DESIGN CRITERIA
FOR
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Project Description

The project involves construction of utilities net works for new community and its
associated buildings.

1.2 Purpose

The main purpose and the objective is to formulate and finalize technical data,
design assumptions, codes of practice, methods and procedures to be adopted in
concrete structure of this project.

1.3 Scope

The design assumptions and the criteria here in after will be used for the concrete
structural design of AL RAKAH PALACE project located in KHOBAR, Saudi
Arabia.

2.0 CODES AND REFERENCES

All works shall conform to applicable sections of the following listed codes, standards and
reference documents.

3.0 LOADING

3.1 Live Load

3.1.1 Roof Load

Roof live load will be considered to act vertically upon the


horizontal projection of the roof and will conform to the
requirement of the following table for min. roof live loads.

3.1.1.1 Special Purpose Roofs

Roof live load for promenade purposes = 2.87 kn/m2 =


60 psf (ASCE- 4.11.2).

3.1.2 Floor Load

Floor live load will be considered to act vertically upon the


horizontal projection of the floor and will conform to UBC table 16-
A and ASCE table-2 as the following:

3.2 Equipment Load

Equipment load shall be considered as a live load. It shall be computed as per


manufacturer recommendations.

3.3 Dead Load (DL)

3.3.1 Dead Load (Basic):

Weight of all basic materials listed below will be considered.

- Concrete 24 Kn/m 2
- (BLOCK WALL) 200 mm THK. 3.7 Kn/m2
- (BLOCK WALL) 250 mm THK. 4.4 Kn/m2
- (BLOCK WALL) 300 mm THK. 5.1 Kn/m2

3.3.2 Collateral Load:

Collateral Loads can be specified as additional dead loads other than the
material or building framing (basic dead load), such as mechanical and
electrical system and ceiling. The following minimum collateral loads will
be used: -

5.0 DEFLECTION ( y ):

5.1 Immediate Deflection (Serviceability):

= L / 240 For Member Loaded with dead and live load.

5.2 Long Term Deflection

Maximum allowable deflection shall be according to UBC-Table 16-D, Table


16-E and ACI 318-9.5.2.5 as follows:

Unless deflections are computed, the minimum thickness of non pre-
stressed beams or one way slabs shall be as per Table 9.5(a) ACI-318.

5.4 Lateral Drifts

Building lateral drifts shall be limited to the values shown on table below
as per SAES-M-100:

6.0 Materials:

6.1 Reinforced Concrete

6.1.1 Concrete: F'c = (5000 PSI) 350 Kg/cm2 (minimum cylinder


compressive strength @ 28 days)

6.1.2 Reinforcing Steel: Steel Deformed Bars conforming to SASO,


SSA-2/1979 with minimum Yield Strength of 4220 Kg/cm2, ASTM
A615 Grade 60 (Epoxy coated) for all main bars

6.1.3 Reinforcing Steel: Steel Deformed Bars with minimum Yield


Strength of 4220 Kg/cm2 ASTM A615 Grade 60 for stirrups and
ties.

6.1.4 Welded wire fabric in accordance with ASTM A 185; ASTM A479
for deformed wire fabric.

6.1.5 Cement type (I) ordinary Portland cement for reinforced concrete
above ground

6.1.6 Cement type (V) sulphate resistant Portland cement complying


with ASTM C150 shall be used for concrete in contact with and
below the ground level.

6.1.7 Admixtures will comply with ASTM C618, C260, and C494.

6.1.8 ES = 29 x 106 (psi) ACI-318 (8.5.3) & UBC Sec. 1908.5.2

7.0 METHOD OF DESIGN

For reinforced concrete and foundations, the Ultimate Strength Design Method of
the ACI-318 code will be used while for Water Structure Working Stress Design
method of the ACI-350R code will be used.

8.0 STRESSES

8.1 Stresses for Concrete Structures

Concrete

Fc = 5000 psi = 350 kg/cm2

Concrete in tension = 7.5 fc = 37 kg/cm2


Shear = 2 fc = 9.94 kg/cm2

Steel
Fy = 4200 kg/cm2
= 60000 psi

8.2 Stresses for Water Concrete Structures

Concrete

The allowable stresses should be according to ACI-350R as follows:


Concrete in compression = 0.45 fc
Fc = 5000 psi = 350 kg/cm2 = 157 kg/cm2

Concrete in tension = 1.6 fc (pure plain concrete)


Shear = 2 fc = 9.94 kg/cm2

8.3 Stress Increase

All allowable stresses may be increased one-third when considering wind


forces in load combinations of alternate design method (UBC 1612.3.2)
whenever include W.

9.0 DIMENSIONS:

For workability & rigidity reasons, unless required architecturally, the following
minimum dimensions will be followed as per ACI-318:

For fire endurance and fire protection, the minimum concrete cover and
recommended dimensions of concrete elements shall be in accordance with
UBC 1997 Chapter (7) and ACI-216R.

10.0 CALCULATIONS:

Computer calculation shall be conducted by:

- STAAD PRO 2000


- PCA COL
- PROKON Structural Analysis
- Tailored programs such as footing and wall design.

11.0 JOINTS:

Expansion Joints

Maximum building length without joint shall not be more than 60.0 meters
as per PCA (1982). Also, see ACI-224.3R Table 1.2.

Contraction/Control Joints

Contraction/Control joint spacing shall be in accordance with ACI-224.3R

Construction Joints

Construction joints are necessary in most reinforced concrete construction.


Due to their critical nature, they should be located by designer and
indicated on the design drawings. Construction joints shall be as per ACI-
224.3R Clause 3.2.

12.0 PAINTINGS

Concrete structure

The steel reinforcements of concrete structures below grade level need


to be protected from corrosive environmental factors such as moisture,
salt, dust and chemicals. A corrosion protection system for concrete
shall be considered generally as APCS-10 (Bituminous Paint).

13.0 SOIL DESIGN PARAMETERS;

Soil parameters will be considered as per soil investigation report.
