Newton's first law of motion or law of inertia states that "An object at rest stays
at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the
same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." Objects tend to
"keep on doing what they're doing." In fact, it is the natural tendency of objects
to resist changes in their state of motion. This tendency to resist changes in
their state of motion is described as inertia.

Equation: W=mg

Where: w= weight
m= mass
g= gravity (9.8m/sec2)

Newton's second law or the law of acceleration states that the acceleration of
an object is directly proportional to the net force acting upon the object and
inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
Equation: F=ma where: F= net force
m= mass
a= acceleration

a=F
m

Newtons third law of motion or the law of action and reaction states for every
action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Free-body diagrams are diagrams used to show the relative magnitude and direction
of all forces acting upon an object in a given situation.

I. Answer the following: (Show your solutions)

1. A giraffe has a height of 13 feet and possess a mass of as much as 7000 kg.
Determine the weight of giraffe.

2. The average mass of an adult American male is 86 kg. Determine the mass and the
weight of an 86-kg man on the moon where the gravitational field is one-sixth that of
the Earth.

3. Maria, whose mass is 62 kg, experienced a net force of 1900 N at the bottom of a
roller coaster loop during her school's field trip at the local amusement park.
Determine Maria's acceleration at this location.

4. A 65g bag is at rest on a tabletop. How much force is exerting on a table?(draw the
free body diagram)

Centripetal Force is any motion in a curved path represents accelerated

motion, and requires a force directed toward the center of curvature of the
path. This force is called the centripetal force which means "center seeking"
force. The force has the magnitude of:

Fc=m (v2/r)

Rotational speed measures the change in the angle per unit time of rotating
objects.

=2 where: = rotational speed

T =3.1426
T= period in seconds

Frequency is the number of complete rotation or revolution per unit time.

f=1 where:f=frequency
T T- time

Tangential speed can be calculated by:

v=r where: v= tangential speed

r= radius

= rotational speed

Answer the following:

1. What is the centripetal force of a roller coaster whose speed is 35.4 m/sec rounding
of a curve with a diameter of 525 m and the roller coasters mass is 7650 kg?

2. The wheel of a machine rotates at the rate of 20 times 45 sec. If the diameter of the
wheel is 90 cm, Find the following: a)what is the rotational speed of the wheel

Power is the rate at which work is performed or energy is converted.

P= W = Fd cos =Fv W=m(vf2 vI2)

t t 2

where: P=power m= mass

W= work {joules vf= final velocity
t= time (seconds) vI= initial velocity
F= force
v=velocity

Answer the following:

1. A 58kg person is running and accelerates from 6.0 m/s to 8.0 m/s in 30 s. How much
power does that require?

2. A man uses 125 N to push a cabinet to the other side of the house with a constant
velocity of 2.5 m/sec. What is the power output?

3. Jacky has just arrived at the airport and is dragging her suitcase to the luggage check
in the desk. She pulls off a strap with a force of 150 N at an angle of 30 to the
horizontal in 20 sec. Determine the power done by Jacky on the suitcase.
