Abstract
Now a days use of castellated beam is become very popular due to its advantageous structural applications. Fabrication of
Castellated beam are done by cutting in its web of hot rolled steel (HRS) I section into zigzag pattern & after that the cutting
portion are rejoining it over another. By rejoining the cutting portion over one another the depth of the beam is also increases.
The openings provided in the web portion is generally circular, hexagonal, diamond or sinusoidal in shape. The load carrying
capacity of the castellated beam is increased by increasing the depth of the beam. There are no of modes of failures in the
castellated beam due to its increase in depth like lateral torsional buckling, formation of vierendeel mechanism, rupture of
welded joint in a web post & shear buckling of web post which needs to take care of. Therefore for minimizing these failures
modes study is carried out which shows that use of stiffeners in web portion is important. The literature survey shows that the
use of stiffeners in the web portion of castellated beam minimizing the deflection in that portion & also increasing the strength.
Review papers are suggested that using stiffeners along the transvers direction reduces the stress concentration near openings.

I. INTRODUCTION

Castellated beam is also called as perforated web. The main objective of perforated web is to increase the moment of inertia
which increases by increasing the depth of section. From many years the castellated beam have been used. In 1950s due to cheap
labour cost the castellated beam were firstly used in Europe. The most important advantages of castellated beam is to improve
strength due to increased depth of the section without any additional weight. Castellated beams are light in weight & strong.
They are cheap. They are easy to assemble at the construction site.

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

Peijun Wang, Kangrui Guo, Mei Liu, Lulu Zhang work on Shear buckling strength of web-posts in a castellated steel
beam with hexagonal web openings.
By using finite element method author have studied the shear buckling behaviors of web-post in castellated steel beam under
vertical shear with hexagonal web opening. In this paper the FEM of the castellated beam with hexagonal web opening has
been carried out. Also comparison of load-middle span deflection curves & buckling deformations of circular opening has been
calculated.

Delphine Sonck, Jan Belis work on Weak-axis flexural buckling of cellular & castellated columns.
Weak-axis flexural buckling resistance is calculated in this paper. While calculating the resistance the influence of the modified
residual stress pattern & modified diagram of cellular & castellated beam are recognized. Numerical study of critical bucklin g
load & the buckling resistance of simply supported cellular & castellated members are carried out. In the numerical modeling
stress pattern are introduced by privios studies.

Delphine Sonck, Jan Belis work on Lateral-torsional buckling resistance of cellular beams.
In this paper lateral- torsional buckling behavior of cellular beams is investigated using numerical model that was validated
based on experimental results. In this model, the effect of the modified residual stress pattern was taken into account.
Preliminary design was done by using the results of parametric study. This preliminary design is depends on the European
guidelines for the calculation of the lateral-torsional buckling.

Peijun Wang, Ning Ma, Xudong Wang work on Numerical studies on large deflection of restrained castellated steel beam
in a fire.
By using finite element method the large deflection behaviors of restrained castellated steel beam in a fire are investigated . The
validation is done by using the numerical results on solid web restrained steel beams at elevated temperature in a fire. The
parameters included in the design are expansion ratio, opening dimensions in web portion, shape of the opening, arrangements
of the opening. The web opening shape & the arrangement of web opening have very little effect on the behavior of the
restrained castellated steel beam in a fire.

Peijun Wang, Oijie Maa, Xudong Wang work on Investigation on vierendeel mechanism failure of castellated steel
beams with fillet corner web openings.
By using finite element modelling the investigation on vierendeel failure of castellated beam with fillet corner web opening is
done. Due to fillet web opening the stress redistribution is done which increase the load carrying capacity of the web perfor ated
members. In this paper the expansion ratio is taken into account due to that as the expansion ratio increases the global bending
moment capacity of the web opening also increases

III. CONCLUSION

For the castellated beam most research have been done. In that shear buckling strength of castellated beam, lateral-torsional
buckling of castellated beam, vierendeel mechanism of castellated beam, weak-axial flexural buckling of beam researches are
carried out. Also comparison between two types of openings like circular & hexagonal, diamond & circular are calculated.
From above all reviews it is observed that, there is lac of study castellated beam with & without stiffeners by experimental &
analytical method. So, in this project I am going to investigate structural behavior of castellated beam with & without stiffeners.
