Example Applications 1

PRECIS
This volume contains documentation on a series of example application problems that have been
solved using FLAC 3D. These example applications demonstrate the various classes of problems to
which FLAC 3D may be applied.*
Table 1 presents a summary of the example applications described in this volume. The table also
identifies the specific FLAC 3D feature that is examined in each problem.
The problems in this volume represent a brief sampling of potential applications for FLAC 3D. We
plan to update this volume on a regular basis and will send new examples as they are prepared. We
also invite users to submit their own examples for inclusion, or inform us of any type of problem
that they would like to see in this volume.

* All problems in this volume, except where noted, were run on a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 computer.

Example applications for the optional features thermal analysis, creep material models and dy-
namic analysis are provided in Section 1 in Thermal Analysis, Section 1 in Creep Material
Models and Section 1 in Dynamic Analysis, respectively. There are additional example applica-
tions for interface elements, structural elements and groundwater analysis in Section 2 in Theory
and Background, Section 1 in Structural Elements and Section 1 in Fluid-Mechanical Interac-
tion, respectively.
