County employees
REED CITY The Osceola
County Board of Commission-
ers voted unanimously to man-
date employee identification
badges for all county workers
at their meeting Monday, June
20.
The deadline for all depart-
ments to comply is set for July
31. While the policy originally
dictates only hired employees
to wear name badges, there
was discussion to extend it to
elected officials.
I feel a deadline will make
it a firm request, said District
6 commissioner Pam Wayne.
This is part of making the
county buildings more secure
and employees safer.
The badge policy extends to
contractors and temporary
staff with assignments of 12
weeks or more.
In other business, the Mari-

program meal site.
The Eagles entered into con-
tract with the county in Octo-

$16,583.48 was brought forth,
recommended and approved

Evart dairy farm hangs tough in cyclical business

EVART If a person makes hay when
the sun shines, the day was designed for
non-haying activities. Doug Wirth sat in his
office while rain poured down from above
and thunder rumbled across the verdant
fields of Osceola County.
The areas fields and pastures with hay
fields and holsteins tell a story even a
novice can read. Michigan is a dairy state.
Ernie Birchmeier, livestock and dairy spe-
cialist with Michigan Farm Bureau, said
the Wolverine State is home to 1,800 dairy
farms and 430,000 dairy cows. Osceola
County alone is home to about 40 dairy
farms and some 7,000 dairy cows.
Wirth farms some 2,000 acres of rural
countryside with his sons, Jacob and An-
drew. The trio uses rainy days to fix and
repair equipment and work on projects the
storms wont hamper, the elder Wirth said.
In the milking parlor nearby, employees
were busy milking. Cows stood patiently at
their stanchions waiting. They knew the
drill. Some activities go on rain or shine.
Still, the holsteins giving their milk had
no idea June is National Dairy Month, a
designation with roots dating back to 1937.
The Wirths knew, though. Such marketing
strategies are not lost on them. The knowl-
edge changed nothing about their daily
routine.
Together with a handful of employees,
the Wirths milk 820 cows every day of the
week. A steady stream of holsteins files
through the milking parlor; the animals
are milked three times a day.
Roots run deep in the Osceola County
hills. The Wirth family has been farming
the home place for 130 years now.
Things are different now than they were
in the past, though. The Wirths sold milk to
Yoplait for 30 years until the company be-
gan buying from a different supplier. When
Dean Foods closed its Evart facility, local
dairy farmers certainly werent helped any,
Wirth said.
Shifting demographics have hurt farm-
ers in this area. Michigan just doesnt have
the milk-buying population it once did.
Plus, even though fewer dairy farms dot
the countryside than in years past, milk
production has been increasing. Give the

nances for tall grass, trash
and vehicles though out the

SCAM WARNING
Scammers claiming to
be from the Pon Research
Group LLC who claim to
be affiliated with a mys-
tery shopper association
send a check to you in the
mail. You are instructed
to send a text message, to
a number based in New
York State, confirming you
received the check and
your location. Your are
then instructed to cash the
check and retain some of
the money for yourself but
to pass on the remaining
money to another individ-
ual. The check is fraudu-
lent claiming to be writ-
ten from the Texas Trust
Credit Union. The rout-
ing number on the check
is also fraudulent. You are
advised the only way to get
a hold of Lisa is by text
due to her busy schedule.
If you receive one of these
checks and letters in the
mail do not cash the check
or text the number and
dispose of the letter and
fraudulent check.
Officers were dispatched
downtown to a back park-
ing lot regarding a fight in
process. Officers arrested
a 21-year-old female on
charges of disturbing the
peace. An ambulance was
called to transport a __ year
old male to the hospital for
a head injury. The man had
tried to separate the fight
and was injured in the pro-
cess. A warrant request on
the 21-year-old female was
sent over to the Prosecut-
ing Attorneys Office for
review.
Officers were dis-
patched to local residence
regarding a suspicious sit-
uation late in the evening.
The caller stated there was
a vehicle in her driveway
when she returned home
for the evening. She took
down the license plate as
the vehicle left. Officers
ran the license plate and
found there was no record
of it. Officers continued to
patrol the area throughout
the night with no further
incidents.
Officers were dis-
patched to a report of a
fawn running loose in the
city. The responding officer
observed the fawn and fol-
lowed it advising the com-
munity not to try to catch
it. Once it laid down in a
flower patch, officers clear
ed the scene. If you see
a fawn do not pick it up or
try to catch it. The mother
leaves it alone for its safety.
Officers were dis-
patched to local residence
regarding a vehicle that
had swerved toward the
callers daughter while
she was riding her bike.
Upon officers arrival, the
father who had made the
911 call, said the driver re-
turned to apologize and ask
if the girl was OK. Officers
cleared and patrolled town
to locate the described ve-
hicle.

Officers were requested
to respond and run a vehi-
cle identification number
on a newly purchased used
vehicle. The new owner
expressed some concerns
over the title paperwork
authenticity. The officer
found no record for the ve-
hicle and advised the man
to find out if the vehicle
had been titled in a differ-
ent state.
Officers were dis-
patched to local business
to respond to a hold-up
alarm. Upon their arrival,
the manager told the offi-
cers an employee had bent
down to get something and
leaned against the hold-up
alarm button by mistake.
Officers were dis-
patched to local retail busi-
ness regarding an upset
customer who felt she and
her grandson were treated
poorly by the store man-
ager. The officer spoke with
the manager and the em-
ployees and found the situ-
ation was not criminal but
rather a civil matter. Nei-
ther party wanted to take
the matter any further nor
press any charges, officers
cleared.

pus hospital regarding a

of fraudulent activity that

traffic stop, officers found
the 31-year-old female was
operating while under the
influence of liquor. In ad-
dition to failing the field
sobriety test, officers found he used it to take his trash

to US 10 where there had
