Project Proposal

Prepared for Timilty Middle Schools Promising Pals Program

Tracey Benner and Christina DiPietro

Situation Analysis

The Promising Pals Program has been a tradition at the Timilty Middle School for 31 years.
Meant to enhance students literacy and writing skills, the Promising Pals Program allows
students to meet positive adult role models in the community. The Scott Ross Center at Simmons
College is one of the programs largest partners; it provides arounds 300 Simmons staff, faculty,
alumni and graduate students as pen pals for Timilty Middle School students.
Throughout the course of the spring semester the students and their assigned pen pals
exchange 45 letters. In May, at the end of the semester, Promising Pals holds a breakfast to to
allow students and their pen pals to meet in person. The breakfast is an annual tradition of the
Promising Pals Program. It not only gives the students the opportunity to meet their pen pals for
the first time, but it also allows the students to engage with their pen pals in their school
environment, show them their school work, play games and engage in other entertainment
provided throughout the event.
Every year Promising Pal provides their breakfast attendees with two resources; a
souvenir journal and a breakfast invitation card. Promising Pals has asked Studio 5 to design the
front and back covers of the journal and an invitation postcard. This year Promising Pals theme
is Building Communities: Voice, Values, Vision. In addition to this theme, Promising Pals wants
to celebrate its 31st year by incorporating the program's core values.

The Plan

Promising Pals needs designed materials for their annual breakfast event. The breakfast
event is on June 2, so deliverables will be finalized by the end of April for printing. Our Studio 5
team plans to:
Review past designs and themes of the event
Consult client about their preferences and hopes for the design
Design an invitation card (4in x 6 or 5in x 7) and cover (8.5in x 11)

Benefits of the Proposal

The designed postcard will allow Promising Pals to invite volunteers, students, pen pals,
and other program participants to their annual breakfast. The designed front and back covers will
provide the students and their pen pals with a memorable souvenir for the event and their
semester's work.

Learning Outcomes

As a group, we exercised our communication, time managing, and strategizing skills. We

found it was important to communicate with the clients weekly. The design process is subjective
and by communicating frequently we minimized subjective errors. Throughout the process, we
were afraid we wouldnt finish in time, but we finished with extra time because we managed the
timeline more closely. Finally, we learned how to strategize a plan for design work. There are
many steps that need to be taken that we didnt originally foresee.
