Process Heat Transfer Project
Executive Summary
The project revolves around a natural gas compression system requiring a heat exchanger. The heat
exchanger is to continuously cool a compressed gas stream using the colder gas from the suction
side.
The exchanger is designed with four streams; Streams 1 and 2 are allocated as the shell as the cold
stream and Streams 3 and 4 are assigned as the tube side hot stream. The hot stream of compressed
gas, at 50 C, leaves the distillation column at a rate of 86247 kg/hr and is cooled to 43 C, by
exchange with 86247 kg/hr low pressure suction gas entering at 30 C. A satisfactory pressure drop
of 25 kPa is acceptable and a fouling factor of 0.00018 (W/m 2C)-1 on the hot and cold streams was
permissible.
Iterations were conducted and numerous trials were taken to find the length, diameter, overall heat
transfer coefficient and pressure drop to be within the design constraints. Eventually a suitable
design was chosen that not only satisfied the criteria but also developed an optimum situation. The
discrepancy between the calculated overall heat transfer coefficient and the assumed one is
0.0585%. Lastly a pressure drop of 22.77KPa was examined in the shell side and that of 6.65KPa for
the tube side both of which lies below the required pressure drop of 25kPa.
The TEMA configuration chosen was the AES (see appendix B for a diagram) configuration
accompanied with removable channel and cover, one shell pass and a floating head with back device.
This configuration was chosen over the simpler AEU/BEU design because of the fact that it is easy
and frequent cleaning of the tube bundle. Additionally, the AES configuration is more suitable for
flammable substances such as natural gas especially when methane is in high quantities.
In order to be able to use Kerns method for the analysis, interpolation of data was required to obtain
physical properties of the fluids. Following the procedure, heat transfer rate was calculated (449.72
kW), heat transfer area (94.65 m2), the tube side and shell side heat transfer coefficients are
1532.19W/m2oC and 838.78W/m2oC respectively and the overall transfer coefficient (405.23
W/m2oC). The assumed overall heat coefficient after 15 iterations only had an error of 0.0585% in
comparison to the calculated heat transfer coefficient and the corrected LMTD was calculated to be
11.73oC. The actual surface area (1.1 * calculated surface area) was calculated to be 104.11m 2 (Refer
to Appendix F for iteration calculations and to Appendix E for the physical properties of the fluids) .
One shell was required and with one shell pass and the number of tubes per shell were 870 tubes.
Two tube passes were used and 435 are required per pass. The tube bundle diameter was calculated
to 0.77m and the shell diameter was 0.846m. The length of the heat exchanger was estimated to be
2m long, with a tube and shell clearance of 0.078 with 25% baffle cut, a pitch of 0.029m (1.5 * the
outer diameter) and an outer diameter of 19.05. As shown above, the chosen heat exchanger
configuration fulfils all the restrictions of the design.
Note: The values in the sample calculation are slightly different to the values shown in the excel file
attached in the Appendix E due to the differences in decimal places kept. The Reynolds number
obtained for both shell and tube side were greater than the range of the graph so extrapolation was
used to obtain their friction factor (J f) by obtaining the equation of the graph (see Appendix C&D).

4.0 Conclusion
Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most commonly used type of heat exchanger in process
engineering, due to its versatility for usage in different operating conditions. A shell and tube heat
exchanger has been designed to achieve a specific duty within acceptable parameters set by the
design brief.
The first step involves choosing the configuration of shell and tube heat exchanger AES was chosen
because of its low cost, simple design and adaptability. Iterative calculations were conducted to
ensure that the heat exchanger met all the design criteria and its design was optimised. The
optimum heat exchanger is one shell, two tube passes, 870 tubes, outer tube diameter of 19.05mm,
inner tube diameter of 0.01505, tube thickness of 2mm, tube length of 2000mm and triangular tube
arrangement.
The pressure drops are 6.67KPa and 22.92KPa for the tube and shell side respectively, both of which
are well below the 25 kPa specification limit. This prevents any hazards within the heat exchanger.
The tube-side and shell-side velocities are 4.45m/s and 7.24m/s, both reasonable speeds for the shell
and tube for the chosen dimensions of the heat exchanger. The fouling factors were used within the
Uo equation in order for them to be within the allowable specifications of 0.00018(W/m 2 )-1.
