team was on strike where 1 ball 3 runs required. Ricky panicked, because of his classmate
shouting hit de ball na mon .As the young bowler from the grade six class runs up to bowl the
ball Ricky swung as hard as he can hit the tennis ball out of the school ground. Ricky said to
himself I want to be a cricketer when I grew up.

Growing up in a small village called Big Bush in St Lucia Ricky was the youngest in his
family, being the only boy child for his mother Mother Sue, Mother Sue is always behind her
son whenever he wants to achieve anything. She cherished his daily making sacrifices for him to
get his needs. Ricky kept motivated with the actions of his mother, stayed focused and trained
hard every day until he became a teenager, where he stayed at the cricket ground daily jus
practicing by himself. Ricky started secondary school at the Castriess Comprehensive
Secondary school. He felt shy on his first few months. He talked to his mother about being shy
he said to her Im so nervous I Sweat whenever the teachers called on me Mother sue began to
laugh replying Just be you and you could overcome fear. Months has passed, Ricky got over his
hear around the other students. He became friends with Jackson. Jackson was the smartest in his
class and would was be on top in academics. The school cricket tournament was on the go where
the coach Glenn Philips called participants to try out for the game. Jackson said to Ricky You
could do this mon, just belevee in yuh self. As the training begun Ricky knew a lot more than
any other participants that is up for the competition. Ricky showed his skills hitting the bails
6

hitting the cricket ball well the coach started to see potential. Glenn questioned himself How is
he even timing the ball that great? He went up to asking him a lot of questions.

As the tournament near to begin Glenn had chosen 16 out of the 20 participants that signed up.
Ricky was in but he was the bottom end at the list. He felt disappointed because he thought he
was just a failure not making it to the top 10 of the list. Why so down sugar boo? mommy sue
asked, I made it to the team but not as much I wanted to Ricky replied. Mommy sue was at the
table cooking for a pot of Rickys favorite soup. Well darling I want you to go out there and
never you be afraid to go after you dreams He started to think out of the box and began thinking
positively. As the tournament began Ricky went out and was seated for the first two matches. He
was called up when the opening batsman was had scored two ducks. Jackson and mommy sue
came to cheer on Ricky. Ricky started to hit the ball all around timing the ball, middling the ball,
hitting runs nonstop. At the end of the game Ricky scored the highest ever by a St Lucian
batsman. He felt relieved. Glenn and other administrators were there. We need to get him to
come at the West Indies Camp. We need to sign him up for the world cup in Australia said Viv
Richards. Hes a natural. He go share real licks to dem mon on de pitch all as the
administrators mumble to themselves.

At the age of 16 Ricky was named in the West Indies Cricket team. Hooray!! Mommy sue
shouted. As Ricky named as the first St Lucian to play international cricket, everyone was proud
of him and was amazed of his brilliance. Ricky wasnt feeling proud at being selected. Its not
fair to me that the cricket here is dead no one here playing they just brag about it and not play .
Mommy sue replied do it and give back it signaling him that he should those help country
when he return. Ricky went to Australia. Standing as an ambassador to St Lucia Ricky went and
displayed his talent, leading the West Indies to the finals of the tournament. The other captain of
the England cricket team Liam Livingstone started to trigger Ricky with words to make him
loose his focus Why dont you use out, you black thing said the captain. Ricky batted well,
after losing 6 wickets. One over was down at the moment and 3 was needed off the final ball,
Ricky hit the ball as he can leaving the crowd applauding him.

Analysis

The reflective piece A Boys Dream portrays a character named Ricky who accomplished his
dreams of being an international cricketer. He made his dream come true after being selected in
the West Indies team ahead of the World cup. Ricky was the first from his country St Lucia to be
selected in the Senior West Indies Team. By the help of his Mother Mommy sue and his friends
Jackson and Glenn in pursuing his dream, Ricky his the winning runs to lead the team to win the
finals. The author addressed the registers communicative behavior and dialectal variations
Dialectal variations were portrayed in the reflective piece both Standard English and Creole was
used. Standard English was shown in the first scene of the story I want to be a cricketer when I
grew up. This is portraying to the reader that Ricky has hit the winning run for his grade four
class .Because of his passion and love for the game he quoted he wanted to be a cricket. Also
Just be you and you could overcome fear was stated by mommy sue as she implied for Ricky
to be himself to defeat nervous and fear when around his new class mates and teachers. Creole
was use in the first seen of the story where someone in the crowd shouted hit dah ball nuh mon
indicating that Ricky was swinging but was missing at first and they were anxious so they
shouted him to hit the ball

The reflective piece also had shown communicative behavior. It is used where Ricky displays his
nervous around other children. He stated to his mother Im so nervous I Sweat whenever the
teachers called on me showing that he nervous and shy thinking that other children might laugh
at him leaving him to be nervous. Another communicative behavior shown is where Ricky was
disappointed as being the First St Lucian to be selected in the West Indies team Its not fair to
me that the cricket here is dead no one here playing they just brag about it and not play which
shows he felt down while everyone supported his achievement.

Conclusion

In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket is consider as a cultural sport but enough is not
happening to improve it the game. In my opinion I think the Government should address the
issue, taking a hand the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Board. They should build
more tournaments and academe to accommodate cricket and educate youngsters and adults about
the game and its rich history.
