COMPONENTS OF SAFETY RELIEF DEVICES SUCEPTIBLE TO DETERIORATION

Different components of the various pressure relieving devices are likely to deteriorate due to
any one or more of the following reasons.

Relief Valves / Pressure Relief Valves

COMPONENT LIKELY NATURE OF DETERIORATION

a) Inlet and outlet nozzles Fouling/plugging due to deposits, foreign

material and corrosion products

b) Flanges of inlet and outlet nozzles Pitting and roughening due to corrosion,
mechanical damage.

c) Disc and nozzle Roughness, uneven surface fouling and

corrosion, chattering mark.

d) Stem Roughening, wear, corrosion.

e) Guide Roughening, wear, corrosion.

f) Spring Bending, corrosion, cracking, loss of

stiffness / tension.

g) Bellow Corrosion and cracking

h) Body and Bonnet Metal loss, corrosion and mechanical

damage

RUPTURE DISCS

COMPONENT LIKELY NATURE OF DETERIORATION

a) Disc Cracks, Fatigue

b) Disc holding flanges Mechanical distortion, wire drawing, damage

in gasket seating face.

BREATHER VALVES

COMPONENT LIKELY NATURE OF DETERIORATION

a) Body Mechanical damage, external corrosion

b) Inlet and discharge opening. Fouling, obstruction in the opening.

c) Oil Contamination of Oil or fall in level.

d) Pallets Fouling, obstruction to movement, loss in

weight, corrosion/surface roughening.

e) Flame arrestor Body Mechanical damage, external corrosion.

corrugated sheets/mesh and erosion.

VENTS

COMPONENT LIKELY NATURE OF DETERIORATION

a) Body Blockage, internal and external corrosion.

b) Flame Arrestor Body Mechanical damage, external corrosion.

c) Flame Outlet Fouling, obstruction in the openings.
