 1. Introduction
Food processing is defined as the transformation of raw ingredients, by
physical or chemical means into food. Nestle, a company in Trinidad and
Tobago, is found on Churchill Roosevelt Highway which is a transnational
company which caters processed goods which includes juices, milk products
and much. Nestle is the largest company which produces goods and have been
serving customers for more than 100 years. Nestle has been founded in 1866
by Henri Nestle. In 1957 the Nestle and Angelo Swiss condense milk company
commenced its operation in Marine Square, Port-Of-Spain but then changed
location to Churchill Roosevelt Highway because of various benefits of the
company. There are many factors that influence the location of Nestle. Some
of the factors include the relief of land, markets, raw materials and even
labour.

 4. Methodology
4.1 How was the data collected?
The class discuss along with the teacher factors influencing the
location of the site. A questionnaire was collected from each student
consisting of 10 question each based on the factors influencing
nestle. Consent forms were given out by our teacher to attend nestle
and the transport was organized. The questioner was then adjusted
and copied (refer to appendix).

On arriving to the study site we were ushered by Mrs. Redhead to

the conference room and she informed us about Nestls history via
an audio/visual presentation. Students were then given the chance
to ask questions while the answers were recorded. A tour of the
company was done while photographs were taken and observations
were recorded

The data was also obtain from secondary sources such as textbooks
atlas internet maps and the dictionary
4.2 When was data collected?
Data was collected on the 4th July, 2016 between the hours of 9am to
1pm.

4.3 Where was the data collected?

Nestle Trinidad and Tobago Limited located at Churchill Roosevelt
Highway, Valsayn Trinidad. It is located north of Caroni River at the
foothill of the Northern range (Refer to Maps 1 and 2).
5. PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS OF DATA AND DISCUSSION
Nestl is situated on 25 acres of flat land which has lots of space for expansion.
This however is beneficial to them in such a way that their admin office
production house and waste water plant treatment are close by eliminating
the need to leave the compound (Refer to Figure 1). Due to the excess use and
the high demand for water they own 2 wells at the central location which
pumps water from 50ft wells.
Raw materials are received locally, regionally and internationally. About 19,000
litters of fresh milk daily is produced daily from 150 local dairy farmers. Other
local materials are peanut butter from Natural Canners Limited and cardboard
trays from the Caribbean Packaging Industries. Since water is in demand and is
always needed they have wells that are 500 feet underground from which
water is extracted. Regionally, sugar is sent from Guatemala as well as
Columbia, orange and grape fruit concentrate is imported from Belize and also
straws are received from Columbia. Internationally apple concentrate is from
Poland, skim milk power imported from Germany and New Zealand and Tetra
Pak paper is received from Brazil (Refer to Figure 2).
Nestle, Trinidad and Tobago Limited has 528 workers which consists of 95%
skilled and semi-skilled while 5% are unskilled. Their skilled workers are made
up of IT technicians, lab technicians, food technologists and chemist however
the semi-skilled are secretaries, telephone operators and accountants. The
unskilled are the cleaners\janitors. At Nestle there are 60% males and 40% are
females (Refer to Figure 3). The employees come from various areas of the
country. The above workers are provided with easy access with bus route
being close by. Additionally, their working hours are a 24hr working period
from 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 10pm and 10pm to 6am. However the office
workers hours are 8am to 4:30pm.

Nestl transport their goods via land, sea and air. They own 12-14 delivery
trucks, forklifts and tankers to obtain milk from local farmers (Refer to Figure
4). The tankers can hold up to 19,000 litres of milk. The roads are in relatively
good condition which allows the company to collect its raw materials easily.
Nestle is perfectly located at the intersection of major highways that are linked
to major sea ports such as Port of Spain and Point Lisas which are used . They
however are not affected by any change of the recent highway development
since they have their own private roads.

A range of equipment and machinery at Nestle is utilized to ensure
that the production process occurs efficiently. Some of the
equipment was bought from Tetra Pak in Brazil and Sweden.
Equipment used such as the UHT the Ultra High Temperature which
is used to sterilize at 140 degree for 3-5 seconds, straw applicators,
tankers and forklifts (Refer to Figure 5). They also own two
generators on the compound as well as the direct supply from Point
Lisas which benefits them seeing that their machines need to have a
constant supply of power and in case of any power shortage. They
also have a flood control indicator to detect rise at the St. Joseph
River so they can be warned if the level of river is rising.

daily since their products are high in demand. The products are distributed
daily since their roads are in good condition. Nestle is perfectly located at the

 Nestle Trinidad and Tobago market their goods locally
and regionally. Their chain of distribution is from the factory however when
the products are made they put them into trays of the truck then goes to the
warehouse and places such as Primary, mass stores and more. Additionally
they market their goods to all caricom countries (refer to figure6) except
Barbados due to the trade expectation like, if the country is making product
the item is not exported. They although use the technique of absorbing vat.
Nestle has products such as orchards orange juice, grape fruit, apple cherry, milo, party mix, mauby
and more (refuretp figure 7)

6. Conclusion
In conclusion there are many factors influencing Nestls location and to obtain
this a questioner was constructed to obtain data. The factors that Influence
nestle are relief of land, raw materials, labour, transport/machinery, markets,
products and the environment. Nestle which is located at the foothills of the
northern range on flat relief of land where construction can be easily done,
Raw materials can be obtain both locally and regionally also internationally.
Labour the location of nestle is convenient to the workers due to the factories
being close to the high way. Products are transported by land, air and sea and
the company is highly mechanized so that products are easily made.

A large variety of their goods are sold regionally and locally. Nestle is also
situated where the ports is not hard to access so there is no issue in importing
and exporting their materials. The physical environment is close so that the
water can be released and It is concluded that nestle Trinidad and Tobago is
well off located at Churchill Roosevelt highway, valsayn, Trinidad and Tobago
due to the above mentioned points
