Question 1.
The lecture introduced you to eight detailing strategies to reduce moisture penetration. What are these
detailing strategies, provide an example of each explaining how it deals with the reduction of moisture
penetration.

Question 2.
The image below is a timber window sill. Identify the detailing strategies that this element incorporates
to deal with water penetration, explain how the detailing strategy is applied and how it deals with
moisture.

The image below shows a recess in the floor which is filled with water.
a) Is this an example of poor detailing or effective detailing?
b) If it is poor detailing why is it happening?
c) If it is effective detailing what makes it so?

a) Why is it an important item to consider in design detailing?
b) What is the most effective strategy to deal with the consequences of the dew point?

Question 5.
The detail below is a vertical detail through the roof edge of a building.
a) Why does this detail appear to show two cappings?
b) If the intention is to keep moisture away from the building why does the capping slope back
towards the building?
c) The drawing shows and annotates Colorbond roof deck, with the roof deck turned up at its
end where it meets the wall. Discuss if this is a drawing error or is if it is intentional? Provide
supporting argument in your response.
d) This detail appears to be fundamentally flawed in that it may create potential problems with
the roof deck in the future. Why?
e) The framing appears to be lightweight steel wall framing with plywood lining on the external
face. What two functions does the plywood lining provide?

f) What structural function could the plywood cladding provide? (not a detailing question)

Question 6.
Discuss three sources of movement in buildings. Sketch and annotate an example of a detailing
strategy that deals with each of these sources of movement.

Question 8.
The image below is a vertical detail of a reglet incorporated in a precast wall panel. Is it well detailed or
not explain.

The detail below appears to be fundamentally flawed in dealing with water penetration into the building
fabric. Two detailing strategies have been addressed in the drawing but a connected detailing strategy
appears not to have been shown. What are the detailing strategies that have been provided and what
has not?

The image is a steel cleat, why is this a well designed detail in addressing constructability? Explain.

Question 11.
Sketch, annotate and explain three other details that deal with the issue of constructability.
