Globalization is the idea that our world is becoming a unified

whole with little or no cultural or social conflict. This central idea

of globalization is conducive to the idea of education. For a
student seeking to extend boundaries and break barriers,
globalization provides an opportunity of a lifetime. Globalization
has merits and demerits in economics, business and politics. In
education it has merits for students and educators but there is
also a sense of an unhealthy takeover of education by market
forces. Broadly considered, however, Globalization is freeing the
world of education from limitations.
Globalization Makes Education More International
Globalization has made the world a smaller place. Job opportunities are
open worldwide and the more "international" a student's education, the
greater the possibilities. The purpose of education is to prepare a person
for the world, and globalization ensures that. Unlike Imperialism or
Colonialism, Globalization has positive connotations -- exposing a student
who has had a global education to become a citizen of the world.

The "Commodification" of Education

Institutions of higher learning are increasingly "commodifying" their
programs to address a global audience. This branding and marketing of
education makes learning, a product that can be sold. Attached to this idea
is the aggressive selling policy of advertisers who treat students as
consumers, and education as a buyer's market. Long-distance learning,
tailored MBA programs, evening degrees are examples of how the
increasing effects of globalization has influenced educators into serving
education as a commodity in a labor market.

Characteristics of Globalization

Let us try to redefine the concept in the light of its 10 basic

characteristics:

Globalization is Not a New, Western Concept:

When ancient Indian scriptures mentioned Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam, they had already viewed the world as a
small global village of linked families. When our
grandmother started her stories with Saat samundar
paar, she also meant that we are not alone in this
Universe, and the world is cohabited by others too at far off
places.

Globalization is Basically a Mindset:

Usually, Globalization is seen as another economic theory

to enhance business & trade. It must be understood that
Globalization is basically a mindset that is ready to
encapsulate the whole universe into its scheme of things; a
mindset that is broader & open to receive all ideas; that
takes the whole globe as an area of operation.

Globalization is an Opportunity:

It is often feared that the implementation of Globalization

will open up our domestic economy for foreign
competition, thereby endangering economic progress &
survival of local firms. While it does open our markets for
entry of multinationals, it also opens all other markets in
the whole world for our products & services too. Why cant
it be seen as an opportunity to scale up our operations
globally?

Globalization means Interdependence:

We have all grown reading history wherein either a country

is independent or a slave of another country. With the
advent of Globalization, it has been understood that no
country can be said to be totally independent, not needing
anything from any other country. Hence, a culture of
interdependence has been established between nations.

Globalization means Caring & Sharing:

The world today is more united and concerned about

common problems being faced by the people- be it global
warming, terrorism, or malnutrition etc. natural disasters
faced or atrocities encountered at any part of the world
attract immediate attention all over.

Globalization puts Technology in Service of Mankind:

The world would not have shrunk into a small global
village without the support of technological innovations
like Computers, Internet, Telecommunication, E-
Commerce etc. Thus, technology has proved to be the
major source of the concept of Globalization, and for
bringing people nearer.

Globalization is Inevitable & Irreversible:

There have been attempts by fundamentalist forces all over

the world to oppose and stop the process of Globalization
over past quarter century. Yet, despite differences in
political ideologies, the ruling parties have gone ahead with
implementation of Globalization policies. It is rightly
said, You can not stop the advent of an idea whose time
has come. Globalization is one such idea.

Globalization has Linked Politics with Economics:

Earlier, political ideologies and relations between nations

have determined the fate of people over centuries; with
economics being subservient to politics. However, in the
new era, it is the economics, employment generation and
public welfare that determine the need & strength of
relations between nations.

Globalization means Raised Standards of Living:

With consumers having more choice to pick quality items

at right price, and with no boundary restrictions on flow of
goods & services, the markets have turned from Sellers
Market to Buyers Market. This has helped in raising the
standard of living for vast populations across the world. It
has also raised aspirations among billions of people to
upgrade their lifestyles.

Globalization Demands and Respects Excellence:

With global level opportunities available to all the

countries, the field is wide open for the excellent
companies, products and people from any remote part of
the world to showcase their excellence and win over
markets and contracts. There is pressure on everyone to
continuously improve to meet the raised bar of
expectations.

Conclusion:
Thus, it is amply clear that, if taken in the right spirit, the
concept & practices of Globalization will help us in
improving our lives and productivity. We can still keep our
nation back by harping upon the outdated ideologies that
have become obsolete even in the regions where invented.
Or, we can equip ourselves to take maximum advantage of
opportunities thrown open by Globalization and help our
country to realize its true potential. The choice is ours.

Transcript of Globalization and Education

Globalization and Education
design by Dri Sirly for Prezi
1. Identify the characteristics of globalization that are related to education.

2. Describe how socio-cultural, environmental, geographical, political, and

equity issues affect globalization.

3. Discuss and explain globalization and education in the perspective of

conflict and concensus theorists.

4. Discuss the impact of globalization on the process and progress of

education.

Globalization - refers to an increasing interconnectedness and convergence of

activities and forms of life among diverse culture throughout the world.

Education systems can be seen as the core of the globalization process. Rinne
(2000) emphasizes that educational policy has become an ever more
important part of economic, trade, labor, and social policy in western
countries. One concrete global development is the development of mega-
universities, university network, and virtual universities that can offer
competitive training programs for students recruited all over the world.
OBJECTIVES
In
political terms
, a certain loss of nation-state sovereignty or at least the erosion of national
autonomy, and correspondingly, a weakening of the nation of the "citizen" as
a unified and unifying concepts, a concept that can be characterized by
precise roles, rights, obligations and status.

In
cultural terms
, a tension between the ways in which globalization brings fort more
standardization and cultural homogeneity, while also bringing more
fragmentation through the rise of locally oriented movements. Conflicted and
dialectical situation, with both cultural homogeneity and heterogeneity
appearing simultaneously in cultural landscape.
An education for globalization should therefore nurture the higher cognitive
skills require for problem finding.

Globalization links individuals and institutions across the world with

unprecedented interconnection. While it may spread certain freedoms, higher
living standards, and a sense of international relatedness, it also threatens the
world with a "universal" economy and culture rooted in north american and
western ideals and interest. Globalization will remain dominant paradigm for
the foreseeable future.

Global education traditionally aim to do : extend students' awareness of the

world in which they live by a diverse of human thoughts and actions , and
creativity. Emphasize on the changes in communication and relationship
among people throughout the world.
Global Education and Globalization
Characteristics of Globalization that can be link to Education
In
educational terms
, there is growing understanding the neo-liberal version of globalization,
particularly as implemented (and ideologically) by bilateral, multilateral and
international organizations.

In
economics terms
, a transition from Fordist to Post-Fordist forms of work place organization ;
a rise in internationalized advertizing and consumption patterns ; a reduction
in barriers to the free flow of goods, workers and investments across national
borders ; and correspondingly, new pressures of workers and consumer in the
society.
- demand for widening of education access for all

-continuous life long learning

-global versus local cultural developments.

-creation of new educational networked organizations

-changing of educational management from hierarchical institutions to equal

distributions of network organizations from commanding to negotiating.

-demand for more flexible and general skills.

Globalization and education

1. 1. Presented By:Chad Schildt
2. 2. CONNECTION 1: THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER In order to market
education and compete in a global market, education has undergone a
major shift. The expansion of higher education in Britain and Northern
Ireland during this period, for instance, involved a the restructuring of
courses and programmes so that they could be marketed. This included
marketing new courses such as MBAs, modulization (to achieve
economies of scale), and the increased use of part-time and distance
learning programmes (to target those already in work). The introduction of
student loans and course fees has raised, significantly, the direct cost
placed upon students - and helped to change peoples orientation to higher
education away from that of participants towards being consumers.
(Smith, 2002, para. 6) The increase in costs to target the changing, global
populations has made education more business like, thus inducing a
corporate takeover Connection: Challenge
3. 3. CONNECTION 1: THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER This is the most
important connection overall because ultimately, not all students
(consumers) are the same. Students individual needs must be taken into
consideration and a business-like approach may not be the best fit for
education. Connection: Challenge
4. 4. CONNECTION 2: THE GOVERNING OF EDUCATION There has been
a drastic shift in standardizing national educational policies, rather than
leaving education to states In order to promote social and economic
standing, educational policy has incorporated more politics than ever In
other words, the impact of globalization is less about the direct way in
which specific policy choices are made, as the shaping and reshaping of
social relations within all countries (Smith, 2002, para. 11) This is the
second most important because national standards could complete change
the way education is carried out. Connection: Issue
5. 5. CONNECTION 3: CHANGING TECHNOLOGIES As a result of the
need to compete on a global level, the use of technology has increased in
schools. More and more schools and incorporating new technologies,
hoping to expose children to a wealth of resources, preparing them for a
more global, technologically advanced world. This is the third most
important connection because the increase in technology will continue to
shape how we teach and provide instruction. Connection: Trend
6. 6. CONNECTION 4: BRANDING SCHOOLS With the increase in the use
of technology, and the wide reach of the internet, schools have become
more focused on branding. Many schools and school districts have
embraced social media to get their school (and brand) more attention, thus
increasing visibility. Branding can be important, particularly for schools
who must recruit students from other schools in the area. This is the fourth
most important connection because while it is necessary for some schools,
it is not necessary for all. Connection: Trend
7. 7. CONNECTION 5: DE-LOCALIZATION As populations become more
diverse, school districts are shifting towards a trend of de-localizing in favor
of a more standardized way of decision-making and policy. Decisions are
often no longer made at the school level, in favor of mandates handed
down by the state or district. This can become a problem when certain
aspects of a schools community is left behind in lieu of new policies and
procedures. This is the least important of the five connections because
not all school districts will take on a de-localized approach. Connection:
