Regional Medical Officer (RMO) (Physician)

This position is within the Office of Volunteer Support (OVS) and located in Africa.

Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Provides medical and administrative support to Peace Corps Medical Officers


(PCMOs) at sub-regional posts. Demonstrates best practices, procedures and
quality assurance.

2. Provides medical consultative services to Peace Corps Volunteers/Trainees


(PCVs/PCTs) and Peace Corps Response Volunteers through the PCMO at sub-
regional posts. Assists as needed in the provision of clinical care and health
education to PCVs.

3. Manages Regional Medical Evacuation Site (RMES). Oversees the care of


medically- evacuated PCVs. Identifies quality health care providers and facilities.
Develops regional medevac procedures for use by PCMCs and referral providers.
Acts as the primary liaison between the PCV and regional health care providers.

4. Manages logistics for PCVs requiring medical evacuation, either to a RMES, to


the United States, or to another location. In consultation with the referring PCMO
and OVS, determines or provides accompaniment if indicated. Updates referring
PCMO and OVS on significant changes in status of the evacuated Volunteer.
Provides written summary on all medically evacuated PCVs including clinical
findings and response to treatment.

5. Provides guidance to sub-regional PCMOs regarding the appraisal of local


medical resources throughout the sub-region.

6. Assists in the mentorship of new PCMOs.

7. In consultation with Chief of Clinical Programs/OVS, Country Directors (CDs)


and PCMOs, determines schedule for periodic visits (at least annually) to sub-
regional countries. Submits country site assessment reports.

8. Advises staff on appropriate regional public health issues. Coordinates with


OVS on fiscal matters related to Volunteer health care.

9. Represents OVS in accordance with its policies and procedures.

10. Communicates with sub-regional PCMOs, OVS and the Region regarding
relevant health and medical administrative matters.

11. Maintains clinical competency and licensure through Peace Corps-sponsored


Continuing Medical Education opportunities and accredited independent study.
SUPERVISION AND GUIDANCE PROVIDED:

The RMO’s scope of practice is limited to PCVs/PCT and Peace Corps Response
Volunteers.

The RMO is under the direct administrative supervision of Chief of Clinical


Programs/OVS.
