15 Min Learning Activity #1: Fold and Number blank stares.
Pick a piece of paper (Ok, lets get our _____ papers out.)
We are going to work as teams, so if you dont have the team paper in
your hand I want you to be drawing what I draw in your notebooks incase
someone gets lost! We are going to trade off, so everyone will get a turn.
This paper is our Quarters and Halves Paper, so we are going to fold it in
half. Lets put the two ends together and fold the bottom, then we are going
to take the ends and fold them into our first fold line. Demonstrate using
an accordion fold. We are going to write, Quarters and Halves on the
far left side of our piece of paper.
Pick our second piece of paper from the remaining two and have students
pick the same piece. This will be our Thirds and Sixths Paper. To fold the
paper make an S shape and fold accordion style again. Fold each of these
sections in half to create sixths. Have students write, Thirds and Sixths on
the far left side of the paper.
Our last paper is our Fifths and Tenths paper. To fold take our ruler and
mark every ____ (length of strip divided by 5). Then fold each smaller
section in half. Label Fifths and Tenths on far left side.
Now that we have our number lines made we need to mark them up, so I
want one person at each table to take one of the strips of paper and we
are going to mark them together. Optional: If you dont have a paper strip
remember to write this down on your notebook number line incase someone
gets lost.
Start by demonstrating on the Quarters and Halves. So if I start with
the Quarters and Halves and I start at the beginning I am going to start
with a quarter (draw a line down the fold with 1/4 written big). Now what
comes after a quarter? Thats right, a half which is also known as two
quarters (draw a line down the middle fold with 2/4=1/2 written big).
Lastly we have our three-fourths, which is our last fold here (point to the
last fold, draw a line down the fold and write 3/4 next to it).
3-4 Min Let the students rotate the unfinished papers and fill in the fractions. Use
this time to observe their understanding of fractions and the instructions.

Stage 3: Learning Experience

15 Min Learning activity #2: Application Questions Let more confident
Ok, now that we have our number lines made, we are going to do some students help the
questions! less confident
Have the same two students hand out the questions page. The front side members of their
relates to our physical number lines that weve created, the back side has group.
extra questions for practice and homework. Due the question 1 with the
students and let them do question 2.

2-4 Min Closure:

So today weve reviewed fractions, weve learned how to fold number
lines if we want to use them in the future, and we have used number
lines to see answers to questions dealing with comparing fractions.
If Number Lines aren't your Maths language thats completely fine, I like
remembering the decimal values of fractions and comparing those.
If Number Lines are your thing thats wonderful and you will have so
much fun using them!
Remember to practice what weve learned tonight with the questions on the
back of the sheet _____ and _____ handed out and if you want some extra
growthif your saying, Mr. Fletcher, this is too easy! then I want you to
practice converting each fraction into a decimal for the ones we know.

REFLECTION:
What went well?

What should have been done differently?

. Jimmy, Marnie, Lindsey, and Bruce are all in a race. Part way through the race their distance is recorded in
fractions of how much of the race theyve completed. This was put in the following chart:

Name Distance
Bruce 1/5 of the race
Jimmy 2/3 of the race
Lindsey 1/3 of the race
Marnie 4/6 of the race
A) Plot each person on your number lines.
B) Who is currently in first, second, third, and last place?

2. Later in the race the runners distance was recorded again and these were the results:

Name Distance
Bruce 6/8 of the race
Jimmy 9/10 of the race
Lindsey 3/4 of the race
Marnie 4/5 of the race
A) Plot each person on your number lines.
B) Who is most likely to win the race?
