ANSWERS & EXPLANATION

APTITUDE TEST Test (1741) 2016

1: (c)
Let the speed of the bus be 5x and that of the train be 3x.
And the distance travelled in the train and bus be 7y and 9y respectively.

We know that the time is given by the formula, Time =

Time spent in the bus = 9y/5x

Time spent in the train = 7y/3x
Ratio of the time spent in the bus to that in the train = 9y/5x : 7y/3x = 27:35
Hence, option (c) is correct.

2: (a)
Given that the profits of A, B and C are Rs 3,900, Rs 5,200 and Rs 9,100 respectively.
Ratio of investments of A, B and C = 3900:5200:9100 = 39:52:91 = 3:4:7.
Hence, statement 1 is true.
Let Individual contributions of A, B and C be 3x, 4x, and 7x respectively.
Total investment of A + B = 3x + 4x = 7x = Investment of C = 50% of total initial investment.
Hence, statement 2 is false.
Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.

3: (d)
Let us assume the manufacturing cost = Rs. 100
Profit = 8% of Rs. 100 = Rs. 8
Selling Price = Rs. 100 + Rs. 8 = Rs. 108
Due to global fall in crude oil prices, the manufacturing cost of petrol falls by 10%.
Reduced manufacturing cost = Rs. 100 10% of 100 = Rs. 90.
Selling Price = Rs. 108.
Profit = SP CP = Rs. 108 Rs. 90 = Rs. 18.

We know that profit percentage =

1 www.visionias.in Vision IAS

(We can understand this logically also. Profit percentage is always on cost price/ manufacturing price.
Thus he is gaining Rs. 18 on manufacturing price of Rs. 90. Thus, what is percentage?)

Therefore, profit percentage =

Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.

4: (c)
Method I:
Let the cost price of rice be Rs. 100 per kg.
Total cost price = Quantity of Rice Price per kg = 750 100 = Rs. 75,000.
It is given that, the remaining part is 2/5th of the total and was sold at 15% loss. Thus, the first part is
3/5th of the total.
Let us assume that 3/5th part is sold at x% profit.
Net profit on this part = 3/5 75000 x/100 = Rs. 450x.
Net loss on 2/5th part = 2/5 75000 15/100 = Rs. 4,500.
According to the question, there is no net profit or loss. So, the profit made on 3/5th part must be equal
to the loss made on 2/5th part.
450x = 4500.
Or x = 10%
Method II:
In a single step, it may be said that the profit on the first part is equal to the loss on the second part.
Therefore, 750 3/5 x/100 = 750 2/5 15/100.
Or x = 10%
Hence, option (c) is correct.

5: (d)
As the price of the article is not known, we cannot determine profit or loss using statement 1.
So, statement I can or cannot imply that he made a net profit. Now let us consider statement 2.
Giving 10% discount on marked price will bring the selling price of the article to a lower value than the
cost price.
For example, if the cost price = Rs. 100,
Then, Marked price = Rs 110.
Selling Price after 10% discount = Rs 110 Rs 11 = Rs 99 < cost price.
Also, using formula, Net increase or decrease = a + b + ab/100 for two successive percent increase or
decrease.
When a% = -b% (markup percentage = -discount percentage), then:
Net increase or decrease = b b b2/100 = - b2/100
As we get a negative value, the shopkeeper must have suffered a net loss.
So, statement 2 implies that he made a loss and not profit.
Hence option (d) is correct.

6: (d)
Total matches played = 25
Matches won = 17
Matches lost = 25 17 = 8
Required Ratio = Matches won : Matches lost = 17 : 8
Hence, option (d) is correct.

7: (a)
The total number of students appearing in the examination has to be a multiple of 24 (as 11 + 13 = 24).
Out of the given numbers, only 24240 is a multiple of 24.
Hence, option (a) is correct.

8: (a)
We need to calculate the average speed for all the four intervals in the given choices to find the
maximum average speed.
In the time period 8:00 AM 9:00 AM:
Distance travelled = 100 km
Average Speed = Distance/Time = 100 km/1 hour = 100 km/hour
In the time period 9:00 AM 10:30 AM:
Distance travelled = 180 -100 = 80 km
Average Speed = 80 km/1.5 hour = 53.33 km/hour
In the time period 10:30 AM 11:00 AM:
Distance travelled = 220 180 = 40 km
Average Speed = 40 km/0.5 hour = 80 km/hour
In the time period 9:00 AM 9:30 AM:
Distance travelled = 120 100 = 20 km
Average Speed = 20 km/0.5 hour = 40 km/hour
Hence, we can see that the maximum speed was during the interval 8:00 AM 9:00 AM = 100 km/hour
Hence, option (a) is correct.
9: (a)
Statement 1 is correct as first sentence of the passage says that cases of custodial tortures have
increased in spite of emphatic decisions of the Supreme Court strongly condemning all forms of
custodial violence.
Statement 2 is beyond the scope of this passage, hence wrong.
10: (a)
Statement 1 is correct as the 4th sentence of the passage says that Basu urged the court to prescribe
some strong modalities in this direction.
Statement 2 is wrong as thought this seems correct but this is beyond the scope of this passage.
Statement 3 is wrong as this is also beyond the scope of this passage.

3 www.visionias.in Vision IAS

11: (d)
Option (a) is wrong as the passage in 4th sentence says that swine flu can circulate among swine
throughout the year.
Option (b) is wrong as the passage in 3rd sentence says that swine flu cause few deaths in pigs.
Option (c) is wrong as the passage in 6th sentence says that it is not transmitted by eating cooked pork
products.
Option (d) is correct as the passage in 3rd sentence says that swine flu can cause high levels of illness in
pig herds.

12: (a)
Statement 1 is correct as the passage in 5th sentence says that swine flu is transmitted from person to
person by inhalation. Thus, we can say that swine flu is a contagious disease.
Statement 2 is wrong as the second part of the statement is mentioned in last sentence of the passage
but first part that is, very high fever, though correct in general, is not given in the passage. Hence,
statement 2 is beyond the scope of this passage.

13: (c)
Statement 1 is wrong as the first sentence says that DDUGJY has been approved by the union
government and it draws inspiration from the similar pioneering scheme implemented by the
Government of Gujarat.
Passage talks only about rural areas getting a boost from DDUGJY and not says anything about urban
areas. Hence, statement 2 is also wrong.
Thus, both the given statements are incorrect.

14: (d)
Statement 1 is wrong as the passage in 6th sentence says that the rural electrification corporation is the
nodal agency for this scheme and not Ministry of Power.
Statement 2 is correct as is expressly provided in 5th sentence of the passage that RGGVY has been
subsumed in the new scheme as its rural component.
Statement 3 is also correct as it is mentioned in 3rd sentence of the given passage.
Hence option (d) is the correct answer.

15: (c)
2nd Paragraph talks about the coercive centralized institutional authority. It says that if a small section of
society is allowed to control the cultural symbols then democracy becomes destructive. Hence, Option
(c) is correct.
Option (a) is incorrect as the process becomes destructive and not that cultural symbols are destroyed.
Option (b) is not found in the paragraph.
Option (d) is also close but it does not explain the reason why Ambedkar was against such authority
16:(d)
Statement 1 is correct as seen from last paragraph
Statement 2 is correct as seen from 1st paragraph.
Statement 3 is correct as seen from the 1st line of last paragraph
Thus, all the given statements can be inferred.

Explanation for Q 17 and 18:
A and B are sitting in the leftmost column and B is not sitting at the front in any column(given in last
statement). Also E is sitting just behind A. Thus, A, B and E are sitting in the first column. A is the first
student in the leftmost column and E is sitting just behind A and B is sitting behind E. Hence,
arrangement of all the three students of the first column may be represented as follows:

Now, C and D are sitting in the middle column and H is sitting just behind C. D is not sitting at the front,
therefore C is the student sitting at the front in the middle column. H is second and D is the third in the
middle column. It may be represented as follows:

B, D, F, H and I are not sitting at the front in any column. It means that the students sitting at the front in
the three columns are out of A, C, E and G. We already know that A and C are sitting in the front of I and
II column respectively. E cannot be the sitting at the front in column III, as he is sitting behind A in
column I. Thus G is the student sitting at the front in the rightmost column.
So the remaining two students, i.e. F and I, are sitting at second and third position in the rightmost
column, not necessarily in the same order. The final picture that emerges may be represented as
follows:

17: (b)
A, C and G are the students sitting at the front in the three columns

18: (d)
It cannot be determined that who is sitting just behind G. Hence, answer is (d).

19: (c)
P is standing between Q and R. Hence, following two cases are possible:
5 www.visionias.in Vision IAS
Case I:

Case II:

It is given that Q is standing to the left of T. But in the case II, Q is on the left of P. Hence, case II can be
rejected. We get the following final arrangement:

Thus, S is the one standing on the left of R.

20: (c)
While going up, speed of Ravi is 6 steps per min and he takes a break of 20 seconds after every 12 steps.
Therefore, total time in completing a journey of every 12 steps = 12/6 min + 20 sec = 2 min 20 sec = 140
sec.
That is, for 2 min he is climbing 12 steps and then taking a break of 20 sec(total 140 sec).
Now, 8 min or 480 sec can be broken as 420 + 60 = 3 140 + 60
Steps taken by Ravi in 8 min or 480 sec = 312 steps + 6 steps in last one min = 42 steps
While going down, his speed is 14 steps per min, thus time taken by him in coming down = Total number
of steps / Speed in steps per min = 42/14 = 3 min

21: (d)
Let number of sixes be X and number of fours be Y.
Contribution of sixes = Contribution of fours
6X = 4Y...... (i)
Total score = 6X + 4Y = 240
From (i) we can put 4Y = 6X
6X + 6X = 12 X= 240
Or X = 20
22: (b)
The typewriter can type 500 letters in 60 seconds.
Speed of typing = 500/60 = 25/3 letters per sec
He takes 30 seconds to change the page.
Total time in typing one page plus changing the page = 300/(25/3) + 30 = 36 + 30 = 66 sec
In 11 min, i.e. 660 seconds, the number of pages he can type = 660/66 = 10 pages
Note: After typing the 10thpage, when Amit changes the page, 11 min gets over (i.e. just before he starts
typing the 11th page).

23: (c)
Method 1:
Let the deal price be Rs x lacs.
Then commission paid by the seller as well as the buyer = 10% of x = Rs 0.1x lacs
It is given that after paying commission, Ragini gets Rs 4.5 lacs.
Rs 4.5 lacs = Deal price Commission = x - 0.1x = 0.9x
Or x = 4.5/0.9 = Rs 5 lacs
Ramesh pays the deal price plus commission = x + 0.1x = 1.1x = 1.1 5 = Rs 5.5 lacs
Method 2:
It is given that after paying commission, Ragini gets Rs 4.5 lacs and commission paid is 10% of the deal
price. Thus Raginis net earnings is 90% of the deal price.
Rs 4.5 lacs = 90% of deal price
Deal price = 4.5 100/90 = Rs 5 lacs
Total amount spent by Ramesh = Deal price + Commission (10% of deal price)
= 5 + 510/100 = Rs 5.5 lacs
24: (c)
Method I:
Let one side of the original cube = x
The surface area of the original cube = 6x2
The cube is cut into eight similar cubes as shown below:

7 www.visionias.in Vision IAS

As shown in the figure, one side of the smaller cube = x/2
Surface area of one smaller cube = 6(x/2)2 = 3x2/2
Total surface area of 8 similar cubes = 83x2/2 = 12x2
Hence, required ratio = 12x2/6x2 = 12/6 = 2/1 or 2:1
Method II:
The cube in question is a 222 cube. Hence, there are 8 smaller cubes and all of them are corner cubes.
We know that out of the total of 6 faces every corner cube has 3 faces exposed. Thus, in case of every
corner cube only half of the total surface area is exposed while being a part of the original bigger cube.
Thus, required ratio = Total Surface area of 8 individual smaller cubes/Surface area of original cube
= Total Surface area of one smaller cube/Exposed Surface area of one smaller cube while being a part of
the original bigger cube
= 2/1 or 2:1

25: (d)
Option (a) is not found in the passage. Rather we find opposite of the statement that Gandhiji wanted to
unify different faiths in struggle for independence.
Option (b) is correct per se but not the reason for the choice
Option (c) is only partially correct
Option (d) is correct reason for the choice as explained in the first paragraph

26: (b)
Statement 1, 2 and 4 are validated from the passage.
Statement 3 is incorrect. Passage does not have any reference regarding establishment of democracy.
Hence, option (b) is correct

27: (b)
Here author is in disagreement with refugees paying their valuables for their upkeep. Author points out
that condition of migrants is already bad thus author is not agreeing to applying the principle of
everyone using up their own resources first to the migrants. Hence, option (b) is correct. Thus, it also
shows that option (c) and (d) are incorrect.
Option (a) is incorrect as author is in disagreement with Danish governments policy. But it is nowhere
said that author does not agree with Danish government giving help to refugees.

28: (c)
The passage points out that no one wants to go after the rich and well-connected wrong-doer, which
means they get away with even more This is classic case of weak state. That means that weak state is
one which not able to implement laws equally among different individuals. Thus, option (c) is correct
option.
Options (a), (b), and (d) are correct to some extend about India. But they do not point towards the term
weak state.
29: (c)
The passage clearly says that these supply-side reforms are a welcome step. Thus, statement 1 is correct.
Author also points out that, unlike Indias large business groups, small entrepreneurs find it difficult to
navigate the complex bureaucratic and regulatory maze. Thus, new initiative is going to help small
businessmen more than big businessmen. Thus, statement 2 is incorrect.
Author says that, what makes this initiative especially welcome is the fact that start-ups hold the
potential of creating more jobs. And this initiative is a supply side measure for start ups. Thus,it will have
positive impact on job creation. Hence, statement 3 is also incorrect.
The author also says that China has been one of the engines of global growth and slowdown in china will
affect global economic prospects. And this will further affect growth of manufacturing sector. Thus,
statement 4 is correct.
Hence, correct statements are, 1 and 4. Answer option (c).
30: (d)

The passage states that, the new initiative is aimed at addressing difficulties in starting enterprises, exits
etc. thus we can infer that Indian startups face problems like difficulty in starting enterprises, exits etc.
Thus, option (a) can be inferred from the passage.
Passage further says that, new initiatives signal a possible end to the inspector raj that has sapped the
energy and spirit of many young entrepreneurs in the country. This means a kind of inspector raj is still
present in India. Thus, option (b) can also be inferred from the passage.
Author says that, what makes this initiative especially welcome is the fact that start-ups hold the
potential of creating more jobs. Thus, job creation may be one of the intentions of government behind
these initiatives. Thus, option (c) can also be inferred from the passage
Option (d) is extended too much. The passage talks majorly about start ups and not for whole
manufacturing sector. Hence we cannot infer option (d) from the passage.
31: (c)

Statement i is correct as author is saying thatrapid changes in electric storage technology are happening.
And thus decision by the three public sector oil to set up a refinery is imprudent. That shows, oil sector
companies will be adversely affected.
Passage clearly says that, electric cars not just shift pollution out of urban centres to wherever the
electricity is generated but cut overall energy consumption as well, as these are far more energy-
efficient as well. This means, increase in electric cars may lead to reduction of pollution in urban centres.
This also can be inferred.

Hence answer (c) that is 1 and 2 both are correct.

32: (b)

The dilemma given in the passage can be explained as: In absence of MAT companies evade taxes. Now
government is planning to abolish MAT. But to offset loss of taxes government is removing exemptions
and incentives. But author says abrupt withdrawal of exemptions and incentives is also unfair to
investors.
This dilemma can be best addressed by doing away with MAT as well as exemptions and incentives
gradually. Thus option (b) is correct.

Option (a) will lead to loss of revenue to government. Thus option (a) is incorrect.
Option (c) may appear to be true but it may not be practical.
Option (d) may also appear to be true, but option (b) is more appropriate.

33: (a)
Last line of the passage validates the answer.
Option (b) is incorrect as author refutes the belief that Science is the gift of Western Europe.
Option (c) is a far fetched statement and thus incorrect.
And, option (d) is against the central idea that is discussed in the passage.

34: (a)
Statement 1 is correct. Second sentence of the passage clearly indicates the importance of history of
science.
Statement 2 is incorrect. These two sentences (1)Science is nothing but understanding the nature of
reality. (2) At that level there is not much difference between Indian and Western approach. Clearly
indicate that statement 2 is incorrect. Hence correct option is Option (a).

35: (c)
Total distance = 200+100 = 300 m
Total speed = total distance/ total time = 300/12 m/sec = 25m/sec
Let speed of slower train be x. Hence, the speed of the faster train = x+.5x= 1.5x
Now, x+1.5x= 25m/sec
Or x = 10m/sec
Speed of the faster train = 101.5 m/sec = 15 m/sec = 15 3.6 km/hr= 54 km/hr
Note: When we have to convert unit of speed from m/sec into km/hr we have to multiply by 18/5 or 3.6.
Opposite is When we have to convert unit of speed from km/hr into m/sec we have to divide by 18/5 or
multiply by 5/18

Let Deepika's monthly salary be y.
The amount that she saves = 0.80.60.85y = Rs 3468.
Here we have to understand that, when Deepika is spending 20% remaining is 80%. When she spends
40% remaining is 60 %. And when she spends 15% remaining is 85 %. Thus we have to multiply by 0.8,
0.6 and 0.85.
Finally, solving for y, we get y=Rs. 8,500

Total number of chocolates= 6012=720
30 % of 720= 216
10% of the students = 60/10 = 6
216 chocolates are distributed among 6 students.
Hence, number of chocolates that each student gets = 216/6 = 36 chocolates.

38: (d)
Method I:
Let the required ratio = x : 1
Quantity of milk and water in x litres of A will be 4x/7 and 3x/7 litres respectively.
Similarly, Quantity of milk and water in 1 litre of B will be 4/9 and 5/9 litres respectively.
Now, Total quantity of milk in the new mixture = total quantity of water in the new mixture
4x/7 + 4/9 = 3x/7 + 5/9
x = 7/9
This means both mixtures should be mixed in the ratio (7/9):1 = 7:9
Method II:
Container A contains milk and water in the ratio of 4:3, i.e. 7 parts (4 parts of milk and 3 of water).
Container B contains milk and water in the ratio of 4: 5, i.e. 9 parts (4 parts of milk and 5 of water).
If we assume every part to be of the same volume, then we can see that mixing the 7 parts of A and the
9 parts of B will lead to the formation of a solution having 8 parts of milk (4+4) and 8 parts of water
(3+5). Hence, we can see that A and B must be mixed in the ratio of 7:9.

39: (a)
Method I:
Let PR = x
They are meeting at point R, means within same time A travels PR and B travels PQ+QR. When time is
same, distance travelled is proportional to speed.
PR : (PQ + QR) = 12:16
PR : (84 + 84-PR) = 12:16
x/(168-x) = 12/16=3/4
x= 72 km
Method II:
In such situations, Distance travelled by A, i.e. PR = 2D (a/(a+b))
And Distance travelled by B, (PQ + QR) = 2D (b/(a+b))
Where D = PQ, a= speed of A, b = speed of B
Hence, PR = 2 84 (12/(12+16)) = 168 12/28 = 72 km
Method III:
Initially, both A and B will travel in the same direction till P reaches Q, i.e. for 84/16 hrs, with a relative
speed of 16-12 = 4 km/hr.
Hence, when B will be at Q, the distance between A and B = 4 (84/16) = 21 km.
Now, B will turn back. So now their relative speed = 12 + 16 = 28 km/hr.
11 www.visionias.in Vision IAS
The time taken to meet = Distance/Relative speed = 21/28 = hr.
Distance travelled by B in this time, i.e. QR = 16 (3/4) = 12 km.
Hence, PR = 84 12 = 72 km.

5 pens are gained on selling 15 pens.
Profit %= 5/15*100= 33.33 %
Method II:
Let the CP of one pen be Rs. x.
Now, SP of 15 pen = CP of 20 pen = 20x
Total CP of 15 pen = 15x
Hence, profit = [(SP-CP)/CP] 100 = [(20x-15x)/15x] 100 = 100/3 = 33.33%

41: (b)
Let CP = Rs. x

10x/100 = 1600
x= Rs. 16,000

42: (d)
Statements main focus is Optimism and its impact on Sensex. Hence correct answer is Option (d).

43: (d)
There are two sentences in this question. First sentence speaks about challenge in technological
diffusion due to inadequate agricultural services. Second sentence says mobile phones can help in
overcoming the challenge. Hence correct sentence is Option (d).

44: (d)
Option (a) is incorrect as it is an extrapolation of the current scenario and may or may not be a certainty
in the future
Option (b) and (c) are also incorrect according to the above logic

45: (b)
Option (a) is not the assumption behind the passage. The passage clearly assumes that it is possible for
despotism to emerge in a democracy. On the basis of this assumption it goes on to criticize that
despotism is not acceptable.
Hence, option (b) is correct.
Option (c) is the opinion expressed in the passage and not the assumption behind the passage.
46: (d)
Option (a) is incorrect as the statement makes comparison only for those batsmen who have played a
minimum of 10 innings
Options (b) and (c) are mere opinions and not valid conclusions
Option (d) is valid as MS Dhoni has played at least 10 innings according to the question
12 www.visionias.in Vision IAS
47: (d)

Option (a) is incorrect as online filing of tax returns is not one of the preconditions but arranging data
becomes easier when tax returns are filed online.
Option (b) is also incorrect as arranging data according to name and permanent account number of the
taxpayer is feasible. But author suggests not to do it to maintain confidentiality.

Similarly, option (c) is also incorrect. Even if five per cent of tax returns are not filed online collating data
on tax collection according to the income bracket and the number of people within each bracket will be
feasible. Only thing is task will become difficult.
Thus, correct answer is option (d).

48: (a)

The passage says that the Baltic Dry Index can be a leading indicator of future economic growth. And the
index fell to its lowest level in 30 years. Thus we can conclude that fall in index may be an indicator of
global economic recession in the near future. Thus option (a) is correct option.
Option (b) may also be correct in reality that is multiple developments may have led to fall in the Baltic
Dry Index. But we cannot conclude this from the given passage.
Option (c) is factually incorrect.

And again, option (d) cannot be concluded from the given passage. Here, in fact investors will decrease
their investments due to fall in index.

49: (a)

It is clear from the passage that Atticus is Jems father and Miss Maudie is Jems mother. Thus, only
statement 1 is correct.

50: (d)

The author is describing personal views. Throughout the passage author tells how she feels about rain.
We can definitely conclude that these are personal views when author gives example of her hairs.
Thus, options (a), (b) and (c) are incorrect. And correct conclusion can be option (d) which says as far as
author is concerned, rain is certainly not her friend.
51: (b)

The passage says that,India is set to emerge as the worlds fastest-growing major economy. So we
cannot conclude that India will be fastest growing. So, statement 1. is incorrect.
The passage also says that, Indian economy by 2015 will be ahead of Chinas. And forecast for India is 7.5
per cent in FY 2015-16. Thus, we can conclude that, Chinas growth will be less than 7.5 per cent. Thus,
statement 2. is correct.
Hence, correct answer is option (b).

13 www.visionias.in Vision IAS

52: (d)

The author is not forecasting about what will happen with Chinese economy in future. Thus, we cannot
say if author is optimistic or not. Thus, options (a) and (c) are incorrect.
Also, we cannot see if author is concerned or not about Chinese economy. Thus, option (b) is also
incorrect. But, throughout the passage author is critical of Chinese economy. Thus, correct answer is
option (d).

53: (c)
Statement 1 is incorrect. Passages mentions about lack of essential services for poor but does not say
that public services are accessible only to privileged.
Second paragraph validates the Statement 2. Second paragraph directly states that Indias highly
privatized and compartmentalized health and education systems also perpetuate social disparities.
Similarly first paragraph validates Statement 3. The opening statement of the passage says that, Well-
functioning public services, especially (but not only) in the fields such as education and health, are
critical in ensuring that growth leads to rapid improvement in peoples living conditions
Hence correct answer is Option(c).

54: (a)
Option (a) is correct. Tone of the statement given fits in with the option (a).
55: (c)
Statement 1 is clearly validated from the last paragraph. Passage states that, India also faces larger
issues of accountability in the public sector as a whole
Statement 2 is correct. Tone of the first paragraph validates the statement 2.
Statement 3 is incorrect. From passage its clear privatization of services is not the way to foster
participatory growth. Hence correct answer is Option (c)

56: (b)
Option (a) is incorrect as we cannot make the correlation of skill on the basis of performance
Option (b) is correct as women are there performance is better in knowledge sector jobs
Option (c) is incorrect as nowhere there is any mention of preference of women

57: (d)
Option (a) is incorrect as number of people travelling by foot and air is not given.
Option (b) and (c) are not based on the passage and are mere opinions.
58: (d)
Method I:
Let the distance of the upstream and downstream journey be d km each.
Upstream speed = 8-4 = 4 kmph
Downstream speed = 8+4 = 12 kmph
Average speed = total distance / total time
= 2d/ (d/12 + d/4) =2d/ (4d/12 ) = 6 kmph
Method II:

14 www.visionias.in Vision IAS

Let us assume a distance of 12km. He goes 12 km down the stream and comes up.
Upstream speed = 8-4 = 4 kmph
Downstream speed = 8+4 = 12 kmph
Thus, time taken to travel downstream= 12/12 = 1 hour.
And, time taken to travel up stream= 12/4 = 3 hours.
Total distance= 12 + 12= 24 km.
Total time= 3+1= 4 hr.
Average speed = total distance / total time
= 24/ 4 = 6 kmph

Explanations for Q 59 and 60:

Since both Rahul and Saurav have exactly one neighbour, this implies that they are standing at the
corners. Now, there is only one person between Rahul and Sachin. This implies that Rahul is at number 1
and Saurav at number 6. Robin and Ajay are standing next to each other. This means they are at
numbers 4 and 5. This leaves only Venkat at number 2.
1 2 3 4 5 6
Rahul Venkat Sachin Robin/Ajay Ajay/Robin Saurav

59: (c)
Venkat, as can be seen clearly from their standing positions shown above.

60: (d)
Ajays position cannot be determined with certainty from the given information. He can be either at
position 4 or 5. And hence, either Robin or Saurav would be to his right.

Explanations for Q 61 - 63:

As per the information given in the statements, we can draw the following table:

Emile could not have Grey car as she has Grey suit. So,she must be having the White car. Therefore,
Weber is left with Black car and Marx with Grey car.

Marx is not having Blue suit. Since Emile has Grey suit, Marx must be having the White suit. This leaves
Weber with Blue suit.

62: (a)

63: (a)

64: (b)
It is not a must be phenomenon that rural areas will have poorer facilities than urban counterparts.
Thus, option (a) is incorrect.
Option (b) is correct as second line makes this argument quite implicit. It states that services that people
in urban areas take for granted are often simply not available in the countryside.
Option (c) might not be necessarily true as the passage is silent in this regard.
Option (d) is also incorrect, as such an assumption is not made in the passage. Passage only states that,
certain services are taken for granted.

65: (a)
a this inference can be drawn as given fact is that a metro citizen is powerless against dysfunctional
administration . Thus, option (a) is correct option.
b favours and salaries need not be correlated. So option (b) is incorrect.
c coming down of elites is also not implied by the passage. So, option (c) is also incorrect.
d favoritism and people seeking favors are different things. So, option (d) is also incorrect.
66: (a)
a women not being accepted can be linked to patriarchy and identity creation can be linked to names,
attire in strategic manner
b This cannot be directly explained by the passage. So, option (b) is incorrect
c Also, the phenomenon cannot be linked to regional factors. So, option (c) is also incorrect
d the last sentence negates this option.
67: (a)
First paragraph validates the Statement 1. Author says that, history runs out of content in 1947.
Last line of the passage negates the statement 2. Since only statement 1 is correct, the correct answer is
Option (a)
68: (a)
Statement 1 and 2 are correct and are validated from the third sentence of second paragraph of
passage. . It states that, discipline of history deals with the past, while the disciplines of political sciences
and sociology deal with the present. This is a conventional and in many ways logical division
Statement 3 is corroborated from second sentence of first paragraph.
Statement 4 is incorrect. Tone and tenor of the passage does not hold historians solely responsible for
restricting history to the past.
Hence correct answer is Option (a)

69: (c)
Statements 1, 3 and 4 are corroborated from the second paragraph.
Statement 2 is incorrect. According to passage inequality helps in accumulation of human capital.
Hence correct answer is Option (c)

70: (c)
Statement 1 and 2 are corroborated from the first paragraph of the passage.
Statement 3 speaks about inequality whereas question asks importance of equality. Hence correct
answer is Option (c)

71: (c)
Let the present age of Anshul = x years.
Then, his grandfathers present age = x + 50 years.
After 6 years, age of anshul and his grandfather will become x + 6 and x + 56 respectively.
As we know that after 6 years, the sum of their ages is 152, we get:
(x + 6) + (x + 56) = 152
2x + 62 = 152
2x = 90
x = 45 years.
So, the present age of Anshul = 45 years.
And his grandfathers age = 45 + 50 = 95 years.

72: (b)
Option (a) is invalidated by statement 1.
Option (c) is incorrect as one cannot conclude from the give statements that sweat shirts other than
lycra based cannot have hoods.
Option (d) is invalidated by statement 3.
Hence correct answer is Option (b). Some yellow lycra based sweat shirts are displayed is given in 1st
statement. Some have hoods is given in second statement.

73: (d)
The given statements mention nothing about resources. Hence, option (a) can be ruled out.
Option (b) is clearly not correct. Actually, from the given information we cannot draw any conclusive
correlation between Per capita income social indicators.
Option (c) also does not hold true for every state. Stretching the argument to any state will be far
fetched.
Hence, option (d) is correct.

74: (d)
The given statement mentions nothing about cold, hence option (a) can be ruled out easily. Similarly,
nothing has been mentioned about the punctuality of flights in summers. So, option (c) can be
eliminated. Option (b) is incorrect because the statement does not mention anything about damage to
the engines. Option (d) is obviously correct as that is what the given statement implies.

75: (c)
Since loss = 15% and SP = 0.85 CP.
Therefore, CP = 18.7/0.85 = Rs. 22 lakh
17 www.visionias.in Vision IAS
Now, gain = 15% and SP = 1.15 CP
Therefore, SP = 1.15 22 = Rs. 25.3 lakh

Method I:
Make number of toffees equal in both sale and purchase.
6 toffees for Rs 5 is equal to 30 toffees for Rs 25
Similarly, 5 toffees for Rs 6 is equal to 30 toffees for Rs36
Therefore, CP = Rs25, SP = Rs36
Profit = SP CP = 36 25 = Rs. 11
Hence, gain percent = Profit/CP 100 = 11/25 100 = 44%
Method II:
CP = Rs 5/6
SP = Rs 6/5
Gain percent = (6/5- 5/6)/ (5/6) 100 = 44 %

77: (c)
Method I:
Let the required ratio of time be x:y:z
Ratio of investments (capitaltime) = ratio of profits
4x:3y:2z= 5:3:4
Using first two terms, 4x/3y = 5/3
x/y = 5/4
Using last two terms, 3y/2z = 3:4
y/z = 1/2 = 4/8
Hence, x:y:z = 5:4:8
Method II:
If C1: C2: C3 is the ratio of capitals and P1: P2: P3 is the ratio of profits, then
Ratio of time = P1/C1: P2/C2: P3/C3
= 5/4: 3/3: 4/2= 5/4: 1: 2= 5:4:8

78: (a)

Let the length of each train be l metres and their speeds be x m/s and y m/s respectively.
According to the question,
6= l/x ; 3= l/y
Thus, x= I/6 and y =I/3
Thus, x+y= I/6 + I/3= 3I/ 6= I/2.
When they move towards each other, their relative speed will be x+y and total length to be crossed will
be 2l
So, Time to cross each other = total distance/ relative speed= 2l/(x+y)
Now replacing values for x and y we get:
2l/(x+y)= 2I/(I/2)= 4 seconds

Cost price of first set of erasers = Rs. 1/4 per eraser
Cost price of second set of erasers = Rs. 1/5 per eraser
After mixing, cost price of each eraser = (1/4 +1/5) = Rs. 9/40
As per question, selling price of one eraser after mixing = Rs. 1/4
Gain percentage = [(selling price - cost price)/ cost price] 100= [(1/4 - 9/40)/(9/40)] 100= 100/9 %

80: (b)
Method I:
Let x be the gain percentage on the rest of the products.
As no profit or loss occurs, Loss amount = Gain amount
Or 12000 (1/4) (40/100) = 12000 (1-1/4) (x/100)
Or (1/4) (40/100) = (3/4) (x/ 100)
Or x = 40/3 = 13.33% gain
Method II:
Required gain percentage for no profit no loss = a y/ (1-a), where a = fraction of the amount sold for
loss and y = loss percentage.
Thus required gain = (1/4) 40 / (1-1/4) = 10/ (3/4) = 40/3 = 13.33%
Method III:
It is given that, 1/4thpart of the products are sold at 40% loss. Thus, Rs 3000 products are sold at loss.
Total loss= 3000 (40/100)= 1200
Now this loss is to be recovered from remaining sales of Rs 9000.
So profit percentage has to be= (1200/9000) 100= 13.33%
