TECH THAT!
Technology has made inroads into every aspect of our lives today. If
you watch any of the many cooking competition shows that seem to
have overtaken our television programming, you will see why Indian
consumers are warming up to the use of kitchen appliances. Considering
our contemporary lifestyles, they would certainly make it convenient
for time-challenged users to cook and clean. The increase in disposable
income has also led to the aspirations for conveniences that were earlier
considered inessential or luxuries. Consequently, in addition to providing
space for the immense storage required for Indian cooking, interior
designers have to allot space for gadgets as well.
Well-travelled consumers are also driving the design change. Exposed
to international trends and products, they are asking for open kitchens
and island counters that facilitate shared experiences of cooking and
dining. With modular kitchens becoming popular, microwave ovens,
ovens, coee machines and dishwashers are gaining acceptance.
As Jurgen Wolf, MD, Hfele India, observes in our feature on kitchen

ARE DESIGNED of other products have not only made bathrooms more luxurious, but
also set benchmarks with their innovative technology.
The most dramatic way in which technology is aecting us, however,
is in the way our built structures are designed. New materials and
methods enabled by technological breakthroughs are giving our
architects and designers fresh grist for their mill. A case in point is
the transformation of a garage space by the architectural intervention
undertaken by Nudes, led by Nuru Karim. The intervention explored
a diamond panel skin system studded with laser-cut acrylic
reective mirror discs, and the design process included digital design
methodologies including digital fabrication techniques all of which is
easily possible thanks to innovation in technology.
Our take on the subject: Lets embrace technology, but use it wisely.

The use of y-ash cement blocks for eternal wall con-

struction enables temperate dierence of atleast oC to 6oC
between eteriors and interiors the site being in the one of
the etreme climatic conditions. This helps not only during
hot summers, but also during cold winters. The Brick Bat
Coba technique with re clay brick tiles eciently laid over
the roof of the buildings provides heat insulation from the
top a system that again adds to the thermal comfort.
An interesting factor in this Green township is its strategi-
cally-placed landscape islands interlaced between the many
villas and apartments.
The entire masterplan allows for ample green spaces, most
of which have been covered with local trees and planta-
tions. The green cover of about 5,,sq-ft contains lawns,
bushes, shrubs, hedges and a variety of trees. The entire
4 periphery of the land mass has been bordered with a variety
of Neem trees which not only provide visual privacy, but
also cut o the noise and air pollution, especially from the
main approach road. The main road has been edged with
owering trees at the entrance such as Gulmohur, Silver
Oak, Ashok Pendula, Alostonia Scholraris, etc adding to
the overall green ambience of the township.
nternal green spaces larger ones, too, have been studded
with these trees. The ground cover plantations like Golden
Duranta have been used for road dividers, while shrubs
like Aschilfa Godesna and icasa Panda are planted in and
around the villas and apartments green spaces.
Apart from the above, two types of lawns are planned,
viz., organised green lawns and informal green areas. The
garden spaces between the cluster of buildings are provided
5 with garden furniture, paved jogging track, childrens play
equipment and other child-centric amenities. Lawns, gar-
treated through the sewage treatment plant, converting dens and walkways have been well-lit through garden bol-

THE CONCEPT: DIAMONDS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND

The project explores an adaptive reuse transformation of a car garage into a micro architectural
insertion. The existing structure was demolished to design a micro skylit architectural intervention
which could absorb a beautiful existing tree hovering above the structure. Measuring approximately
350sq-ft, the space houses a styling salon offering hair and make-up services. The design plan
visualised an open space with styling stations, backwash stations, pedicure services and related hair
and make-up products on display.
The architectural intervention explored a diamond panel skin system studded with laser-cut acrylic
reflective mirror discs, two inches in diameter. The design process included digital design methodologies
including digital fabrication techniques. The diamond encrusted panels reflect the immediate
neighbourhood and create a pixellated reflective
interface to the customer arrival experience.
The system is defined as follows:
ACP box with apertures CNCd on the surface.
Unique cartesian coordinates for each point is
defined by PVC tubes in order to formulate the form
of the diamond.
These points in space are then encrusted with
reflective laser-cut acrylic discs to complete the
diamond panel.
The diamond panels are then assembled as per
the design configuration and site conditions to
complete the assembly.

The importance of sustainability as an inseparable part of
design practices was next in line for discussion. Stating that
Indian middle class values are the most sustainable, Rao
elaborated on the advantages we have as a country mainly
because of the values imbedded in our society. It is possible to
maximise the positive and sustainable results out of even the

The panelists also spoke about the importance of commu-

FOCUS LAMINAM
INSTALLATION BY ARCHITECT ANUPAMA KUNDOO
Anupama Kundoos Building Knowlegde: An inventory of strategies installation at the Arsenale
investigates the processing of knowledge behind the act of building, discussing the dualities to be
integrated rather than battled with. Kundoos project takes over an entire room in the Arsenale: at
the centre is the full-scale construction of an affordable ferrocement housing unit that can be built
in just six days using Lego-like blocks accompanied on one side by models of her most famous
completed buildings and, on the other, by examples of the principal materials used in her projects.
To create the Full Fill Homes model, which will be installed inside the Arsenale for the duration
of this years Venice Biennale, Kundoo brought skilled stone masons from India together with
engineers from Germany. As with several of the architects previous projects, the full-scale house
showcases the potential uses of ferrocement a material made by layering mortar or plaster over
metal mesh. According to Kundoo, this engineered material offers a wealth of opportunities for
architects, but is particularly well suited for creating flexible and cost-efficient housing solutions in
India and elsewhere.
Kundoo, being a profound expert and practitioner of ceramics, has chosen Laminam slabs
because she appreciates their innovation and the different possibilities of application offered by
their perfect planarity, large size and minimum thickness. In particular, to complete her installation,
she selected Calce series for its ability to represent and recall the cement look that she was giving
to the whole project. The new Calce finish slabs are available in both standard 1000x3000x3mm
size, ideal for vertical wall covering, and in the new 1620x3240x12mm size, intended for horizontal
5 surfaces such as kitchen, bathroom or table tops. Soft materials with a strong contemporary spirit
and icon of a sophisticated design, the Calce collection includes a range of pale colours and delicate
nuances inspired by wet plaster and industrial concrete. It is available in six different colours:
Avorio, Bianco, Grigio, Tortora, Antracite and Nero.
Laminam Calce Tortora slabs were selected by Kundoo to create the physical landscape
displaying the inventory of her most innovative projects: on one hand, 40 plinths covered with
3+mm thick slabs show the fruits of the investigations (as 1:50 sectional models) and on the other,
six tables with 12mm thick tops display the roots of research and experimentation (the 1:5 scale
tectonic models alongside actual material samples that distinguish the architectural vocabulary
of the designer). To enter the Full Fill Home, that demonstrates her current architectural work in
process, three steps have been covered with 3+mm thick slabs, the same used for the four benches

In its most spectacular expressions, usually designed by

the so-called archistars, architecture is obviously dominated
by the capitalist market which is not always interested in
the needs of the largest portion of the Earths population.
Urban icon buildings gather value and attract interest.
They are defining metropolitan scenarios and visually charac-
terising the landscape of global metropoleis often subject to
instant urban growth with consequent risk of sameness and
loss of identity. There is no doubt that a fundamental role, in
this search for the spectacular, is entrusted to technology that
allows spatial and formal researches until now inaccessible.
Thus, technology is no longer the means to achieve the im-
provement of living conditions but it becomes the ultimate
goal of our research. It turned from being a tool to achieve
results to an ontological end in itself.
A confirmation of this assertion comes from some of
the latest digital experiments in architecture, where the 8
obsessive geometric/structural investigation often seems to
replace a theoretical content still engendered by the search
for solutions to human problems as generative force of
architectural research.
Therefore, considering these assumptions, it seems that
the human being is no longer the primary subject towards
which architecture is looking.
Well, no. This year, the biennale demonstrates exactly
the opposite. In the two traditional venues, Giardini and
Arsenale, and in countless other locations scattered around
Venice, the exhibited projects all have a common goal: the
intention to act as a solution to problems that affect social
and environmental issues.
From large-scale urban redevelopment proposals to dar-

which is now open to the public.
The Danish architect formed the structure
out of fibreglass blocks, stacking them in such a way that
the entire pavilion constantly morphs through shapes as
visitors move around it.
I think we tried to make a structure that, in an effortless
way, combines a lot of differences, said Ingels at the open-

SUMMER HOUSES
Kunle Adeyemi, Asif Khan, Yona Friedman along with
Barkow Leibinger have each designed a Summer House
to accompany the Serpentine Gallery, taking inspiration
from the original Queen Carolines Temple in Kensington
Gardens, designed by architect William Kent in the early
18th century.
The results feature a version of the building turned
inside out and a structure made out of curled wood, as well
as a maze of modular wireframes and a secluded courtyard
designed to reflect sunlight.
Nigerian architect Adeyemi designed his building by dis-
torting the form of the temple, creating what he describes
as an inversion. It shares the same proportions, but is much
more simple in its overall shape. We were fascinated by
the form and the proportions of the temple, and basically
looked at it and played around with it, he said.

Based in Detroit, designer and artist Nina Cho creates furniture and
