning that none as individuals really have any rightful claim to our current assignment or set of
circumstances. The friars also have a charism of responding to the needs of the people as they arise.
This is why we are quick to consider and develop new ministries here at the Shrine. The needs of the
People of God are always the first consideration!

Every summer I am reminded of one crucial way in which we are dynamic. We have good people here
for just one summer. This particular summer we are blest with the presence of Brother Juan de la Cruz
Turcios, OFM. Br. Juan is a solemnly professed friar who is also a seminarian at the Chicago
Theological Union. We also have two terrific interns: Kathryn Chaney from Boston College and Anna
Lenney from the College of Holy Cross. All three are making great contributions to work of the Shrine!
