Practice

1. A train pulls out of a station and accelerates steadily for 20 s until its speed reaches
8.0 m/s. It then travels at a constant speed for 90 s, and then it slows down steadily
to rest in a further time of 30 s to reach the next station.

(a) Calculate the acceleration and the displacement travelled in each part of the
journey.
(b) Calculate the average velocity for the journey.

2. A car travelling 56.0 km/h is 24.0 m from a barrier when the driver slams of the
brakes. The car hits the barrier 2.00 s later.

(a) What was the automobiles constant acceleration before impact?

(b) How fast was the car travelling at impact?

3. A stone is thrown from a bridge with an initial speed of 4.0 m/s. How long does it
take the stone to hit the water 15 m below if: a) the stone is thrown down? b) the
stone is thrown up?

4. A steel ball is dropped from a roof and passes a window, taking 0.125 s to fall from
the top to the bottom of the window, a distance of 1.2 m. It then falls to a sidewalk
and bounces (perfectly elastic) back past the window, moving from bottom to top in
0.125 s. Assume that the upward flight is an exact reverse of the fall. The time the
ball spends below the bottom of the window is 2.00 s. How tall is the building?
{Answer 20.4 m}

5. A ball is thrown straight up from the edge of the roof of a building. A second ball is
dropped from the roof 1.00 s later. You may ignore air resistance. If the height of the
building is 20.0 m, what must the initial speed of the first ball be if both are to hit the
ground at the same time?
