1 Introduction

1.1 Target Audience/Purpose/Scope:


This document is targeted configuration of Openfiler NAS solution for ESXI-Network File
System(NFS):

*If you not completed Installation Open File NAS solution, go to the Openfiler Installation
Posting.

1.2 Scope of the document:


Cover only Openfiler System Configuration, Security Access Control, and Create New Datastore
Share, Mount Newly Create Datastore to ESXI Hosts.

1.3 Prerequisite requirements


Openfiler ISO 2.99 -www.openfiler.com
VMware Workstation 10x or Oracle Virtual Box.
Min CPU, RAM and Disk requirements
CPU x 1, RAM 256 to 512 MB, and Disk 10 G depending how many NFS NAS data store x
ESXI 5.0 and up host.

2 OpenFiler Perquisite Configuration VMware


Workstation 10 Settings
2.1.1 Openfiler VMware Workstation 10 Settings
We will provide illustration of the a graphical installation steps for OpenFiler:

I..E VMware workstation 10 VM setting illustrates 4 Hard Drives.


Hard drive 1 = 10G Openfiler NAS OS
Hard drive 2= 500 G NFS Datastore Share
Hard drive 3= 500 G NFS Datastore Share
Hard drive 4= 200 G NFS Datastore Share
Min Memory required 512 MB(recommended)

Openfiler NAS identify Drives 1, 2, 3, and 4 as SCSI devices. Drive 2,3 and 4
will be provisioned as NFS Data store.

If you need allocate additional storage space to the virtual hard disks to the virtual
machine provide additional storage space for the NFS and iSCSI data. You can do this
while the virtual machine is powered and Open filer will detect them automatically.

3 Openfiler NAS Configuration
3a. Log into Openfiler Web Admin Console:
https://<IP DHCP>:446
I.E: https://192.168.2.26:446

Openfiler Web Admin Console.

2b. Note you will get Untrusted Error Message, "There is a problem with this website's
security certificate" or "Connection is Untrusted", and required to add
Exception(Firefox) or connect to this website(I.E).

4 Openfiler Network Access Control List
4.1 Enable NFS and ISCSI services . Below illustrates how to enable NFS and iSCSI for ESXi.
Click on enabled and started on specific services want to enable and start. For example,
NFS and ISCSI Target. As we will be covering creating in the next sections.

4.2 Configure Network Security Access Control which ESXI hosts or networks to
Openfiler NAS NFS Datastore can be accessed. Network Access Control List can be
individual IP-addresses specific ESXI host or specify an entire network. For example, IP network
segment range model. I.E ESXI host is in the IP range of the IP network segment range
illustrated below.

4.3. Click on System tab and Go to Network Access Configuration Section:


4.4 Input Values for New Network Access Configuration:
Name I.E 192.168.2.x
Network/Host: IP Range 192.168.2.0
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Type: share(default)

5 Openfiler Create NFS Datastore
5.1 Configure 2nd, 3rd and 4 hard drives as NFS and ISCI data stores.
Each Partitions (/dev/sdb). has the hyperlink for the device to add a partition.
5.2 Go to the Volumes-tab and click on create a new volume group.

5.3. Select Disk# 2( Dev/SDB link- 499.99 GB), or Disk#3(Dev/SDB link- 499.99 GB), or
Disk#4(Dev/SDB link- 200 GB) to create new NFS and ISCSI datastores.
Click the hyperlink(dev/sdb) for the device to add a partition.

5.4 Creating New Partition by clicking Create

6 Create a Volume Group


6.1 Click on Volume Tab---> Input Volume group name(NFS) , click Add Volume Group----
>check dev/sdb1- 476.83GB

7 Add Volume
7.1 Click Add Volume on right side of the screen.

7.2.Keep Volume Default Name NFS Volume group create previous section:

7.3 Input the Volume Name for -Create a volume in "nfs"- and Click Create
I.E
Volume Name: NAS2_Datastore
Volume Description: NAS 2 Datastore
Required Space(MB) 488256(Set to Max)
File system/Volume type: XFS(Default)

7.4 Newly created NFS Volume Group :

8 NFS Volume Share Configuration
NFS-volume configuration share allows ESXi-servers mount to NFS Datastore.
8.1 Click the Shares-tab and click the link for the NFS-volume you have just created.

8.2. Click on the hyperlink Volume name- NAS_2_Datastore (/mnt/nfs/nas2_datastore/) created


in previous section.

8.3. Enter the name for the folder to create in the volume.

9 Configure Share Access Control Mode.


Below steps we will configure newly NFS share to have a primary group for the
share.

9.1 Click on Folder Share to proceed to configure Share Access Control mode.

9.2 Scroll down to the Share Access Control Mode Section-Leave it to Controlled Access.
The default shares are access are set to control access. Not recommended to set to public
access.

9.4 Group Access Configuration: Set it to desktop admin R to PG and RW settings and
Update.

9.5 Host Access Configuration
A. Set NFS to RW(Read and Write) Settings under the Host Access Configuration for Newly
Created Share. (mnt/nfs/nas2_datastore/NAS2_Data01/).
B. Click Update To Complete Configuration.

10 : Additional Drives
* Repeat the same steps for the other additional drives.

11 Mount NFS Datastore To ESXI Host
This section will illustrate adding newly create NFS datastore to ESXI Host.
9.1. Log into Vsphere client to ESXI host ---> Go to the Configuration Tab--->Storage--->Add
Storage

9.1 Select Storage Type-----> Network File System(NFS) and Click Next to proceed. * For
this exercise we will choose NFS, next example will illustrate Create ISCSI Target.

9.2 Input the Network File System Information and Click Next to Proceed.
A. Properties Name: NAS2.- Openfiler Host - Network File System Host Name;
B. Folder: /mnt/nfs/nas2_datastore/NAS2_Data01/ Use the NFS Folder Name Create in
previous sections.

* Make sure not select Mount NFS ready only box-
C: Datastore Name (Symbolic Name) I.E NAS 2 Datastore01

9.3. Network File system Add Storage Final Step- Click Finish To Complete
