Hubert
“Boo Boo” Thompson, 28,
was ordered held at the Du-
Page County Jail on $3 mil-
lion bond Saturday. He sur-
rendered peacefully late Fri-
day after holing up in his
apartment for nearly seven
hours while police SWAT
teams surrounded the apart-
ment building.
Police found James Malo-
ne, 66, sprawled on the
tt below the balco-
ny when they arrived at the
scene around 1:45 p.m. CDT.
He was pronounced dead
way and threw him to his
death three stories below.
DuPage County State’s
Attorney Joseph Birkett told
the Daily Herald it was al-
leged to have been an unpro-
voked act and that Thomp-
son’s mental health will be
evaluated.
A high school All-Amer-
ican from Hillsdale, Il,
Thompson came to MSU
in 1997 but was academi-
cally ineligible his first two
seasons. He was named the
Spartans’ most-improved
player for the 1999 season,
playing 10 games and start-
ing the last four. After being
ejected the Citrus Bowl on
Jan. 1, 2000, for fighting, he
declared himself eligible for
the NFL Draft that spring.
Thompson went undraft-
ed, but the New Orleans
Saints signed him a few days
after the draft. He was cut
after just two days of prac-
tice, the Chicago Tribune re-
ported. He also played for
the Chicago Enforcers of the
now-defunct XFL in 2001.
Lombard police said they
arrested Thompson in No-
vember 2003 on domestic
battery charges. He pleaded
guilty March 4, 2005, and
was placed on conditional
