1) Measure, Model, and Convert

(2) 5th Grade
(3) Suggested group size: Groups of two
(4) Subject: Mathematics
(5) Standard: (5)3.2 measure, compare, and convert length to the closest
decimal unit of milli-, centi-, kilo-, and meters [NS 3.4.2]
(6) Objective: Students will understand how to use a measuring tape or
ruler to determine the dimensions of classroom furniture in meters,
centimeters, and millimeters and how to convert between units.
(7) Materials needed to facilitate the lesson:
Measuring tapes
Ruler
Calculators
Construction paper
Straws
Popsicle Sticks
Scissors
Glue
Tape
10cm x 10cm cardboard squares
(8) Procedures:
1. Teacher will pair students in groups of two
2. Students will choose one item of classroom furniture to measure from
the following options: desk, chair, bookshelf, or table.
3. Students will work with their partner to measure the height, length, and
width of their chosen object in centimeters using a measuring tape. They
will record the measurements on a sheet of paper.
4. The students will then convert their measurements from centimeters to
meters using the conversion factor: 100 centimeters= 1 meter. Convert to
millimeters using the conversion factor: 10 millimeters= 1 centimeter.
Answers should be written on their paper.
5. Students will work with their partner to construct a miniature version of
their chosen object using the listed materials above.
6. After completing their miniature version, students will use a ruler to
measure the height, length, and width of their object in centimeters.
Measurements should be recorded on same paper.
7. Students will convert their measurements from centimeters to meters
and millimeters. Answers should be written on their paper.
8. Students will then compare and contrast the real objects measurements
and their miniature versions measurements.
(9) Assessment: Students will be graded on the accuracy of their
measurements and conversions. The assignment will be worth a total of
100 points. They will turn in their paper with the recorded measurements
and conversions. Each measurement or conversion will be worth 5 points.
They should have recorded the height, length, and width of the classroom
furniture and the measurements for their miniature construction in
centimeters for a total of six measurements (30 points). Students should
have six conversions from centimeters to meters and six conversions from
centimeters to millimeters (60 points). Students must show conversion
work for full credit. 2.5 points will be given to conversions without showing
work. The miniature piece of furniture will also be turned in for 10 points
for participation and creativity.
