intentionaldiscipleship.
TheAssembliesofGodhereinthePhilippines,forexample,hasgrownnowtomore
than4000churches.Butitismorethanjustnumbers.TheHolySpirits
involvementinthelifeoftheindividualmembersandofthechurchhascausedthe
movementtogrow.Becausewehavediscipleshipinthelocalchurches,wewere
abletoraiseordinarypeopletodotheworksoftheministry.BythegraceofGod,
themovementhasremainedtruetoitspriorityreasonforbeingthatis:
tobeanagencyofGodforevangelizingtheworld,
tobeacorporatebodyinwhichmanmayworshipGod,
andtobeachannelofGodspurposetobuildabodyofsaintsbeing
perfectedintheimageofHisSon.
Ontheotherhand,weknowmuchstillremainstobedone:theharvestremains
plentifulandthelaborersarestillfew.Ifwearetoseethismovementactively
pursuingthefulfillmentoftheGreatCommission,wehavetoseeeveryindividual
churchesdisciplingonpurposeandeveryindividualmembermobilizedfor
ministry,churchplantingandmissions.
WhatDoWeMeanbyEmpoweredLocalChurches?
Churchesthatareempoweredhaveastrongandviablediscipleshipsystemthat
nurturespeopleandtheirrelationshipwithGod,provideopportunitiesforministry
involvementandservice,andhelpsbelieverstoactivelyparticipateinthemissionof
Christ.

UnderstandingDiscipleandDiscipleship
DISCIPLE.AtruediscipleisalearnerandfollowerofJesusChristwhoreflectsHis
teachingandlifestyleandisactivelyreproducingthatpatterninothers...
Thefollowingcangiveusanideaofhowtruediscipleslooklike:
1. Forgiven(1Peter3:1112).Adiscipleisonewhohasrepentedofhissins,
turnedawayfromhissinfullifestyleand,thus,receivedGodspardon.He,in
turn,commitstothelordshipofChristandmakesHimhisabsoluteruler.
2. Founded(Colossians1:23).Adiscipleisonewhosewholelifeisfoundedon
Christ,theSolidRock.HerootshimselfintheunchangingWordofGod;a
doer,notjustheareroftheWordofGod,whodoesnotwaverinfaithbut
withstandslifestormsandtrials.
3. Follower(Matthew16:24).AdisciplecommitstothecauseofChrist.He
hasdeniedhimself,takenuphiscrossandfollowsJesusclosely.Becausehe
subjectshimselftotheLordshipofChrist,hehasdevelopedsensitivityand
discernmenttohearHisvoiceandfollowHisdirections.
4. Fervent(Romans12:11).Adiscipleisverycommittedincarryingoutthe
willoftheMaster.BecausehelaborsfortheMaster,hecountsitagreat
privilegetosufferforHim.
5. Fruitful(John15:8).AdisciplebearsthefruitoftheSpirittheChristlike
characterthatdistinguishesJesusdisciplesfromtherestoftheworld.His
lifeimpactsotherpeoplethattheyarealsodrawntoGodbecauseofthe
gooddeedsthisdisciplehasdemonstratedthroughhislife.Furthermore,a
truedisciplemultiplieshimselftomultiplyingdisciples.
6. FiredUp(Acts1:8).AdisciplelivesaSpiritfilledlifeandhascontagious
passiontoknowGodandmakeHimknown.Hismessageisanointedby
theHolySpiritandburnswiththepassionofreconcilingmenandwomen
backtoGod.
7. Faithful(3John34).AdiscipleisconsistentlycommittedtoChristand
keepshisoilburninguntilthecomingagainofJesus.Herunstheracewith
perseverance,staysawayfromsin,andremainsloyaltoJesustothevery
end.
DISCIPLESHIP.DisciplingistheintentionaldevelopmentofpeopleintoChristian
disciplesthrough...accountability,lovingrelationshipsandpracticalapplicationof
God'sWord.

Discipleshipinlocalchurchesisbestachievedthroughacarefullydesigned
frameworkthatallowspeopletomovefromconversiontobeingtruedisciples.A
discipleshipframeworkmustbe:
SystematicProvidesgraduated,stepbystepprocessthatallowspeopleto
growdeeperintheirrelationshipwithGodandwithothers,intheirministry
aptitudeandinvolvement,andintheirdegreeofcommitment.Also,the
peoplesspiritualprogressmustbemonitored,evaluatedandcelebratedto
furthermotivatethemtodeepentheircommitmentinfollowingChrist.
AggressiveAdiscipleshipframeworkshoulddeliberatelyincludeALL
peopleregardlessoftheparticularleveltheyarein.Achurchorthat
commitstoChristmakesitaMUSTtoleadorjourneywithpeoplethrough
theirspiritualdevelopment.Thus,itwillseektoprovidehelpsforspiritual
growthforpeopleatallstages.
Intentionalthedesignoftheframeworkshouldbeonethathelpsinthe
productionofmultiplyingdisciples.Acarefulandthoroughthinkingshould
bemadeinordertoidentifyteachingcontentandactivitiesthatshouldbe
madeineachofthestagesinthediscipleshipframework.

Case Study 1: The Blessed Church

TheBlessedAssemblyhasjustcelebratedits30thAnniversary.Duringthecelebration,
oldtimememberswerenostalgicastheywereremindedofhowGodhastrulyblessed
themthroughtheyears.Apowerpointpresentationshowcasingimagesfromtheir
foundingyearstothepresentwasdone.Inthesamepresentation,viewerscanseehow
thechurchwentthroughseveralleadershiptransitionsridingalongthechangesin
generations.Thepresentationalsoshowcasedthemilestoneachievementsofthechurch
includingtheconstructionoftheirbuildingandtheexpansionofitsministrieswithinthe
churchandwithinitscommunity.TrulyblessedbythefaithfulnessofGod,BA,joinedby
manyvisitorsandinvitedguests,worshippedtheLordastheythankedHimfor30fruitful
years.
Rightafterthecelebration,theleadershipteamdesiredtorallythechurchtowardsa
moreaggressiveoutreachtothepeopleinthecommunityaresidentialcommunityjust
outsideManila.Theybelievethatthiscanbedonebystrengtheningthediscipleship
systemwithinthechurch.HearingofthePGCAGsIntentionalMovesDiscipleship
Framework,theydecidedtoadoptthesystemandstartedworkingonhowtheycan
mobilizetheirmembersforministryandmissions.
AkeyelementinadoptingtheIMisthestrategicplanningwhichaimstohelpdiscover
strategicinitiativesonhowtoblendIMwiththeexistingprogramsandactivitiesofthe
church.Inthisplanning,theteamassessedtheministriesofthechurchanddiscovered
severalissuesthatmayaffecttheimplementationofIMintheirchurch.Oneofthe
crucialissuesthatsurfacedduringtheplanningwasthefactthattherehasbeena
numberofnurturingministriesinthechurch.Throughtheyears,thechurchhas
implementedthetraditionalfellowships(CA,WM,MM,etc),hasBiblestudies,cell
groups,andhousechurchcelebrations.Yet,despiteallthese,theleadershipteam
stronglyfeelsthatonlyaverysmallpercentageofthechurchmembersarereally
discipledandmobilizedforministryandmissions.Anotherissuethatcameoutofthe
planningisthemanyactivitiesundertakenbyitsdepartmentsthatmakethescheduling
ofactivitiesdifficult.Thedepartmentheads,whoarealsopartoftheleadershipteam,
haveimplementedmanyprogramsandactivitieswithintheirrespectivedepartments
thathavetakenmuchofthepeoplestime.TheideaofthechurchimplementingIM
soundsgoodbuttheyfearthatthiswillbeaddedjustasanotheractivityontopofthe
manyotheractivitiesinthechurch.
Case study 2: All About Christ AG

AllAboutChristAG(AAC)ispioneeredintheheartofabustlingurbancenterwhere
manypeoplefromtheprovinceschoosetolivebecauseofemployment.Theurban
centerisalsoaneducationalhubwheremanycollegesanduniversitiesarelocated.
Becauseofthis,PastorJohnbeganhischurchplantingeffortsbypenetratingschoolsand
reachingouttothestudents.Injustfewmonths,hewasabletogatherpeoplewho
serveasthecoreoftheAAC.Althoughstudents,PastorJohnbelievethattheycanbe
raisedtobecomeleadersofthechurch.
WhiledoingBiblestudiesamongstudents,PastorJohnbecameconnectedwiththe
parentsofthestudentsandstartedBiblestudieswiththemaswell.Hewassoexcited
withthisnewdevelopmentinhisministry.However,theendofschoolyearcameandhe
hadtoletgoofsomeofhisstudentleadersinordertogobacktotheirrespective
hometowns.Thismadehimrealizetheneedtodohisbesttodisciplethestudentswhile
theyarestillwithhim.Also,hesawanopportunitythattheycouldbemissionariesand
reachouttotheirfamily,theirfriendsandthepeopletheywillworkwithinthefuture.
Whenevaluatingallthesedevelopments,PastorJohnrealizedthattheministryis
confrontedwiththesechallenges:thereachingoutofstudents,thereachingoutto
families,themeansofequippingthatwillempowerthemtobemissionariestotheir
familiesandworkplaces,andthestabilityofthechurchespeciallywhenstudentleaders
comeandgo.

Case Study 3: The Conservative Pentecostal AG

PastorStephenisthenewpastoroftheConservativePentecostalAG(CPAG).His
predecessor,PastorMark,whowashisseniorpastorfor7years,wasaverycharismatic
manandhasbuiltawonderfulrelationshipamongthemembersofthechurch.Pastor
Mark,knownastheactionman,establishedmanyBiblestudiesalloverthisparticular
suburbancommunity.Hedidnumeroushouseandhospitalvisits,openedmoreBible
studiesandcarriesouthisotherassignmentsintheministerialfellowshipofthis
particularmunicipality.PastorMarkwassohandsonwithchurchministriesthatheis
practicallyinvolvedinalmosteveryministryofthechurch(whilejugglinghismanyother
responsibilities).WhenPastorMarkfeltGodwasleadinghimtopioneerachurch
somewhereelse,heturnedovertheleadershipofthechurchtoPastorStephen.
WithallduerespecttoPastorMark,PastorStephenrealizedthatifhecontinuesthestyle
ofministryofPastorStephen,theministrywillbecenteredonhimandwillnotgrow
beyondhiscapacity.Also,hebelievedthatheistoempowerpeopletodotheworksof
theministryandshouldnotattempttodoeverything.Furthermore,heunderstoodthe
importanceoftheirchurchbeingmobilizedtoplantchurchesinthenearbybaranggays
andthemunicipalities.Hefirmlybelievesthatthereisnowaytogobutthisdirection.
PastorStephen,althoughoverwhelmedwiththeresponsibilityofleadingCPAG,believes
thatchangeisnecessaryandisverytimely.However,heknewthathemayhavesome
resistancefromsomememberswhothinkthatministryistobedonebythepastoralone
andnotreallytobesharedamongthelaypeople.
