You have been given a very important CAS opportunity! The PE department
would like you, as mathematicians, to help organise a hockey tournament
which the school will host. They would like to use the Soccer World Cup as a
model for the hockey tournament but are not sure whether this will work or
not. The information the PE department can give you is the following;
20 teams will be participating from different international schools.
Provisional dates for the competition are Thursday 16th Sunday 19th of November
2017.
There are 4 hockey fields available.
Matches can be played from 08:00 till 20:00 each day if necessary.
The maximum number of days the tournament can run for is four but, if possible, the
PE department would prefer if it could be run over three days.
Since the Soccer World Cup is the model that you are to base the tournament on it would be a good
idea if you started by looking at how this competition works!
A Beautiful Game?
1. Given that there are 16 teams in the round of 16, how many teams will go forward to the
quarter-finals 8 teams
semi-finals 4 teams
The final? 2teams
3. Could a single-elimination tournament begin with any number of teams? Explain your answer.
No, I cant be any number because how if it was odd number you cant half it and the equation will go
wrong.
What can you say about the value of n? N must be an even number.
Using algebra describe how to find the number of teams going into each round of the
tournament. 16 teams divided by two.
5. In a single-elimination tournament with 16 teams, how many matches in total will be played in
deciding who the winner is? 15 matches will be played to know who is the winner in single
elimination.
6. If instead of there being 16 teams at the start there were 32 teams, how many matches would now
be played in deciding who the winner is? 31 matches will be played VS each other to know who is the
winner.
7. Describe any patterns you notice in the calculations you have done.
8. By looking at other starting number of teams, investigate possible connections between the number
of starting teams and the number of matches needed in deciding a winner. Can you write a
mathematical rule that describes the connection you found?
Number teams is n

In next years World Cup, before the single-elimination tournament can take place all
the group matches need to be played first to decide who the 16 teams are.
In the 2010 World Cup there are 8 groups (A H), each with 4 teams.
Consider Group A with teams A1, A2, A3 and A4. Each team plays all the other
teams in the group.
6 games would be frolicked in each team. For example, A1 would VS A2, A3, and A4 which would
be VS 3, A2 would VS A3, and A4 which is 2, A3 would VS A4 which is 1 and A4 would have
already VSed everyone which would finishes with a total of 6.
2. If instead of only four teams in each group there were six teams. How many games would be
played altogether with six teams in a group?
Using the same method, you would get 15 games played in total.
3. How many games would be played altogether if there were 8 teams in a group?
Describe any patterns you notice in what you have done this far.
4. Investigate the number of games played for other numbers of teams and record your data in a
table.
The pattern would be that you must add the number less than the team so if it was 8 you would do 7 +
6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 which would be 28.
Matches played= x
Rule is x= (n-1) + (n-2)+(n-3) till you reach one
Consider the data you have collected. Are there any generalizations you can make about the
number of teams in a group and the number of games that need to be played?
Teams Matches
4 6
6 15
8 28
5. Write a mathematical rule which will give you the number of matches played when you
know the number of starting teams in a group - remember to test your rule to see if it works.
6. Starting teams = n
7. Matches played = x
8. Rule: x = (n 1) + (n -2) + (n 3) until you reach 1
It gave me the equivalent answer using the technique when trying to see what each team plays each
other.
Having completed Parts A and B you should now have a much better idea about how to organise the
hockey tournament that the PE department will run in November.
How you think the PE department should organise their hockey tournament?
Once you have decided how you think the tournament should run you will need to
prepare a presentation to the PE department which outlines your plan for the
hockey tournament.
Day 1
A1 will VS A2 at 8 am at filed 1 and A3and A4 will VS each other at 8 am on filed 2 and finishes at
10 am. Then cause A1 and A4 four they won so they get transferred to the next stage and A1Vs A4
and A1 wines again also gets to the next stage.
Now its 10:20 am which B1 and B2 will Vs each other on filed 1 and B3 and B4 will VS each other
on filed 2. Game finishes at 12pm. B2 and B3 won which they got transferred to the next level. B2
and B3 VS each other and B4 is the winner. Now B4 is graduated to the next level.
Time is now 12:20 which another game will start between C1 and C2 on field 1. C3 and C4 will have
to VS each other on field 2 and the game also finishes at 2 pm. C2 and C4 won, now they to play
against each other so they can go to next level. C4 is the winner and gets to the next level.
2:20 is the time the players had their brake and they are ready to go and the game will finish at 4. Now
D1 and D2 will VS against each other on filed 1. D3 and D4 left with chance so now they have VS
each other on filed 2. Winners are from these matches are D1 and D4, they played against each other.
D4 wines
Last and foremost, the time is now 4:20 players had their brake time and they are ready to go. E1 will
VS E2 on filed 1. E3 will also VS E4 at filed 2 and the matches will be finished at 6pm. E2 and E3
won and they must play a game to decide who is team is the winner. E 3 is the winner.
The teams are their injury time which it will go from 1 to 2 hours and it will be the end of our day.
Day two
Welcome again the time is now 8 am the players are ready to beat each other. We have A1 is VS B4
and the match will finish at 10 am. We have B4 team is the winner. Now we B4 is VS C4 and this
match will go from10:20 to 12pm. We have C4 is taking over. Now C4 is VS D4 and this will go
from 12:20 pm to 2 pm. C4 is still the winner.C4 is now VS D4 and match will go from 2:20 to 4 pm.
Sadly D4 takes over and should VS E3. This match will go from 4:20pm to 6pm. E3 team is our
winner for this Tournament.
1. Starting teams = n
2. Matches played = x
3. Rule: x = (n 1) + (n -2) + (n 3) until you reach 1
Part D: Reflection
Having completed the task and made your presentation you now need to reflect on what you have
done. Look at the rubric for Criterion D, this asks you to:
Explain in some detail how you could use your findings from parts A and B to help you
organise the hockey tournament.
Explain in some detail how what you have done in this task could be useful in a real-life
situation
Having completed the task, look back at what you did to consider how appropriate the
methods you used were if you could do it all again would you do it the same way?
So, in this part of assement I got this result because it was a single elimination. So if we got to apply
my plan in real life it will perfect therefore the marches Ive planned go for 3 hours and 1o minitues
brake also the last two hours is injury time were the players been cheeked for any injury. I believe the
plan I have is good because if you realize that in my results I got appropriate results for my plane. I
think the areas I need to improve on is time management.
