Procedure :
For Liquid Limit Test
i. Take 425 micron passing sieve soil sample of about 120 to 150 gm.
ii. Soak it in distilled water for 24 hours
iii. Make a paste of soil specimen with help of spatula by adding necessary water and put
the sample in Cone Penetrometer. Adjust the moisture in the soil specimen such that
Penetration reading in range of 20mm to 30mm is obtained after allowing 5 second
time for penetration Take the representative of that sample in Nickle crucible and keep
in Oven at 105 to 110 C to find the moisture content.
Roll the same sample with palm at the rate of 80 to 90 stroke/minute on grounded glass till the
threads of 3mm starts crumbling. Take the representative sample of crumbled threads in Nickle
crucible and keep in Oven at 105 to 110 C to determine the moisture content which indicates
Plastic limit (WP) of sample.
Utility : To know the cohesive nature of soil. The plasticity index of soil
depends on clay fraction present in soil
