Year 2000. Having finished his discussion of Jesus Christ, he turned his
attention to the Holy Spirit, to whom this second year of preparation is
Thomas Paul particularly dedicated. The Pope began with the revelation of the Holy
Spirit in the Bible: How, in fact, can we discern the presence of God`s
Spirit in history? We can answer this question only by turning to the Holy
Scriptures, which, being inspired by the Paraclete, gradually reveal his
action and identity to us. Here is a translation of the Holy Father`s
catechesis, which was the first in the series on the Holy Spirit given in
Italian.

can already be seen in the Old Testament and are then amply con-
firmed by the revelation of the New Testament.

saving power of this gift of the Holy Spirit. On Wednesday, 14 October, 1998, the Holy Father held his 877th

been attended by 13,833,000 of the faithful from around the world. At the
Audience on 14 October, the Pope continued his reflection on the Holy Spirit,
focusing on Confirmation as the seal of the Spirit and the sacrament of
Christian witness. Here is a translation of his catechesis, which was the
20th in the series on the Holy spirit and was given in Italian.

1. In the preceding catechesis we reflected on the sacrament

of Confirmation as the fulfilment of baptismal grace. We will now
examine the salvific value and spiritual effect expressed by the sign
of anointing, which indicates the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit
(cf. Paul VI, Apostolic Constitution Divinae consortium naturae, 15
August 1971; LOsservatore Romano English edition, 23 September
1971, p. 4).
Through this anointing, the confirmand fully receives that gift
of the Holy Spirit which he had already received in Baptism in an
initial and fundamental way. As the Catechism of the Cathollic Church

Concerning our separated brethren, the Decree on Ecumenism
says: For men who believe in Christ and have been properly bap-

Baptism, therefore, constitutes the sacramental bond of unity exist-
