that information adding the colors to fill in the voids that were found in the
System, as well as the inclusion of trend colors to create the most

What is the PANTONE for fashion and home color

chooser 3.0?
The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 is a tool for textile,
fashion apparel and home furnishings designers who want to use the PANTONE
for fashion and home colors for digital design, specification and communication
of color.

The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 provides optimized
sRGB and HTML values for 1,925 PANTONE for fashion and home colors which
can be used in design software for textile, fashion apparel and home furnishings.
Now you can easily add PANTONE for fashion and home colors to Adobe
Photoshop and other applications such as QuarkXPress and Macromedia
Freehand, etc. Also included are color swatch libraries that you can use with
Adobe Illustrator. The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0
provides the best possible representation of PANTONE for fashion and home
colors on monitors and eliminates the need to adjust those colors in order to get
them to display properly in your designs and illustrations.

Colors are selected from a scrollable palette of 1,925 PANTONE for fashion and
home colors and provide the best possible representation of PANTONE for
fashion and home colors on a monitor. Any PANTONE Color can be located by
entering its unique identification number. As valuable companion products, there
are fashion and home publications in both paper and fabric formats to suit your
specific needs.

What is new in the PANTONE for fashion and home color

chooser 3.0?
Color picker contains 1,925 PANTONE for fashion and home colors
arranged chromatically
New stock was used for the printing of the paper editions. This is
reflected with revised sRGB values for the PANTONE for fashion and
home paper library. PANTONE Color numbers printed on paper are
now designated with a TPX suffix in place of the TP suffix.
Colors conform to the sRGB specification for monitor displays
Provides sRGB data in 0-100 percent and 0-255
Displays HTML values for each color selected
Adobe Illustrator Swatch Libraries are included so PANTONE for
fashion and home colors can be applied directly from within Adobe
Illustrator
Note: Due to limitations associated with the Mac OS X operating

Installing the Software

Make sure that you have closed all open applications. Insert the PANTONE for
fashion and home color chooser 3.0 CD and the PANTONE for fashion and
home color chooser 3.0 installer should automatically launch. If not, open the CD
and double-click on the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 icon.
Follow the on-screen instructions and select the directory in which you want to
install PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0. When installation is
completed, you will be able to launch the PANTONE for fashion and home color
chooser 3.0 immediately.

Adobe Illustrator users: This CD also includes Adobe Illustrator Swatch

Libraries for the PANTONE for fashion and home colors. For installation
instructions, please see the section of the manual devoted to Adobe Illustrator.

Note: To uninstall the Macintosh version of the software, first you must log out of
the System and then log back in. Then run the Installer for the PANTONE for
fashion and home color chooser 3.0 and select the Uninstall option from the
pop-up menu. This is required in order to remove the files installed at the
operating system-level for the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser
3.0. The User Guide for the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0
should be manually deleted from your hard disk.

Basics
There are two distinctly different implementations for the PANTONE for
fashion and home color chooser 3.0 due to the differences between the
Windows and Macintosh operating systems. However, both the Windows
and the Macintosh OS X versions are integrated directly at the operating
system level. This makes for easy access by any application that provides
direct access to the respective system-level color picker. Also included are
Adobe Illustrator Swatch Libraries to make it easy to apply PANTONE for
fashion and home Colors to the artwork and designs created in this
application.

The PANTONE for fashion and home color system

The PANTONE for fashion and home colors contain the RGB and HTML data for
the industry standard PANTONE for fashion and home color system. These
PANTONE Colors have been specially calibrated for the standard monitor color
space for the World Wide Web and for the Windows/Macintosh operating
systems. This is known as sRGB. Traditionally, operating systems have
supported the display of colors on a monitor by using RGB. However, as RGB
varies between devices, color was not reliably reproduced across different
monitors.

Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and others have developed a standard monitor color

space that is optimized to meet the needs of most users. This color space is
called sRGB. Very simply, sRGB is calibrated RGB that is optimized for the vast
majority of computer monitors, operating systems and browsers. sRGB
specifications use a monitor with a gamma of 2.2 and 6,500 degree Kelvin white
point. sRGB will allow color to be reproduced and displayed in a single, unified
method that provides for viewing consistency from monitor to monitor. Further,
Microsoft has made sRGB the default monitor color space for Windows
98/2000/XP.

Important note about sRGB - The PANTONE for fashion and home color
sRGB values were developed with many variables being taken into
account and are Pantone's official release of RGB values that conform to
the sRGB specification. These colors will display reasonably well on most
color monitors but may not exactly match PANTONE for fashion and home
colors. The PANTONE sRGB values were developed with many variables
being taken into account. Some of them are:
Differences in monitors from one manufacturer to another and
identical monitors by the same manufacturer
Age of monitor
Imperfections in the monitor manufacturing process

The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 for
Windows
The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 for Windows is a
software application that allows users of various fashion, apparel and home
furnishings design software applications to use the PANTONE for fashion and
home colors which have been optimized for monitor viewing as an additional
choice to the Windows system color palette. Once installed, the PANTONE for
fashion and home color chooser 3.0 creates an icon in the system tray (right-
hand side of the Start Menu) that then allows you to choose between the
Windows system color picker and the PANTONE for fashion and home color
system for both cotton (PANTONE f & h cotton) and paper (PANTONE f & h
paper) substrates.

The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 colors are designed to
work in conjunction with your textile, fashion and home decor design applications.
This makes it easy to apply colors to any element of your design. While the
PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 dialog box is open, you may
choose a color, see various types of information about the color selected and use
the color in your application, as discussed in the following sections.

NOTE: The application, PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0, can
be invoked as a stand-alone application by simply double-clicking on the system
tray icon. A color can then be selected and the data copied and pasted into an
application or manually entered using the values defined within the PANTONE
for fashion and home color chooser 3.0. Therefore, if you work with an
application that does not utilize the Windows system-level pickers, there is
always access to the values within the PANTONE for fashion and home color
chooser 3.0.

Selecting colors
There are five ways in which you may do color selection in the PANTONE
for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 for Windows. You can use these

 different methods for either single colors or groups of colors. These are
described below:

1) Use the scroll bar to select a section of the palette - the scroll bar
allows you to move among the available colors in various ways:

a) Scroll box click and drag: You can click on the scroll box and drag it
left or right to view areas of the color palette that are not currently
visible.
b) Scroll arrow buttons: You can click on the arrows at either end of
the scroll bar to move the palette by one column. The direction of
the arrow indicates the direction in which the palette will scroll.
c) Scroll bar shaft: Clicking within the scroll bar shaft moves the scroll
bar by one full screen.

2) Use the rainbow bar to select a section of the palette -

The colored horizontal rainbow can be used to move quickly to the

general area for the color that you want. If necessary, you can use the
horizontal scroll bar to isolate an individual color. The rainbow bar acts
differently from the scroll bar in that it has no navigation arrows at the
ends. Clicking at either end causes the palette to move immediately all
the way to that end. Clicking within the rainbow bar causes the scroll to
go immediately to that position. Clicking and then dragging the mouse
within the rainbow bar acts identically to clicking on the scroll bar and
then dragging it.

3) Click on a color in the picker - clicking on any color in the current

viewable area of the palette selects that color.

4) Select a color in the Find Color text box

in the Find Color

text box, you can type in the PANTONE for fashion and home color
number to go directly to the selected color.

5) Use the default selection - when the PANTONE for fashion and
home color chooser 3.0 is invoked from within an application, the
PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 opens up with a
color selected that is the closest PANTONE for fashion and home color
to the one that was currently selected in the application from which the
color picker was launched. If you then double-click on that color or click
on the OK button, the PANTONE for fashion and home color will
become the active color back in the application.

The Swatch - in the upper left corner of the box there is a large
swatch showing the currently selected color and giving its name.
HTML - this box shows the value of the current color as a 6-
character string of hexadecimal digits in the form RRGGBB.
RGB (0 to 100%) - this box shows the value of the current color as
percentages of Red, Green and Blue.
RGB (0 to 255) - this box shows the value of the current color as
the one-byte (0 to 255) value for Red, Green and Blue.
New and Original - in the lower part of the box to the left of middle
are two color boxes showing the Original and New colors. The
Original color is the one that had been selected by whatever
mechanism was dealing with color before the PANTONE for
fashion and home color chooser 3.0 started, and the new color is
whatever color is currently selected in the PANTONE for fashion
and home color chooser 3.0.
Color Reference - this text box gives the full name of the currently
selected color.

 Using a Color
Having selected a color within the PANTONE for fashion and home color
chooser 3.0, you use it by either clicking on the OK button at the lower
left of the screen, or double-clicking on the color in the current visible
section of the palette. This will close the PANTONE for fashion and home
color chooser 3.0 window and return you to the application from which you
invoked it, with the selected color being the active one. If you were, for
example, to follow the return from the PANTONE for fashion and home
color chooser 3.0 with a fill operation inside a shape, the selected
PANTONE Color will fill the shape.

If you decide that you do not want to use the PANTONE Color you have
selected after all, just click on the Cancel button and you will be returned
to your application with the selected color being the same one that was
selected prior to invoking the PANTONE for fashion and home color
chooser 3.0.

Using PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 Within
Applications
The following is a brief summary on how to invoke and use the PANTONE
for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 with some of the design
applications currently available.

1) QuarkXPress 5.0 - Open QuarkXPress and create a new document.

To access the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0,
select the EditPreferencesPreferences menu. Only certain items
invoke the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 color
picker, as follows: under GeneralHyperlinks, under
Avenue.QuarkMarker text, and under DisplayMargins, Ruler and
Grids.

2) QuarkXPress 4.0 - Open Quark Press and create a new document. To

access the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0, select
EditPreferencesApplication, then choose Margin, Ruler or Grid.

3) Macromedia FreeHand 10 - In order to use the PANTONE for fashion

and home color chooser 3.0, you must first create a new document
and place an object or image onto it. From the Colors section of the
Tools toolbar, click on the drop-down menu to the right of the Fill Color
icon, , and a color swatch will open up. On this swatch, look for the
multi-colored circular icon, , located on the top right-hand corner,
click on it. This will invoke the PANTONE for fashion and home color
chooser 3.0. Select a color, click OK and the object will be filled with
the selected color.

 4) Adobe Photoshop - In order to use the PANTONE for fashion and
home color chooser 3.0, you must create a new document and place
an object or an image on it. Next, go to EditPreferencesGeneral
and make sure the Color Picker is set to the Windows Color Picker.
From the Tools toolbar, click on either one of the active colors to
launch the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 window.

for Mac OS X (versions 10 and 10.1x)

selection tools which take advantage of the features Apple has built in to the Mac
OS X architecture.

The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0 for OS X is designed to
work with applications where you need to select colors from the PANTONE for
fashion and home color system. This makes it easy to apply PANTONE for
fashion and home colors to the desired objects and design elements.

Using the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0
You can access the PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0
from within applications that access the Mac OS X System Level Picker,
as well as from the System itself. We have described a workflow from
within Adobe Photoshop 7 and Macromedia FreeHand 10 for Mac OS X.
These workflows may or may not be applicable in other applications.

System Level Access

1) Open any folder on the desktop or create a new one.
2) Select 'Show View Options'
from the resulting pop-up
menu. Your folder must be in
icon view in order to use this
function.
3) From the Background heading,
click on the colored square to
bring up the Apple Color
Picker.

 4) From the Apple Color Picker, choose 'Name' from the selection of picker
types.
5) From the pop-up menu, select PANTONE f & h - cotton or PANTONE f & h -
paper.

6) Using the slider bar, scroll to preview the PANTONE for fashion and
home Colors. Click on the desired color to select and use it. Then click
the 'OK' button.

The PANTONE for fashion and home color chooser 3.0

for Mac OS X (version 10.2 and higher)
Changes made by Apple to Mac OS X with the introduction of version 10.2 have
altered the system-level Apple Color Picker interface. This has resulted in
modifications to the way you locate the PANTONE for fashion and home colors
within the Apple Color Picker. Please note the following changes only apply for
use within Mac OS X, version 10.2 and higher.

1) Access the MAC OS X System Level Color Picker as described in the

System Level Access section on page 10 of this user manual.

 2) To locate the PANTONE fashion and home color libraries, you must now
select Color Palettes.

3) Using the Palette pop-up menu, select the desired PANTONE for fashion
and home color library you wish to use.

4) The slider bar will let you scroll through the selected PANTONE for
fashion and home color library to locate the color you wish to select or use
the Find function located in the Color pop-up menu to easily locate a
specific PANTONE for fashion and home color.

 5) Click on the desired color to select it. Then click the 'OK' button.

Application Access via Adobe Photoshop 7

1) Launch Adobe Photoshop 7 within Mac OS X.
2) Select Adobe Photoshop from applications main menu bar.
3) Select PreferencesGeneral and make sure the Color Picker is set to the
Apple Color Picker.
4) From the Apple Color Picker, choose 'Name' from the selection of picker
types.
5) From the pop-up menu, select PANTONE f & h cotton or
PANTONE f & h paper.

6) Using the slider bar, scroll to preview the PANTONE for fashion and home
colors. Click on the desired color to select it and use it within Adobe
Photoshop. Then click the 'OK' button.

 1) Launch FreeHand 10 within Mac OS X.
2) If the Color Mixer is not displayed, then display it by choosing
Window from the menu.
3) From the Window pop-up
menu, choose Panels and
then Color Mixer.
4) In the Color Mixer dialog
box, click on the button with a
picture of a multi-colored
apple. This displays the Apple
Color Picker.
5) From the Apple Color
Picker, choose 'Name'
from the selection of picker
types.
6) From the pop-up menu, select PANTONE f & h cotton or
PANTONE f & h paper.
7) Using the slider bar, scroll to preview the PANTONE for fashion and
home colors, click on the desired color to select it and use it within
FreeHand. Then click the 'OK' button.

PANTONE for fashion and home Swatch Libraries for Adobe
Illustrator
This section will describe how to utilize the PANTONE for fashion and home
color system libraries in Adobe Illustrator. Please note that these libraries can be
used in Adobe Illustrator version 8.x and later.

Note: These instructions apply for both Macintosh and Windows versions of
Adobe Illustrator.

The version-specific Adobe Illustrator Swatch Library files that are

provided for the PANTONE for fashion and home Color System:
PANTONE f & h-cotton for 8 and 9 - for use in Adobe Illustrator versions 8
and 9.
PANTONE f & h-paper for 8 and 9 - for use in Adobe Illustrator versions 8
and 9.
PANTONE f & h-cotton for 10 - for use in Adobe Illustrator version 10 only.
PANTONE f & h-paper for 10 - for use in Adobe Illustrator version 10 only.

Using the colors in an Adobe Illustrator document.

The instructions for using the libraries are identical for each library; however, it is
important that you open the appropriate library for your version of Adobe
Illustrator. Failure to do so may import the colors in CMYK color space, which will
distort the color data and render the colors inappropriately on your monitor.

To use the colors in your documents:

1) From the For Adobe Illustrator folder located on the PANTONE for fashion
and home color chooser 3.0 CD, drag the PANTONE for fashion and
home Color System libraries to the Swatch Libraries folder inside of the
Adobe Illustrator folder on your computer's hard drive.
2) Open a new or existing document in RGB color space. It is recommended
that your document be in RGB color space to avoid converting the color
data in the PANTONE for fashion and home Color System libraries.
3) From the Adobe Illustrator Window menu, choose Swatch Libraries. The
PANTONE for fashion and home color system libraries will show as
options.

 4) Select the appropriate library from the list provided. The library will open in
a separate palette, similar to the native PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM
Color Libraries.

5) Add colors to your document palette as needed. You may wish to view the
swatches by name to make color selection easier.

In order to see the PANTONE Color names associated with colors, you MUST
add the PANTONE for fashion and home colors to your Swatches palette before
defining objects with them. Once you do this, clicking on a colored object will
reflect the PANTONE for fashion and home color used from the Swatches
palette.
