INFORMATION SHEET 3.1-1
PLANNING UNITS IN ASSEMBLING COMPUTER HARDWARE
Learning Objective:
After reading this Information Sheet you must be able to:
1. Learn about the different considerations in planning units
in assembling computer hardware.
As an aspiring computer technician, it is very important to know the
system that runs your computer and different devices attached to it. Each
device plays an important role, without each other computer system will not
work properly.

PLANNING UNITS IN ASSEMBLING COMPUTER HARDWARE

A computer is like any other project that requires you to put

something together. Just like any other equipment careful planning is
considered before assembling, operating and dispatching any equipment.
Considerations in planning units in assembling computer hardware.

1. Identify Specification Plan.

This is the description of what the computer is capable of doing. This
specification plan summarizes the feature of the computer.

2. Assess the feasibility of the Specification Plan.

To assess you need to ask this questions:
a. Can I assemble the computer in time for the new employees arrival/
b. Does the IT department have the hardware or do I need to contact
companys wholesaler to order the components?

3. Estimate the Duration.

Refers to how long does the assembly is likely to takes place in
assembling the simpler of more complicated type of computers.

4. Estimate the Resources.
The resources you need to complete the assembly are things like
money, tools, space and advice from the IT manager and of course
hardware you are going to use.

5. Assembly Plan
Review of the procedures to ensure the outcomes meet the requirements
by using checklist that details the specification plan.

MATERIALS IN ASSEMBLING COMPUTER HARDWARE
Learning Objective:
After reading this Information Sheet YOU MUST be able to:

1. Identify materials in assembling computer hardware.

The physical, touchable, electronic and mechanical parts of a computer
are called the hardware which is composed of different devices attached to the
computer.

CHECKLIST OF MATERIALS NEEDED TO BUILD A COMPUTER

1. Atx Tower
It includes the following parts: Motherboard, Microprocessor, Memory
Chips, Buses, Ports, Expansion Slots and Cards.

2. CPU
CPU (Central Processing Unit) - The processor is the main brain or
heart of a computer system. It performs all of the instructions and
calculations that are needed and manages the flow of information
through a computer.

3. Atx Motherboard
Mother board/ Main Board/ System Board The main circuit board of a
computer. It contains all the circuits and components to run the
computer.

4. Ram/ Memory
(Random Access Memory) RAM is volatile, meaning it holds data only
when the power is on. When the power is off, RAM's contents are lost.

5. Graphics/ Video Card

Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) - Designed to optically access data stored on a
DVD. A laser moves back and forth near the disk surface and accesses data
at a very fast rate.

7. Sound Card - (also known as an audio card) is an internal computer

expansion card that facilitates the input and
output of audio signals to and from a
computer under control of computer
programs.

8. Speakers
Speakers - Used to play sound. They may be built into the system unit or
connected with cables. Speakers allow you to listen to music and hear
sound effects from your computer
9. Screen/Lcd
LCD Monitors Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology has been used
in laptops for some time. It has recently been made commercially
available as monitors for desktop PCs.

10. Keyboard

Keyboard - The first input device developed

for the PC. Data is transferred to the PC over
a short cable with a circular 6-pin Mini-din
connector that plugs into the back of the
motherboard.

CONFIGURATION OF THE BASIC-INPUT_OUTPUT-SYSTEM.

Learning Objective:
After reading this Information Sheet, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Learn about configuration of the basic- input- output- system.

After you assemble computer hardware it is a must to test it. Thats why
you should also have the knowledge on how to configure it. When doing this
configuration be very careful, read and understand the displayed text before
attempting to change the Setup. When done configuring make sure to Save
Changes and Exit your computer. The BIOS will then restart your computer
so that the new settings you configured will take effect

CONFIGURING BIOS
The following are the CMOs Set up for custom settings you are going to
change or configure.

To enter the CMOs Setup, you must press a certain keyor combination of
keys, during the initial startup sequence. Most systems use Esc, Del,
F1, F2, Ctrl-Esc or Ctrl-Alt-Esc to enter setup. This usually a line f
text at the bottom of the display that tells you Press_______ to Enter Setup.

Once you have entered Setup, you will see a set of text screen with a
number of options. Some of these are standard, while others vary according
to the BIOS manufacturer.

System Time/Date ---- Set the system for time and date.
Boot Sequence ------ The order that BIOS will try to load the operating
systems.
Plug and Play ----- A standard for auto detecting connected devices,
should be set to Yes if your computer and operating system both
support it.
