Shiitala chhai.nyyaa main jhulayi, mayyaa pala naa daara.

Griha griha shakti tumhaarii raajati, puurana sharadha cha.ndra saam saajatii
Visphotaka sii jalata shariiraa, shiitala karata harata saba piiraa.
Maatu shiitalaa, tava shubha naamaa, sabake kaadhe aavahii kaamaa.
Shoka harii, shankarii bhavaanii, baala praana rakshii sukhadaanii.
Suuchi maarjanii kalasha kara raajai, mastaka teja suurya sama saajai.
Chausata yogina sanga me gaavai, viinaa taala mridanga bajaavai.
Nruthyaa naatha bhayaro dhikaraavai, sahasa shesha shiva paara naa paavai.
Dhanya dhanya dhaatrii mahaaraanii, sura nara munii tav suyasha bakhaanii.
Jvaalaa ruupa mahaa bala kaarii, daitya eka vishphotaka bhaarii.
Ghara ghara pravishata koi na rakshata, roga ruupa dharii baalaka bhakshaka.
Haahaakaara macho jaga bhaarii, sakyo naa jaba koi sankata thaarii.
Taba mainyyaa dhari adhbhuta ruupaa, kara gai musal marjhiinii suupaa.
Visphotaka hi pakadii karii liinho, musala prahaara bahu bidhi kiinha.
Bahu prakaara vaha biinatii kiinhaa, maiyyaa nahiin bhala kachhu main kiinhaa.
Aba nahii maatu kaahuu griha jai ho, jaha apavitra vahii ghara rahi ho.
Puujana paatha, maatu jaba karii hai, havaya aananda sakala duhkha harii hai.
Ba bhagat tana shiitala havaya jai he, visphotaka bhaya ghora na sai he.
Shri shiitala hii bache kalyaanaa, bachana satya bhaashe bhagavaanaa.
Kalasha shiitalaakaa karavaavai, vrijase vidhiivata paatha karaavai.
Visphotaka bhaya jihi griha bhaai, bhaje Devi kaha yahii upaai.
Kalasha shiitala ka sajvavey, hwij se vidhivat paat karaave
Tumahii shiitalaa jaga kii maataa, tumahii pitaa jaga ke sukhadaataa.
Tumahii jagaddhaatri sukha sevii, namo namaamii shiitale devii.
Namo suurya karavii dukha haranii, namo namo jaga taarinii dharanii.
Namo namo grahonke bandinii, dukha daaridraa nisa nikhandinii.
Shri shiitalaa shekhalaa bahalaa, gunakii gunakii maatri mangalaa.
Maata shiitalaa tuma dhanudhaari, shobhita panchanaama asavaarii.
Raaghava khara baisaakha sunandana, kara bhaga duravaa kanta nikandana.
Sunii rata sanga shiitalaa maai, chaahii sakala sukha duura dhuraai.
Kalakaa gana gangaa kichhu hoi, jaakara mantra naa aushadhii koi.
Heta maatajii kaa aaraadhana, aura nahii hai koi saadhana.
Nishchaya maatu sharana jo aavai, nirbhaya iipsita so phala paavai.
Kodhii nirmala kaayaa dhaare, andhaa krita nita drishtii vihaare.
Bandhaa naarii putrako paave, janma daridra dhanii ho jaave.
Sundaradaasa naama guna gaavata, lakshya muulako chhanda banaavata.
Yaa de koi kare yadii shankaa, jaga de mainyyaa kaahii dankaa.
Kahata raama sundara prabhudaasaa, tata prayaagase puuraba paasaa.

Namo namo Durge sukh karani,
Namo namo Ambe dukh harani.
Chant the name of Durga, the giver of happiness,
Chant the name of Ambe, the destroyer of sadness.
Nirankar hai jyoti tumhari
Tihun lok pheli ujayari.
Your light is infinite,
And it spreads in all the three realms
Shashi lalat mukh maha vishala,
Netra lal brikuti vikrala.
You have the beauty of the moon and your mouth s wonderful,
Your eyes have a red glow and a stern frown
Roop matu ko adhika suhave,
Daras karat jan ati sukh pave.
This image of your is very beautiful,
Which gives the devotee ultimate happiness to see.
Tum sansar shakti laya kina,
Palan hetu anna dhan dina.
All the powers of the world are in you,
And you look after the world by giving grain (food) and money (wealth).
Annapurna hui jag pala,
Tumhi adi sundari bala.
As Annapurna, the feeding mother, you nurture the universe,
And you are also the timeless young girl of extreme beauty.
Pralaya kal sab nashan hari,
Tum Gauri Shiv Shankar pyari.
You are the destroyer of everything at the end of time,
As Gauri, you are the beloved wife of Lord Shiva.
Shiv yogi tumhare gun gave,
Brahma Vishnu tumhe nit dhyaven.
The God Shiv and all the yogis chant your praise,
Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you.
Roop Saraswati ko tum dhara,

De subudhi rishi munin ubara
You take the form of Goddess Saraswati,
To grant wisdom to the rishis (sages) thus look after them
Dharyo roop Narsimha ko Amba,
Pragat bhayin phar kar kamba.
Goddess Amba, you took the form of Narsimha,
And you broke the pillar.
Raksha kari Prahalad bachayo,
Hiranakush ko swarg pathayo.
You protected Prahalad and saved him,
And Hiranakush (the demon) was granted access to heaven
Lakshmii roop dharo jag mahi,
Shree Narayan ang samahi
You appear in this world in the form of Goddess Lakshmi,
And you are by the side of Lord Narayan.
Ksheree Sindhu karat vilasa,
Daya Sindhu deejay man aasa
Residing on the Sea of Milk
With Lord Vishnu, O Goddess, please fulfill my wishes.
Hingalaj mein tumhi Bhavani,
Mahima amit na jaat bakhani
You are Goddess Bhavani in Hingalaj,
Your glory is brilliant, beyond description.
Matangi Dhoomavati Mata,
Bhuvneshwari Bagala Sukhdata
You are the Goddess Matangi and Dhoomavati,
You are the giver of happiness in the form of Bhuvneshwari and Bagala
Shree Bairav Tara jog tarani,
Chin-na Bhala bhav dukh nivarani.
You end the sorrows of this world,
By appearing in the forms of Bhairavi, Tara and Chinamasta Devi
Kehari Vahan soh Bhavani,
Langur veer chalat agavani
Oh Goddess Bhavani, ever graceful on your steed, the lion,
The brave monkey always welcomes you.
Kar men khappar khadag viraje,
Jako dekh kal dar bhaje.
When you appear in anger with your sword and cupel drawn,
Looking at you, even Time flees in fear
Sohe astra aur trishoola,
Jase uthata shatru hiya shoola
Seeing you with your trident and your magics,

Withen your enemy arises the pangs of fear
Nagarkot mein tumhi virajat,
Tihun lok mein danka bajat
You are there in Nagarkot,
Thus your presence is there in all the three realms.
Shumbhu Nishumbhu Danuja tum mare,
Rakta-beeja shankhan samhare.
You slayed the demons Shumbhu and Nishumbhu,
And killed the thousand forms of the demon Rakta-beeja
Mahishasur nripa ati abhimani,
Jehi agha bhar mahi akulani
When Mother Earth was burdened with the sins
of Mahishasur.
Roop kaaral Kalika dhara,
Sen sahita tum tin samhara
You assumed the dreaded form of Goddess Kali
And killed him and his army.
Pari garha santan par jab jab,
Bhayi sahaya Matu tum tab tab
Whenever the saints were troubled,
You, O Mother, always came to their rescue
Amarpuri aru basava loka,
Tava mahima sab rahen asoka
Amarpuri (divine realm) and all the other worlds,
Under your grace remain forever happy
Jwala mein hai jyoti tumhari,
Tumhen sada pujan nar nari
In Jwala it is your light that burns,
Men and women always pray to you.
Prem bhakti se jo yash gaye,
Dukh-daridra nikat nahin ave
Whoever sings your praise with love and devotion,
Sadness and poverty cannot come near them
Dhyave tumhen jo nar man laee,
Janam-maran tako chuti jaee.
Whoever meditates upon you with his heart and concentration,
Is able to escape this cycle of birth and death.
Jogi sur-muni kahat pukari,
Jog na ho bin shakti tumhari
All the yogis and saints openly say,
That without your power, one cannot merge with the Lord

Kam, krodh jeet sab leenhon
Acharya Shankar performed a penance,
And was able to conquer his desires and anger
Nisidhin dhyan dharo Shanker ko,
Kahu kal nahin sumiron tum ko
Perpetually in meditation of Lord Shiva,

Shakti roop ko maram na payo,
Shakti gayi tab man pachitayo
He did not understand the power that you are,

Please forgive us, O Forgiving Mother,
And shower us with riches and powers which keep us happy
Jab lagi jiyoon daya phal paoon,
Tumro yash mein sada sunaoon,
Whilst I live, may I always be in your grace,
And may I always praise you to all
Durga chalisa jo gaye,
Sab sukh bhog parampad pave
Whoever sings the Durga Chalisa,

Will enjoy all happiness and will attain the highest state upon death

with which he slays the enemies forever.

Tabahin dukh prabhu ap nivara.
Whenever the celestials faced problems and came to you,
You always solved the problems and provided succour to them.

devan sab mili tumhari pukari.
When the demon Tarak wrought havoc,

The celestials all called to you help.
Turat shadanan ap pathayo,

Luv nimesh mahi mar girayo.
Then you immediately sent Sadanand,
Who, within no time at all, destroyed the demon.
Ap Jallandhar asur sanhara,

Suyash tumhar vidit sansara.
You also slayed the demon, Jallandhar,
Your glory is well known to the world.
Tripurasur sang yuddha machayi,

sabahin kripa kari leen bachayi.
By fighting and killing the Demon Tripurasur,
You forgave everybody and saved the Gods.
Keenha tap Bhagirath bhari,

Purahi pratigya tasu purari.
King Bhagirath 1 had performed a rigorous penance,
And by you grace, you fulfilled his wishes.
Darpa chhod Ganga tab ayee,

Sewak astuti karat sadaee.
Because of this, Ganga, left her abode and came to earth,
That is why your devotees always sing your praise.
Ved naam mahima tav gayaee,

akath anadi bhed nahin payee.
The Vedas had tried to describe your glory but the same is beyond explanation,
It is impossible to fathom your full glory.
Pragati udadhi manthan te jwala,

Jare surasur bhaye bihala.
The sea churning 2 had produced such a dreadful poisonous flame,
Which scared both the Gods and demons.
Mahadeva tab kari sahayee,

Neelkantha tuv nam dharayee.
The, Great God, you came to their rescue and drank the poison,
Which stayed in your throat, making it blue, hence you are called Neelkanth
Poojan Ramchandra jab keenha,

Lanka jeet Vibhishan deenha.
When Lord Ram III worshipped you,
You gave him victory over Lanka and made Vibhishan it's king.
Sahas kamal arpanahi vichari,

Keenha pareeksha tabahi purari.
During this worship, Lord Ram decided to offer you a thousand lotus flowers,
Then to assess his firmness of faith, you decided to test him.
Ek kamal Prabhu rakheu goyee,

Kamal nayan poojan chahin soyee.
Lord, you decided to hide one of the flowers,
Not finding it, Lord Ram substituted his lotus like eye for it.

Lord Shanker was pleased with his steadfast devotion,

Getting distressed, I pray to you, Lord Shanker,

Sankat se mohi ani unarau.
Come with your trident and slay my enemies,
And free me from my problems.
Mata pita bhrat sab hoi,

Sankat mein poonchat nahi koi.
Although I have my mother, father, brothers and family,

Yet in times of trouble, nobody offers me help.
Swami ekahi aas tumhari,

Ai harahu sab sankat bhari.
O Lord, you are my only hope,
O Master, please come and take away this heavy burden (problems).
Dhan nirdhan kon det sadaee,

Arat jan ki peer mitaee.
You give wealth to the poor,
And you wipe away their difficulties.

Shambunath ab tek hamari.
I do not know of any other way to seek your help from my problems,

One should worship before an idol of Lord Shiva with full devotion.

And in the end, he will live happily in the kingdom of Lord Shiva.

Ugrasen his lost kingdom.

You killed the demon Narkasur and also the demon Mura; and freed sixteen thousand
maidens who were kept in bondage by Narkasur.

You ate simple vegetables at the house of devotees like Vidur in preference to the rich
fare at Duryodhan's palace.

O Shyama! O compassionate to the poor! Having witnessed your abounding grace and

When Draupadi sought your help by pleading, 'O Lord of the distressed! My honour is at

O Nandalala! You instantly supplied cloth, and the assembly members became ashen
faced with disbelief.

You are, O Kanhaiya, so great a guardian of the helpless orphan that you rescue every
sinking boat from the whirlpool of life.

O Lord! Sundardas, an inmate of the hermitage of Durvasa, beseeches You to grant his

considering that the body is transient, abandon all pride. They should regard the Supreme Lord as the
only reality and the world as insubstantial. Having discovered the truth may the devout hold the
mystical syllable Om, which symbolizes Brahma, in their hearts, for that would lead to self-realization
and salvation. When the flowers of peace and goodwill bloom in the heart, the devotees are blessed
with the fruit fo these forty verses and the Lord becomes favourable to them. To him who reads
Vishnucalisa once everyday the lord of Dvarika (Krsna) provides all the four rewards and the nine divine
